The dust surrounded him, filling every open crevice of his body. The sand burned his eyes and he choked at the hard dry particles that lodged I themselves under his tongue and in his throat. The voice inside of his head that laughed at his ignorant belief that the legendary fountain truly existed was growing louder. He walked faster in an attempt to escape from the haranguing noise. “It’s a mirage you fool! Give up now and turn back before it’s too late!” The old explorer’s eyes fixed themselves forward and his mouth watered despite the roughness that was gagging him.

“It’s the fountain of youth,” he thought to himself. “I have finally found it!” He fell forward at the bank and drank in the rewards of his years of labor. The voice grew louder and more garbled; as if it was choking.

“You see what you have done ... you’re eating nothing but sand!” The explorer looked down at his beloved fountain, his tired eyes burning with sand and salty tears; the salt stinging his cheek as it rolled down towards his mouth and the bitter taste mocked his dream.

The voice grew distant as did his fountain and his tears. Grabbing at the water, he withdrew a hand full of earth. He watched the wind blow them both away as he laid back and let the warmth of the sun finally engulf him.

Throughout all ages man has participated in the ultimate quest for wisdom. It is a vision that leads our senses to the unknown; to experience what others can only dream about. It is this quest that leads us aU to only where the imagination can travel.

Eyes that mirror a barren soul and ears that hear only what we want them to, disregarding all else, are not senses but act simply as gatekeepers to an empty world within. A blind man who can see a stranger’s pain or a deaf child who can hear a parent’s cry of joy experience more than those who wait for an action to be taken instead of taking action.

Many people like to create a sixth sense; some call it perception, others call it intuition. The ability to create Camelot out of confusion is due to our capacity for imagination. Imagination is the true sixth sense that allows us to enjoy what may not be enjoyable and bear what may not always be bearable. Volume XXX, No. 1 Fall 1990

Byron, the lord of dreams, embraced black death yet skimmed high upon the great sky of love... when life grew too full for him when all excess flooded his fiery veins, he chose nothingness, the tasteless water to purge a thing too sweet.

Am I another Byron, who hurls down in despair, to shriek in ecstasy in the next hour? Is my mood that of wind and air, so changeable, intangible, and capricious as pond mist that drifts each night? I could tell you how one day the sky would shimmer blue upon my tingling skin; another day that same heaven becomes my hell, and the sun leers with the crisp, hard sky. Sweetness is bitterness, but regretless and joyful yet I for such sights and hues | no one else has seen but I. I The Physical N ature David s . Wilson

Tonight's the night Our clouded eyes

I began to cry sought no another. But transfixed were they Darkness and clouds only only each other. Invaded blue skies How two hearts could beat as one A river of tears was not the question, but the answer. Ran down from my eyes Love seemed so simple then, I tried hard to smile but then, mystery was the enhancer. We were young and in love, But there was no disguise joined at the heart. You stood in my doorway Then something went wrong, Telling bittersweet lies our world fell apart. Making each passing day We found the meaning of love, A fading its joy had its pain.

And then you walked out We found that question to that answer and we lost to its gain. As we wave Time has taken its toll our goodbyes my days of sorrow, forgotten history. Closing a chapter Because I learned the meaning of love, In both of our lives 1 lost the value of mystery. 16

WHO CARES... KASSANDRA JEAN WASHINGTON

A mother, desperate, Sits against a brick wall, While two small children cuddle Beside her for the warmth of her body. It doesn’t do much good. The ground is so cold And the wind is heartless. But what can she do. Lost her job. No one to turn to. No home without money. No money without a job. No job without a permanent address. Bureaucracy. She did her best. But what does she get? Cold stares, disgusted looks. “Get a job!” they yell. If she could she would. No mother wants her children to starve. Would they be with her, if she did? She’s stronger than the suits on the street with warm homes to go to. She is surviving. If she does not. Who will take care of her children? Will You? 24

After all the time I’ve known you I thought I recognized your true personality; beautiful and caring. But I guess I was just looking at your mirrored image. I caught glimpses of your true self — that camouflaged inner sanctum that you hid from me so well. And now that you’re finally revealed to me, I find that I’m free of caring for you anymore; the bond that once held us together has broken and once again I am happy. At one time you were that main object in my life, but your deceivement has shattered that image forever. Tell me... was it really worth it? I’ll leave you wondering what could have become of us instead of staying with you and making those thoughts visible. Take care — and remember, for the next person that comes along that seems touched by your personality, be sure and tell them that it’s just your mirrored image they’re looking at. For all mirrors reflect opposites — your reflection was beautiful. 26 27

Emotions drive, but my mind rebels. * ’ I feel the prim al forces and have passionate dreams, but I’m so twisted I can only scream. The anim al desires aind the body on fire.

I am torn with desire. 1 am fighting myself.

Her image passes, a faint scent in the air. There’s a chemical reaction and a mysterious pull. No logic can rem ain Can’t stand the strain

I am torn...

a Moment’s passion yield an equal reaction, the fear Returns and my head explodes. I can’t feel a thing, neither pleasure or pain, I won’t yield to the desire, won’t feel the fire.

I see her passing with golden hair. Chemical action, I give with the pull. My logic remains, £ind so does desire. I too continue, as the fire burns higher. 28

The Music by Lisa Gerson

Yes, I've felt this before, she said, I knew in advance, And it's all an illusion, Haunting music to which I dance

And the stream hits th e rock. Where I dance in the moss. Drenched, I slip Into the water,

The current drags me along, Toward the sea. It's not eno u g h to b e strong I've got to swim to be free.

I've hit solid ground On the ocean floor Found another illusion for I knew in advance, I had felt it before.

The music returns in the sound of a bell. Chiming under the waves. I must bid thee farewell. And answer the phone...

...because it's a b o u t to ring— The music's calling. 32

I am not a theif, nor som eone bad. I relieve the soul of its m isery; is not glad?

I don not dam n to hell or send to heaven not ME. I m erely release the soul from its cabinet and set it free.

The artist creating images of pain; She tries to express herself. She's desperate to be seen.

The writer telling tales of love; Wishing he could live his works. Wishing to be read by another.

A composer turning himself into music; His aloneness echoes in the concert hall. He's hoping to be hear.

lonely & afraid, lost in this world, needing to hold each other, to remain apart is just a waste, a life unshared has no taste.

Each word I write is an urgent plea; I'm yearning to know another soul. Waiting to be understood.

then, the door is opened, the music is finally heard, the pain is soothed, despite our dreams of greatness. Despite our pride. To be read and held by another. Is all that matters in our lives.

It's such a joy to be heard at last. So good to touch another. My words of wanting reflect in her eyes. My aloneness echoes no more. 37

World collide, nations die but nobody sees ’cause it’s all in my mind. Children’s cries, cities that shake stay with me even when I’m awake. They’ve locked me up, they think I’m crazy but can’t they see that thee room’s all hazy? Of bombs exploding, of people dying, In the dead of night I wake up crying. It must be hard for you to imagine what it’s like to die in the fashion that I did.

Who am I to talk since the carnage I spoke of was really my fault? Fighting in fields and villages we have seen the truth, that in a war no one ever lives “happily ever after.” Even the children are incapable of laughter.

But I did my part, I bombed the village, I followed my friends and went down to pillage. I was the best in my troop and did my job well as th e newly orphaned babies could tell. On our arrival, nothing moved within the town except for the injured crawling along the ground.

We searched for survivors and as the daylight grew dim I foxmd a man whose eyes burned like the fires arotmd him. He looked at me and as the fires died the eyes stayed open. On the flight home I kept hoping and hoping that I could go back to being the man I was before. But as the bolt slides shut on the padded door, I wonder why they still call me a hero of the war. 38 39 AM exe-RAJOTy CHAV W A M L S

My life w as a whirlwind; round and round it went. A storm with no control,

no will where it went.

It had no purpose; touching down on a whim. Life had faded, Love was so dim.

Then cam an angel with eyes that brighten the night.

A tough so smooth, that calms all fright.

A kiss and a whisper were all that were needed to calm the storm; Halt as she heeded.

The whirlwind stopped. It played a new role. Through Our Love, I had become whole. 47

Eternal Chain Judith Eisenberg

Mon wonts to be remembered throughout the ages. He seeks immortality in his monuments but in time they too will fall. Only memories can survive eternity. I know that as long as someone remembers me I can never truly die. I will be leaving this place soon. As I look back one last time, I wonder what kind of memories I will be leaving behind and if I have entrusted them to worthy keepers? Each person I meet and everything I touch canies a small part of me in their minds and in their making. Each piece a small link in a chain spanning eternity. Who says I can't live forever?
