Tour Duration: 40 minutes Spring Talks Shankill A talk by Rob Goodbody

Pre- Booking required Marlay House, Wednesday 8th May 7pm

Anyone travelling back in time to Shankill in the late 1830s would not recognise it. Today’s village of Shankill did not exist then, there were no railways and no churches. Society was very different and in Shankill employment was in agriculture and in a number of big houses. This talk looks at Shankill 180 years ago, shortly before the famine, and shows how and where people lived and earned their keep.

Talks are free. Must be pre-booked via email: [email protected] Spring Talks The Foundation of Saint Michael’s Hospital, Dun Laoghaire A talk by Tom Conlon

Pre- Booking required Marlay House, Wednesday 15th May 7pm

The Sisters of Mercy established a 300-pupil girls school in Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) in 1835. Within a few years the school was closed in a major row with the local clergy. The nuns would not return for many years.

The need for a hospital was shown starkly when the town was hit by outbreaks of cholera. Rathdown Fever Hospital and Kingstown Lying-in Hospital were insufficient to meet the need.

The building was designed by John Loftus Robinson and built by the firm of Michael Meade, and the design considerations details are unusual by modern standards but were revolutionary then. It was funded entirely by charitable donations, some of which came from unlikely sources.

Talks are free. Must be pre-booked via email: [email protected] Spring Talks Historic Irish maps, and how Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown is depicted on them A talk by Tom Conlon

Pre- Booking required Marlay House, Wednesday 22nd May 7pm

Ireland is well served for historic maps. This example from a 1610 map of Leinster pre-dates all surveys and is therefore not accurate by modern standards. It was the best available at the time. But it shows, among others, Moneton (Monkstown), Kildernam (Kilternan) Conagh (Old Conna), Fasacrow (Fassaroe), Poures court (Powerscourt), Knoklyn (Knocklyn), Kilgober (Kilgobbin), Shenkin (possibly Crinkin), Donedrone (Possibly Dundrum). Most of the maps to be shown are freely available online.

Talks are free. Must be pre-booked via email: [email protected] Spring Talks Ballycorus A talk by Rob Goodbody

Pre- Booking required Marlay House, Wednesday 29th May 7pm

The Lead Mines chimney is a prominent landmark on its hilltop inland from Shankill. This was the location of lead mines in the nineteenth century and also of a lead works that smelted lead and made lead sheet, lead pipes, shot for shotguns and other products. The area is now popular with hill walkers and the remnants of the industrial history are scattered around the Ballycorus area. This lecture looks at the background history of lead mining at Ballycorus and the lead works, including the magnificent chimney with its enormous flue that runs up the hillside.
