FUND = 10 YEARS OF DEDICATED EFFORTS Humanitarian, social and political activism has always been an important segment of the B92 media house operations ever since 1989, when Radio B92 was established. After all these years of struggle and invaluable experiences, it was only logical to set up a Foundation that would be entirely dedicated to socially responsible activities, while striving to preserve the values and methods of work that were established 25 years ago. Thus, back in 2004, Fund B92 was established.

From its inception, Fund B92 has always been among the leading forces fighting to make a better society, by initiating positive social actions, initiating changes and by striving to create positive social climate in and its neighbouring region. Fund B92 implements all its actions in close cooperation with numerous donors, partners and responsive and philanthropic people; these actions are realized by the Fund B92 work force that is led by the principles of integrity, transparency and maximum dedication to ideas and projects. This synergy resulted in recognizable campaigns and successful projects that marked the initial ten years of Fund B92 operations. We have many a challenge ahead of us, and among our goals is to amend the legislation and to make a breakthrough in spreading of ideas of philanthropy and activism.

“Philanthropy is harder than business. You are tackling important problems that people with intellect and money have tackled in the past and had a tough time solving,” said Warren Buffett, business magnate and philanthropist. The first thing in tackling these problems, however, is not the money, nor does one’s work in this area depend on money only, despite the fact that it is undoubtedly important. The first thing in philanthropy is the wish to make the place in which we live a better place for us and for our children. To achieve that, we must change ourselves and society we live in. If we fail to do so, efforts that we make will always be futile.

7 Cooperation between the United Nations in Serbia with Fund B92 has showed that the private and public sectors can join forces to make our society become a better and safer place for all.

Years of UN work in Serbia against violence against women have just got a new aspect in the public sphere owing to Fund B92, an organization that launched the first web-one-stop-shop-info- centre in that is dedicated to this issue.

SAFE HOUSE IN 2006, B92 BROADCASTING COMPANY SET UP ITS CSR TEAM TO LAUNCH ITS CAMPAIGN AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. OWING TO THIS CAMPAIGN, THERE ARE NOW FIVE SAFE HOUSES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS THAT WERE SPECIFICALLY BUILT FOR SUCH PURPOSES.

Statistical data from that period showed that one in three women in Serbia was a victim of domestic violence and physical abuse. According to the statistics from the same period, one in six children was registered as a victim of some type of violence, including sexual abuse. As much as 50% of women in Serbia experienced some aspect of psychological or verbal abuse.

B92 launched its “Safe House” Campaign of TV and radio jingles against domestic violence. The aim of the Campaign was to raise funding for construction of the first safe house for domestic violence victims. B92 Project Partner in this Campaign was the Counselling Service for Domestic Violence Victims. The Campaign slogan was: “Let’s help the domestic violence victims finally feel safe! Let’s build a Safe House!” Owing to its importance, the Safe House Campaign has grown to become a standing Project of Fund B92, which has so far resulted in two safe houses in , and the remaining three in the towns of , and Pancevo.

9 Ten years on, media continuously report on violent acts against women. In recent years, the number of women and children seeking assistance from the Social Welfare institutions, Counselling Services increases on a daily basis. Serbian grim statistics breaks records in femicide numbers internationally. Fund B92 continues its work on this Campaign, which was initially designed not only at a media attempt to raise the public awareness, but also to continuously point out to different aspects and consequences of domestic violence and violent acts against women in Serbia.

Sigurnakuca.net website was launched in 2006 with the support of AVON, as a part of media campaign for building save houses for women and children victims of domestic violence. In addition to information on Campaign results, the original version of the website was a public service facility offering important information to violence victims and to people in their immediate vicinity who were willing to help, but did not know how.

THE FUNDRAISING BEGAN BACK IN 2009; SINCE THEN THE AID REACHED OUT ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS.

Due to the fact that this problem cannot be resolved by one-off donations or short-term actions, Fund B92 initiated a solidarity campaign, by raising funding through SMS donations. The main public event of the Food for All Campaign was a one-day Hunger Strike Against Hunger. By renouncing meals, citizens solidarised with and showed their support for the destitute. The Campaign was supported by numerous individual and corporate donors providing aid and meals in a number of Serbian communities. This Campaign grew to become a prominent, modern times’ symbol of altruism.

Food for All Project is an attempt to solve the problem of undernourishment in Serbia, with the aim to provide a minimum of one meal a day to the underprivileged. According to the World Bank statistics for 2009, more than 600,000 people in Serbia lived below the poverty threshold. UNICEF data showed that there were some 100,000 children among them.

Unfortunately, the overall situation hasn’t changed much. Despite the successful efforts to reduce the national poverty headcount ratio in Serbia, with the financial crisis and a multitude of unresolved economic and social issues, a substantial number of people remains below the poverty threshold. A substantial share of and Metohia population faces extreme poverty and is undernourished every day. With its Serbian and international donors, Fund B92 works to provide aid for the underprivileged several times a year. Recent projects aimed at achieving economic and agricultural empowering of the underprivileged communities resulted in their gradual economic independence. 13 Nordeus works for a number of years now with Fund B92 on the Battle for the Babies. After the opening of a new Ward in the “Narodni Front” Hospital and donation consisting of the required medical equipment to the Gradska Bolnica in Zvezdara, we shall continue this battle to refurbish maternity wards in Serbia. Such donations are the most important ones for our company, because we can be sure that we are helping those who cannot make it on their own, our youngest ones, by investing in our own future.

BATTLE FOR THE BABIES BATTLE FOR THE BABIES IS THE WIDEST REACHING AND THE MOST PROMINENT AMONG THE FUND B92 CAMPAIGNS, AND ALSO THE BIGGEST PHILANTHROPY CAMPAIGN IN SERBIA.

The Campaign was launched in the autumn of 2011, after a disturbing media report on poor conditions of maternity wards in Serbia and lack of incubators and basic prenatal care for the newborns. After consultations with the Ministry of Health officials and representatives of Serbian hospitals, it was agreed that the country needed one hundred incubators to provide standard medical care for the prematurely born babies. The initial Campaign target was achieved in less than two months, and this great victory was publicly announced in Serbian Parliament on November 17, 2011, on the World Prematurity Day.

15 Fundraising for this important Campaign continued, and by the end of Campaign funding was raised for 208 incubators for more than 60 medical care institutions in Serbia. This huge fundraising success over such a short period gave a boost of new energy to the Campaign organizers, and new initiatives were launched to further equip maternity wards for other newborns and their mothers. Recognizing the problems of parents in Serbia when their newborns come home, the team further developed Battle for the Babies into a new campaign called “Vote for the Babies”. It was an initiative aimed at signing a petition to revoke VAT charged on baby products. Petition was signed throughout Serbia by more than 180 thousand citizens. Owing to this petition, Serbian VAT Law was amended and as of 2013, parents in Serbia are entitled to VAT refund on selected baby products, gear and baby food.

16 17 BATTLE FOR MATERNITY WARDS

During my mandate as a CEO of Institute for children and youth health care of Vojvodina, that lasted 11 years, I’ve met many humanitarians and seen many CSR campaigns. But, all of them were overshadowed by Fund B92 campaigns “Battle for the babies” and “Battle for the Maternity Wards”. I’m glad that I had a chance to be a part of this, as far as I am informed, biggest humanitarian campaign for the children’s healthcare in Serbia and in the region. Apart from financial aid, the campaign has shown how support for youngest population can’t be just declarative, but specified and concrete. I want to believe that the campaign rose awareness for those who are not only our “concern, but our pride and the future as well.

19 FILM FESTIVAL FREE ZONE

I am very glad that the young organizers of the Free Zone Film Festival asked me to be the Festival selector. A Zenist once whispered in my ear the following thing: “If you ever get invited to be a film selector of a Film Festival, do not decline the invitation!” This is the first time in my life that I can open a Festival, and here I am, already regretting that there is no such profession, a profession that would include the functions of a female film selector and opener of film festivals, like this one, the Free Zone Festival.

Dubravka Ugrešić Author, an excerpt from the Festival opening “address FREE ZONE FILM FESTIVAL PROVIDES ITS AUDIENCES WITH A FOCUS ON HUMAN RIGHTS RELATED ISSUES IN SERBIA AND INTERNATIONALLY, AND ENCOURAGES THEM TO RECONSIDER THEIR VIEWS ON A BROAD RANGE OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS.

By popularizing engaged cinematography that is not ordinarily included in the cinema repertoire in Serbia, Free Zone Festival is dedicated to human rights’ promotion, making its audiences reconsider, and helping them thoroughly understand, current social issues and social potential for providing solutions to these problems.

Despite the obvious lack of sound cultural policies and lack of proper regard for culture and its place in official policies for democratic social development, culture provides solid foundation for countering intolerance; instead of posing superficial or academic questions, culture reveals the heart of the matter. Free Zone Festival was created to address two major issues: deteriorated tolerance levels and prevailing lack of quality contents in Serbia.

The Festival relies on engaged cinema to move its audience to compassion that suppresses the feeling of alienation and hatred. Since its beginnings in 2005, the selection of international

21 films on a broad range of human rights issues, the Free Zone brings relevant information on different initiatives, feasible solutions and examples of best and worse practices that are intended to inspire and initiate discussions and actions on the local level. Focus of Festival audiences’ attention is often guided to the position of marginalized groups and to the problems these groups face all over the world. The selection of film media, artistic approach and manner in which topics are dealt with, all contribute a great deal to the number of recipients that these important messages need to reach.

Diverse accompanying Festival program is impressive. Each year, Festival selection committee seek to include engaged films and documentaries from this Region in the Festival program. Special attention is paid to a special audience group, the high school students, and special screenings are organized for them as well. Festival features films selected by the Guest Selector – a public figure that stands for the values promoted by this Festival. Each year, after the screenings, Festival audience is invited to meet the film authors and actors, ask questions and initiate discussions with them. Late Night Conversations are introduced inspired by topics that some of the films raise. There are 2 Festival Awards – The Audience Award and The Award to the Audience. After the screenings, audience vote for the film that impressed them most. Based on their votes, the best film in the Festival selection is announced and screening rights for its TV broadcast and screening in 30 Serbian cities, during the Free Zone Film Festival Tour, are acquired.

The 10th anniversary of Free Zone will be held 06 –22 10 November 2014. Additional information on the Free Zone Project is available at: freezonebelgrade.org 23 FREE ZONE JR.

I attended the Camp when I was 16, and that project helped me gain self-awareness in a very important period of my life – at the time when I was growing up. The Project is implemented through the program Free Zone Junior – Film as Supplementary Teaching Tool in Civic Education. A specialized selection of human rights related films are introduced in schools as illustrations to the official Civic Education curriculum.

Free Zone Jr. films that are selected based on a set of specific criteria – 45 minutes’ long classes, students’ age and pre-set curriculum objectives – are intended as teaching aids for Civic Education professors. Accompanying Teacher Manuals are designed to facilitate teachers’ efforts by suggesting various teaching methods and approaches and by bringing materials for class work and film screenings.

25 Since 2006, when the Free Zone Jr. Project was launched, Fund B92 has worked with 524 Civic Education professors from 268 secondary schools in 86 Serbian communities, both through their work in classrooms and through the extra- curriculum programs. After three initial Project cycles, the same methodology was adjusted to create the Free Zone Jr. program for elementary schools. A selection of 23 films and related workshop scenarios is actively used since the school year of 2011/12 by 690 teachers from 428 primary schools in 182 Serbia.

Free Zone Jr. Documentary Film Campus is a segment of the Free Zone Jr. Project as a workshop activity for secondary school students. The aim of this Workshop is to educate the participants about the achievements and causes of social activism, various aspects of engaged cinematographic production, to encourage them to engage in intercultural dialogue, and to encourage and support them to develop their own ideas.

Workshop lecturers have different professional backgrounds, to reflect the comprehensiveness of this approach and to provide relevant information on socially engaged art. Since 2007, 43 high school students from Serbia and other Ex-Yu countries attended the Campus workshops. 5 debut documentaries were developed and produced by the Free Zone Jr. Campus authors, some of which won prestigious international awards.

26 The Camp has made such a strong impression on me, that it helped me decide to take up the engaged documentary film. It gave me a chance to learn about things that I would never have learnt in school, it enabled me to realize my idea into a documentary film, and to learn not only about director’s work, but also about scrip writing, filming and editing.

“Make your day and make their day by donating blood,” was the slogan of the first in a series of CSR actions initiated to improve blood bank supplies in summer months. In May 2008, Serbian Blood Transfusion Institute and B92 Broadcasting Company launched this campaign to remind the citizens of Belgrade and other places in Serbia on a daily basis of the importance of blood donation.

During the first three weeks of its implementation, this joint action contributed to a significant increase in the number of voluntary donors and improved public awareness compared with the same period of the previous year. Coupled with the efforts on maximizing the blood bank supplies, Fund B92 launched an initiative to raise funds for a modern and custom- made mobile blood collection unit, to replace the existing, outdated blood collection bus that remained stationary in a central Belgrade square, no longer suitable for ride. By the end of the action, EUR 205,000 was raised, and a new Ikarbus vehicle was commissioned.

This action grew in scope to include a marrowbone donation campaign. The Bank of Potential Marrowbone Donors was then presented for the first time to the general public in Serbia, along with the concept of organ donation. Together with the Forensic Medicine Institute in Belgrade, work on establishing a DNA Register was initiated. According to the original concept, such a Register would be an important resource in efforts on identification of missing persons.

29 THE OPEN HEART STREET

The Open Heart Street is among the best-known New Year charity and entertainment events in Belgrade and Serbia. Since 1980s, on January 1st, Makednoska and Svetogorska Streets in central Belgrade area are closed for traffic and open to the carnival. This event is primarily of humanitarian character and each carnival was organized to raise funds for a vulnerable group. Initially, in 2010, Fund B92 and Centre for Youth Integration raised funds for homeless children. Next year’s carnival was dedicated to providing support for Doctor Clowns Project and was thus remembered as the Red Noses Street. On the following years, Carnivals were organized to support Battle for the Babies and Battle for Maternity Wards. This year, the Carnival supported the 65+ Campaign and promoted care for the elderly. The event is annually visited by tens of thousands citizens of Belgrade and tourists.

ECO-CAMPAIGNS

An essential segment of CSR activities are dedicated to the most challenging of all modern day struggles – environmental protection. B92 Broadcasting Company worked to support a number of environmental campaigns. Take a Deep Breath If You Dare was the first in a series, organized to raise public awareness of environmental pollution in Serbia.

This campaign was followed by a bigger campaign entitled “I’m protecting Serbia, what about you?” A series of 10 video clips was produced during this campaign; video clips were dedicated to individual environmental issues and promoted advice on individual contribution to reduce pollution and save natural resources in line with “Think globally, act locally” environmental formula. Campaign messages included the following: “Reduce the hot water consumption”, “Unplug technical devices when not30 in use”, “Say NO to plastic bags”, etc. DOCTOR CLOWNS

Fund B92 supported this Project with the aim to make it a permanent activity. Doctor Clowns are a group of young people dedicated to spreading good cheer and positive energy among paediatric wards’ patients and their parents, to help them through these difficult periods of their lives.

Doctor Clowns’ Program is a multifaceted action aimed at achieving lasting change of prevailing atmosphere in paediatric wards. They visit hospitals with the only goal to alleviate children’s fears from their doctors. Doctor Clowns are not merely entertainers; they work is not aimed at creating illusions, but at alleviating traumatic hospital experiences.

MILA FUND

Mila Fund was created in 2009, as an effort to help cure Mila, a female canine with a distressing fate. Mila came from a huge pack of Belgrade stray dogs. At the time, she was a puppy found in a Belgrade suburb with her paws severed. Owing to the immediate response of suburban community members, Mila was promptly taken to the vet; it was then that B92 and a number of public figures started fighting for Mila’s successful recovery. After Mila’s successful recovery and adoption, Fund B92 established the Mila Fund. The Fund works to provide veterinary treatment to animal victims of violence. Together with other organizations and Municipal Services working on animal protection, Fund Mila provides organizational support to other organizations helping them in providing emergency veterinary assistance and animal care similar to those of the Pet Police. 31 From 2012 Fund B92 and Kalmar County Museum have been developing and implementing pilot program for primary and secondary school students. The program was comprised of a Time Travel workshops that took students to 1941 and the situation of Jews, Serbs and Roma people during the German occupation, as well as of several workshops which compared that situation with discrimination and tolerance in today’s society. The discussions in Fund B92-Kalmar County Museum team during development have been inspiring and many creative ideas emerged, resulting in a very successful program that really engaged the learners and encouraged them to “reflect and react. These efforts are aimed at further emphasis, promotion and respect for freedom of expression and human rights, highlighting the values of social responsibility and altruism.

One of the most comprehensive Fund B92 initiatives is aimed at establishing a memorial and educational Staro Sajmište (Old Fairground) Centre. Old Fairground is situated on the Sava River bank in Belgrade, in the immediate vicinity of the City Centre. Old Fairground buildings and facilities were built in 1937, as the first originally built fairground facilities in Serbian capital. In 1941, German occupation forces set up their Semlin Judenlager Camp on that same site, which was among the first concentration camp sites in Europe. From March till May 1942, more than seven thousand detained Jewish women, children and elderly people were killed in a mobile gas chamber. After having completed the ethnic cleansing campaign against the Jews, the Concentration Camp was predominantly used to eliminate the political opponents; 33 In 1942 – 1944, more than ten thousand people were killed there. Today, Old Fairground is a neglected and untended city area. Due to complete lack of interest from the part of the local authorities, most of the Old Fairground buildings are dilapidated. Fund B92 launched an initiative on a fundraising campaign to renew this site of persecution and suffering, and use it as a museum and educational centre. In spring 2014, Serbian and Belgrade authorities set up a Committee to propose the remit of the future institution in this site. Committee members are prominent experts and distinguished public figures who are working to resolve the Old Fairground issue for years now; among the Committee members who are tacking this issue is the Fund B92 President.

Fund B92 premises are situated in one of the oldest City areas, in a building that was constructed in 1930 and formerly used by Jewish charities. The grand hall of this building was throughout history often used as a community meeting place, a venue for humanitarian events organized by the Belgrade Jews and as a synagogue as well. Today, it is a venue for various culture, humanitarian and media activities and Fund B92 projects. Operating in close cooperation with Serbian MoI Cybercrime Unit, Net Patrola works on suppression of production and dissemination of CSAM, hate speech, phishing, cyberbullying and other forms of illegal, illicit and harmful online contents and behaviour.

Safer Internet Day is marked in Serbia since 2012. First National Conference on Child Online Safety and Safer ICT Use in Serbia was organized in November 2013.

Net Patrola Hotline was launched in August 2013. Initially, reports submitted to Net Patrola were predominantly pertaining to political and hate speech. Gradually, with broader dissemination of precise information on Hotline remit and scope of work, the number of political speech reports diminished, to be replaced by submissions on CSAM, hate speech, bullying, adult blackmailing, etc. Hotline activities are directly supported by the RS Ministry of Interior Cybercrime Department. “Click Safely” Safer Internet Centre Serbia Project is co-funded by the European Union (EC Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology CONNECT) and Telenor Foundation.

BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN FUND B92 LAUNCHED ITS BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN IN 2008. BACK THEN, AS A PART OF THE NATIONAL ACTION ENTITLED 77 WOMEN IN 7 DAYS, A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN WAS CONDUCTED TO PURCHASE THE FIRST MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY UNIT IN SERBIA.

Since 2008, Fund B92 promotes the importance of regular screenings for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer and better chances of successful treatment and healing. National Breast Cancer Day is marked in Serbia since 2013. March 20th was symbolically chosen for the Serbian Breast Cancer date, as the first day of spring. This date has been included in the Public Health Calendar of the Republic of Serbia, on the initiative of the AVON Company and Fund B92, with support from the Republic of Serbia Ministry of Health, Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia and the Institute of Public Health of Serbia “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”.

41 International Breast Cancer Awareness Day is marked every year in Serbia. On October 12th, AVON and Fund B92 organize a public march, supported by the RS Ministry of Health and U.S. Embassy in Belgrade. The aim of this march is to raise public awareness and information levels about the importance of breast cancer prevention and to promote the importance of regular check- ups. The event is regularly attended by more than 10,000 people, including hundreds of female victors who were successfully treated from cancer. Participants have special opportunity to write their messages on a specially prepared wall on the main public square in Belgrade, and thus explain why they need their nearest and dearest females in their lives for as long as possible, in line with the march slogan: “One million reasons why I want the world with you by my side.”

Donations and proceeds from the sale of campaign souvenirs is transferred to the National Association of Cancer Survivorship (NALOR), a network of 13 organizations from across Serbia working on prevention, education and support for cancer patients and survivors.

42 43 We work to implement this Project to provide a chance for the female victims of violence, who are the weakest element within the system, for empowerment, through active participation in organic food production. Thus, they will contribute to development of the culture of peace, which is the only environment in which violence is not an option.

The 65+ Movement is an excellent example of the potential of a Fund and of its campaign for social inclusion of quite a large group of the “forgotten”, marginalized or isolated elderly citizens.

65+ Movement is growing every day. Men and women of all ages, public institutions, NGOs, small and large companies and other donors act united led by Fund B92 in their battle to provide care and support for the elderly.

In the first phase of the campaign, the 65+ Movement raises funding to provide daily care for the most vulnerable seniors. Fund B92 works to alleviate this acute social problem in cooperation with its NGO partners, which have decades’ long experience in providing care and assistance to senior citizens and in procurement of sustenance, heating fuel, medical care and daily care. Fund B92 cooperates with state and local institutions with statutory responsibilities and remits in this area. 47 Providing financial assistance is only a part of solution to the problem of elderly citizens. Rising public awareness and building a support system are significant and necessary activities as well. That is why the 65+ Movement places various aspects of problems that senior citizens face in public focus. Stories are told about their personal experiences, vast knowledge, numerous skills, specific needs and inspiring wishes, to show that elderly people are not burden, but a rich resource of Serbian society; they have so much more to say, share and do and their wisdom and courage need to be respected, because their experiences and skills are priceless. Fund B92 works to show how much they’ve already given and how much they can still give. Younger generations need to learn to respect them, otherwise there will be no one to hold them in esteem or to show consideration to them once they grow old.

Join the 65+ Movement campaign and make elderly people’s lives enjoyable! www.pokret65plus.org

48 49 This experience was an important and huge lesson, the first attempt at professional work that was not related to my studies. It was extremely interesting for me to communicate and meet with 11 teenagers from this region, who actively participated in all stages of Project implementation. They were our greatest support and strictest critics.

I have never worked on a project as exciting as the Re:Generation. Not only the concept - a web series where the audience could engage and interact with the ‘characters’ via social media profiles, but most importantly the peer producers, who bought the most unbelievable level of enthusiasm and dedication to the project. From the very start it was clear that Fund B92 wanted to do something quite different, and that’s exactly what has happened. A simply wonderful project.

Claire Wardle, Social Media & Digital Strategist RE:GENARATION IN COOPERATION WITH BBC MEDIA ACTION, IN NOVEMBER 2012, FUND B92 HAS STARTED THE RE:GENERATION INITIATIVE, JOINED BY THE YOUTH INITIATIVE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS , IPSOS STRATEGIC MARKETING, TUNAFISH STUDIO, CIKOTRONCI AND BRACA BURAZERI.

Re:Generation comprises of several interconnected segments. Re:Generation is, first of all, a group of 11 young people from 5 regional countries (Croatia, , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia with Kosovo), learning about video activism, campaigns and debates trough theory and practical work in various workshops and online communication. Through an informal “school of activism”, they acquire knowledge that is further used in promotion of other Re:Generation Projects – web series #JustSaying and online activists’ platform #YouSayIt.

51 One could not imagine Re:Generation without things that trouble them. This unique “voice of #JustSaying, the first regional web-series for the generation” is getting more powerful and teenagers. The storyline follows an (un)usual recognizable, day by day, and it is growing into summer in life several boys and girls who become a website that will become a useful inspiration a close group. The focus, however, is not on the political borders, but rather on the boundaries generated during young age and growing up.

Part of the Re:Generation is #YouSayIt as well – an activist online platform designed for young people from the Balkan region. It is a meeting point where they can talk about themselves and their wishes, problems, hopes and fears; about friends and parents, school, work, dates; about just hanging or sleeping, trips they made and those they wish to make. Through such exchange, young people discover their similarities and differences. In more than 200 short videos, youngsters from the region talk about
