Rogation Sunday” Sunday 6th May 2018 Sixth Sunday of Easter - “Rogation Sunday” Time sermons So far this year we have had a sermon each month on the theme of Time. Peter launched the theme in January; I offered some reflections on ‘Liturgical Time’ in February; Ruth Tuschling preached in March about ‘the Soul in Time’ and how we grow spiritually. The Dean’s Holy Week addresses concluded on Easter Day at Evensong, linking poetry and the WWI centenary with thoughts about time, hope and eternity. Today is Rogation Sunday and we take up the theme again. Canon Anthony is preaching about ‘time and history’ - before we go after the 10.30 service to ‘Beat the Bounds’. This is a historic and fun opportunity to walk the boundary of the Cathedral parish, and ask God’s blessing for the year ahead. The series of Time sermons will continue through the rest of the year, as below. A recording of all these key sermons will be available on the website. TODAY Stations of the Resurrection in the South Ambulatory. Also known as the Stations of Joy or the Way of Light (Via Lucis) is a meditation for Eastertide that complements the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis). Tough Mudder 2018 David Price, Canon Peter, two of the Choral Scholars and some former members of the Cathedral Choir will be running the Tough Mudder next Saturday to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. It involved more ships than any previous naval battle. It also came at an awkward time in the development of power-driven warships. Their speed was much greater, but communication by radio was still in its infancy and radar had not been invented, while funnel smoke made communications by flags or light much more difficult. The potential for things to go wrong – always very great in sea battles – was greater than ever. There was, understandably, public disappointment with the result, but there is no doubt that it was fought with the highest courage and determination under the most difficult and challenging conditions. Whatever the judgement on the outcome, this commemoration of the centenary of the Battle is focused on the endurance and gallantry of all those who took part, on both sides, and particularly, on those who lost their lives.

    Sunday 3rd June 2018 First Sunday after Trinity You may have noticed a new art installation in the Welcome Area! It is a site specific installation as part of our annual theme of ‘Time’, funded by the Arts Council and created by Chris Jenkins who was also responsible for the Willow Dome on the Cathedral Green. The piece is formed of hundreds of smaller pieces, each of which have come from different places, where they had a different identity and purpose. The changing light from within the structure also reminds us of the passage of time through the days and seasons. It contains a digital countdown clock to remind us of the passage of time, deadlines and the pressure and focus this can provide for us. Exploring the theme, Chris has been looking at the earliest timekeeping methods as well as megalithic formations built to mark lunar and solar movements. It would be true to say that this sculpture has not been universally greeted with enthusiasm. However, for much of the past week people have been talking about it and what it represents. This has led to ongoing conversations about art and time. Art should provoke a response, both intellectually and emotionally. This installation has achieved that already. Chris will be with us for a reception sometime in the next couple of months to talk about his work and this piece in particular.
