The Other, Other, Other All-Batman Game by Mike Young Intercon H in Chelmsford, Mass
The Other, Other, Other All-Batman Game By Mike Young Intercon H in Chelmsford, Mass. It was 6:00 on a Friday. I had just finished bragging that I wasn't running anything this weekend. Phillip Kelley dares me to write a game for the con. At 6:30 we all sit down to play The Other, Other, OtherAll Batman Game. Curse you, Phil Kelley! You can read an excellent history of The All Batman Game, The Other All Batman Game, and The Other, Other All-Batman Game at Phil’s site. I believe that mine is unique in being the only one in which all the characters are actually Batman, well more or less. Thanks to the players of the inaugural run: Daniel Abraham, Vivian Abraham, Dave Cave, Quinn D, Greer Hauptman, Phillip Kelley, Sue Lee, David Lichtenstein, and Drew Novick. Game Situation A group of omnipotent, plot driven entities known as the Omniseers have kidnapped a number of Batmen from across time and space and forced them to choose one to be the true Batman. The Batmen may choose any one of them to be the true one, but they won't. They will dither and argue and fight. After ten or so minutes, or when the joke has run out, just pick one randomly. Game Set Up Print out the character sheets below and distribute them to the players. The combat system can be any of the following, or just make up your own. The winner can do whatever they want to the loser. Potential Combat Systems: MENKS: Players get cards equal to their Power Level. -

STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

Edexcel a Level Aos3: Music for Film, Part 3
KSKS55 Edexcel A level AoS3: Music for film, part 3 James Manwaring by James Manwaring is Director of Music for Windsor Learning Partnership, and has been teaching music for 13 years. He is a member INTRODUCTION of the MMA and ISM, and he writes This is the last of three resources on film music (following part one inMusic Teacher, November 2017, and part a music education two in January 2018) based around Edexcel’s Area of Study 3. Here we’ll focus on Batman Returns, and also blog. some further ways into film music composition for A level students. STARTING POINT: COMPOSITION Film music is a popular genre among students. They enjoy both the set works and the wider listening. Composing in a cinematic genre also remains a popular avenue for many students, who enjoy crafting and creating music that tells a clear story. In this resource, I want to start by looking at some specific ways into film composition, so that students can create music that fits in with the set works. If students are going to truly understand a genre of music, they need to engage fully with it. Composing cinematic music is a great way for students to understand cinematic music – and that goes for all genres of music, in fact. Performance is also important, however: students should have the chance to play music from different genres – and there are some great arrangements out there for all abilities. If you can play something cinematic in your orchestra, wind band or brass band, it will really bring the music to life. -

Danny Elfman: Batman Returns Birth of a Penguin Part 1, Birth of a Penguin Part 2, Batman Vs the Circus, the Rise and Fall from Grace (For Component 3: Appraising)
Danny Elfman: Batman Returns Birth of a Penguin Part 1, Birth of a Penguin Part 2, Batman vs the Circus, The Rise and Fall from Grace (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances The composer Danny Elfman (b. 1953) is a self-taught composer and is unusual because of his parallel career as a rock musician with the band Oingo Boingo. He grew up in Los Angeles and is the youngest son of two teachers. While at school, Elfman wanted to be a filmmaker. ‘I always thought that some way or other I’d end up in film, but somehow I ended up in music.’ Tim Burton and Elfman had a close working relationship and collaborated on a number of films including Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Planet of the Apes (2001). Of all the films they have made together, Batman remained Elfman’s biggest grossing film until Spider-man (2002). More importantly, Batman brought Elfman to public attention and established him as a creditable film composer. Elfman often scores much of his music around leitmotifs then develops them through the use of variations. The use of thematic development illustrates Elfman’s influences from composers such as Bernard Herrman (Psycho, 1960) from the Golden Age of films. Having established the main materials of the score, Elfman works through the film chronologically, using the materials he has developed in a manner which is extremely unmethodical. Batman Returns (1992) is the sequel to Batman (1989), directed by Tim Burton with Michael Keaton reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. -
