LAP UNIVERSITY EXCURSION

Above: Jason Lewis, Seth McCubbin, Damian Batty, Colby Crofts, Jared Robb, Jack Wason. On Tuesday 5th February, eleven Year 12 students from Ungarie Central and Condobolin High left to go on an excursion to visit several universities. Condobolin High students were the first to try out the brand new 12 seater bus. Our first stop was at Charles Sturt University- where students were given a tour by students that attended the university. They had a good look at the wide variety of accommodation possibilities that CSU- Wagga Wagga has to offer and then travelled over the hill to look at the university. CSU- Wagga Wagga may be a small university but it offers a huge amount of courses. After lunch at McDonalds, we journeyed onto Canberra where we experienced a strange phenomenon called rain! After settling into our cabins, we travelled to Belconnen for dinner and a few games of ten pin bowling. Jared ended up being the overall winner in the bowling.

After feasting on a huge buffet breakfast at the caravan park we took the short drive to the University of Canberra. The ‘Widening Participation’ team which included a past student of Condobolin High - Daniel Heinrich, showed the students around the university and also completed several activities on developing knowledge of academic life with the students. Several students were lucky to walk away with a UC hoodie. The day we attended UC was also their market day held for orientation week (O-Week) so our students got to develop an understanding of what the atmosphere is like during O- week. While on the tour of the university we were lucky to see the Brumbies training as their base is at the university Sports Centre. Past teacher of Condobolin High: Gail Heinrich also visited our group and discussed life at UC with the group. On completion we drove to Goulburn for lunch and proceeded on our way to Wollongong. As we travelled into Wollongong we once again experienced the strange phenomena called rain.

At the University of Wollongong we were staying in the on campus accommodation called Kooloobong Village along with a large number of other schools. This accommodation had recently been renovated and the students had rooms that included en suites and kitchenettes. The university provided the students with dinner and also evening entertainment. We met up with Dinish Dodhy, past teacher of both Condobolin and Ungarie. This was the beginning of the Dodhy tour of Wollongong - his hometown. We were lucky to visit the lighthouse before another storm hit.

On Thursday the students participated in the University Discovery day where over 1000 different high school students attend each day for a week. The students were firstly given an introduction to university in a hall seating all 1000 students by a university student undertaking Communication and Media studies. After this the students went to 4 other lectures around the university for the day. The lectures were chosen by the students around subjects they would be interested in studying if they were to attend university. At the completion of the day we once again participated in the Dodhy Tour. Dinesh took us to Stanwell Tops lookout and then across the famous Seacliff Drive. We visited Bulli beach and then visited the shopping centre of Wollongong.

On Friday we travelled home to Ungarie and Condobolin, where we experienced everything from rain, hail and dust storms. The whole four days was a wonderful experience for the students as they got to immerse themselves into all aspects of university life. A huge thank you to Jason Lewis for driving the Ungarie bus and assisting all the time. Congratula tions to the students for being wonderful ambassadors for their school. Calling all aspiring stars!!

Fanny Lumsden is shooting her next film clip for the song Pretty Little Fools in Ungarie, at the pool, NEXT Tuesday. She is hoping to gather a good number of people together for the ‘crowd shots’. If this is something you and your kids might want to be a part of come down to the pool from 4pm and get amongst it.

Things to consider:

*Fanny would like a retro feel to the clip so for outfit inspiration, check out her Totem Tennis clip.

*Any beach umbrellas or picnic blankets or old eskies or old deck chairs would be amazing additions *Try to steer away from any visible brand names on T-shirts (town names are great though)
