Come nel 2012 saranno i Boston Celtics ad affrontare l’EA7 Emporio Armani sul suo campo. Nel 2010 erano sbarcati a 3 COPPA COPPE Milano i New York Knicks. Si tratta del quarto confronto ufficiale con una squadra NBA. Il primo risale addirittura al 1987 quando l’Olimpia giocò la prima edizione dell’Open a Milwaukee affrontando i Bucks come squadra detentrice del titolo europeo. Tuttavia, nel 1984 arrivarono in Italia i Phoenix Suns e i New Jersey Nets: ambedue le squadre affrontarono formazioni le grandi italiane dell’epoca 4 COPPE ITALIA ovvero Varese, Virtus Bologna e appunto l’Olimpia. Quel torneo itinerante però era un’iniziativa privata e in quanto tale non ancora riconosciuto dalle istituzioni ufficiali. In ogni caso l’Olimpia è 0-5 contro squadre NBA. Nessuna squadra italiana invece ha mai battuto una squadra NBA. E’ stata la squadra italiana più vicina all’impresa. L’OLIMPIA E LA NBA 3 COPPE CAMPIONI Una volta l’ex coach dell’Olimpia, Dan Peterson, definì la sua squadra la “ventiquattresima” franchigia NBA. A quei tempi la NBA aveva 23 squadre (ora sono 30) e la definizione illustrava la credibilità del club e il suo valore. L’Olimpia vinse il titolo europeo per club nel 1987 e di nuovo nel 1988. Il rapporto di Milano con la NBA è sempre stato forte e molte delle grandi squadre dell’Olimpia sono state costruite attorno a giocatori NBA di provata qualità. Nel 1966 quando 1 INTERCONTINENTALE l’Olimpia vinse il primo titolo europeo battendo a Bologna in finale lo Slavia Praga, in squadra aveva il futuro Hall of Famer, Bill Bradley, ex star dell’università di Princeton, prima scelta dei New York Knicks con i quali avrebbe vinto due titoli NBA nel 1970 e nel 1973. Bradley in quell’anno studiava a Oxford in Inghilterra e si trasferiva a Milano per giocare le partite una volta alla settimana. In seguito 2 KORAC sono passati per Milano John Gianelli (vinse il titolo NBA con i Knicks), Joe Barry Carroll, nella sua unica stagione trascorsa fuori dalla NBA per una disputa contrattuale, Antoine Carr, prima scelta dei Detroit Pistons nella stessa stagione in cui venne a Milano, e soprattutto Bob McAdoo, top scorer dell’Olimpia nei due titoli europei vinti nel 1987 e 1988. Grande simbolo della squadra di Milano negli 3 COPPA COPPE anni ’80 e poi allenatore sempre a Milano è stato Mike D’Antoni, altro ex giocatore NBA che poi ha allenato a Denver, Phoenix e New York. D’Antoni è uno dei due giocatori (l’altro è Arthur Kenney) il cui numero di maglia è stato ritirato dal club. Danilo Gallinari, nel 2008, è stato scelto al numero 6 dei draft NBA da New York provenendo proprio dall’Olimpia nella quale ha giocato brevemente 4 COPPE ITALIA anche nella stagione 2011/12 (adesso è a Denver).
