Relection of Today’s Gospel ~ Matthew 1:18-24 This Gospel passage features that mysterious name

“Emmanuel,” which we apply to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

It literally means “with us is God.” In that name is a Sunday: Fourth Sunday of Advent capsule description of our Catholic faith. The single Is 7:10-14; Ps 24; Rom 1:1-7; Mt 1:18-24 difference between our Christian religion and all others is Monday: Saint John of Kanty, Priest Mal 3:1-4, 23-24; Ps 25; Lk 1:57-66 that we believe that God has come to dwell among us as a

The difference between Catholicism and Vigil: Is 62:1-5; Ps 89; Acts 13:16-17, 22-25; Mt 1:1-25 or Protestantism is that while both believe that Christ came in 1:18-25 Night: Is 9:1-6; Ps 96; Ti 2:11-14; Lk 2:1-14 the flesh, we believe that he also left us his flesh, as Wednesday: The Nativity of the Lord Dawn: Is 62:11-12; Ps 97; Ti 3:4-7; Lk 2:15-20 promised in John 6 and Matthew 28:20, so that he could Day: Is 52:7-10; Ps 98; Heb 1:1-6; Jn 1:1-18 or 1:1-5, 9-14 remain with us until the end of time. The whole of

Thursday: Saint Stephen, The First Martyr Catholic life centers on the belief that God has come into Acts 6:8-10, 7:54-59; Ps 31; Mt 10:17-22 our midst and remains among us. All of our Friday: Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist Sacraments make it possible to effect that presence, 1 Jn 1:1-4; Ps 97; Jn 20:1a and 2-8 particularly the Eucharist, which effects what we call His Saturday: The Holy Innocents, Martyrs 1 Jn 1:5–2:2; Ps 124; Mt 2:13-18 Real Presence among us: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Sunday The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph We could say that “Emmanuel” is another word for Sir 3:2-6, 12-14; Ps 128; Col 3:12-21 or 3:12-17; Mt 2:13-15, 19-23 Incarnation. It’s only in carnis, in the flesh, that God could dwell with us in that kind of intimacy—that’s at the very heart of Christian faith and the life of sanctity which Intentions ~ Intenciones de la Misa expresses that faith.

Diocesan Campaign Planning Study

During the past several months, Bishop Stika has consulted with , diocesan leadership, and select community leaders about the challenges and opportunities that face the Diocese of Knoxville. This process has resulted in a list of needs that the Bishop may consider addressing with a diocesan capital campaign. Elements that will be proposed include support for individual parish needs, building our cathedral, and funding for charitable initiatives, priest retirement, and the Catholic Education Trust Fund.

Before moving forward, it is important that we gather your feedback regarding the preliminary plans. As such, a diocese-wide campaign planning study is being conducted through the end of January 2014. Responses will be gathered through a variety of methods, including personal interviews, focus group meetings, and mail or online surveys. You will receive an invitation via mail, e-mail, or in upcoming bulletin announcements in the near future requesting your feedback. We hope that you will get involved and share your voice in this important process.

If you have any questions, please contact John Deinhart, Director of Stewardship and Strategic Planning at (865) 584-3307. We thank you in advance for your time and willingness to share your thoughts with us. Your opinions are valuable in planning for the future of our Diocese.
