Dudley Brown, F.A.S.I.D., one of the most senior members of the greater Washington Interior Design and Historic Preservation communities, and a wonderfully informed and enter- taining speaker, is returning to present a talk on one of his newest areas of interest and expertise: Packard au- tomobiles. Mr. Brown is a member of the Old Dominion Packard Club. He will discuss the Packards manufac- tured between 1899 and 1929 in relation to the archi- tecture and interior design of the period, particularly those of Chevy Chase. Mr. Brown, who was born in Ohio, came to Washington in 1948, where he worked in the drapery department of the then famous and now defunct Lansburgh’s Department Store on Seventh Street, N.W. He estab- lished his private practice, C. Dudley Brown & Asso- ciates, Inc. in 1964. His extensive work has included the executive offices of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, portions of Woodrow Wilson House, Woodlawn Plantation, Decatur House, and, of course, CHEVY CHASE POLICEMAN WILLIAM C. AUSTIN some of the most beautiful homes in Chevy Chase. By William C.     Founder: Robert Craig Hupp 1876-1931 After working at the Oldsmobile, Ford and Regal factories, Hupp founded the Hupp Motor Car Company in Detroit in 1908 with J. Walter Drake, a former lawyer, in the position of company President. His first car, the Model 20, which he named 'Hupmobile' was a two-seater runabout powered by a 2.8 litre four cylinder engine with high tension magneto and a two-speed sliding gear transmission. It was shown at the Detroit Auto Show in February 1909 and was sold as a competitor to the Model T Ford. Designed by Hupp and E. A. Nelson, it sold well and between March and December 1909 a total of 1618 cars had been delivered. In May 1910, Robert Hupp formed and became President of the Hupp Corporation, which included the Hupp-Yeats Electric Car Company, the Hupp-Turner Machine Co. and the Hupp-Johnson Forge Co. Charles D. Hastings was appointed vice-president and his brother Louis Hupp was made secretary/treasurer. During 1910 and 1911, a further 11,419 cars were built by the Hupp Motor Car Co. and a larger four seater car was introduced in 1911. But Robert Hupp had disagreements with his partners in the Hupp Motor Car Co. because he paid too much attention to the Hupp Corporation and in September 1911, he sold his shares and left the company to found the RCH Company.
