It’s used once then then the data is stored in an ad hoc fashion making it hard to reuse and harder to share around the newsroom or with readers. If the journalist leaves, the data is often lost. Surver 2.0 is the Financial Review’s solution to this problem. Surver 2.0 is a data journalism news platform that allows journalists to easily and quickly create, manage and publish datasets and surveys about any topic. The grunt work of data validation, storage and publication is managed by the system. The data is used to power the reporter’s stories and then published for readers to explore via a range of interactive apps and graphics. The datatable application that sits on top of the database allows readers to explore any given set of data by filtering, sorting and then clicking into the detail of an entity (be it a person or company). 100 WOMEN OF INFLUENCE BRW RICH 200 LAW PARTNERSHIP SURVEY INNOVATION | SURVER 2.0 ENHANCED Making data reusable CUSTOM LOOK AND LOGIC CUSTOM ENTITY PAGES The system allows a reporter to easily specify a custom Another example is custom logic that works look and calculation for each survey. out if a Rich Lister has been on the list before or is making a debut and mark it as For example, the BRW Rich 200 is formatted to such on the entity pop-up page. highlight the rank and wealth figure. In contrast, the Law Partnership Survey emphasises the key data for that industry around staffing numbers. CUSTOM FORMATTING FOR EACH DATABASE Surver 2.0 also allows custom logic to be built into a survey. This can range from allowing data to be stored in a raw format for calculations but presented in a neat reader-friendly manner. For example, an individual’s wealth is stored as 14,200,000,000 and then presented to readers as $14.2b. The platform was created in-house by senior journalist John Davidson (a former professional programmer) with data journalist Edmund Tadros and designed by senior interactive designer Les Hewitt. INNOVATION | SURVER 2.0 ENHANCED Automating the data journalism process DATA COLLECTION TECHNOLOGY Surver 2.0 was created using a modern programming stack: a ReSTful public API that can be accessed by any number of apps; an Angular app for drag-and-drop creation of surveys and associated data; and a variety of JavaScript apps that present the data interactively to readers. The interactive apps access the database directly meaning that publication of new data is instantaneous and effortless.

    1. Gina Rinehart $14.02billion from Resources Chairman – Hancock Prospecting Residence: Perth Wealth last year: $20.01b Rank last year: 1 A plunging iron ore price has made a big dent in Gina Rinehart’s wealth. But so vast are her mining assets that Rinehart, chairman of Hancock Prospecting, maintains her position as Australia’s richest person in 2015. Work is continuing on her $10billion Roy Hill project in Western Australia, although it has been hit by doubts over its short-term viability given falling commodity prices and safety issues. Rinehart is pressing ahead and expects the first shipment late in 2015. Most of her wealth comes from huge royalty cheques from Rio Tinto, which mines vast swaths of tenements pegged by Rinehart’s late father, Lang Hancock, in the 1950s and 1960s. Rinehart's wealth has been subject to a long running family dispute with a court ruling in May that eldest daughter Bianca should become head of the $5b family trust. 2. Anthony Pratt & Family $10.76billion from manufacturing and investment Executive Chairman – Visy Residence: Melbourne Wealth last year: $7.6billion Rank last year: 2 Anthony Pratt’s bet on a recovering United States economy is paying off. The value of his US-based Pratt Industries has surged this year thanks to an improving manufacturing sector and a lower Australian dollar. Pratt is also executive chairman of box maker and recycling business Visy, based in Melbourne. Visy is Australia’s largest private company by revenue and the biggest Australian-owned employer in the US. Pratt inherited the Visy leadership from his late father Richard in 2009, though the firm’s ownership is shared with sisters Heloise Waislitz and Fiona Geminder.

01/10/2018 Just Group sues to halt CFO Nicole Peck defection to Cotton On THE AUSTRALIAN Just Group sues to halt CFO Nicole Peck defection to Cotton On By BEN BUTLER, BUSINESS REPORTER 12:00AM JULY 7, 2016 • H COMMENTS Solomon Lew’s Just Group has launched legal action in a bid to stymie the defection of chief financial officer Nicole Peck to retail rival Cotton On. In a lawsuit filed with the Victorian Supreme Court, Just accuses Ms Peck of breach of contract, including a confidentiality clause, and seeks to prevent her taking up the Cotton On job for two years. Ms Peck lasted less than five months as head of Just, a subsidiary of Mr Lew’s listed Premier Investments that controls retail brands such as womenswear chain Dotti, pyjama group Peter Alexander and stationer Smiggle. She quit in May. Just also sought an order forbidding her being represented by law firm Ashurst, which has in the past acted for Cotton On, because of a “a real and sensible risk of inadvertent disclosure of commercially sensitive and confidential information by Ashurst to Cotton On”. The company also raised the possibility Cotton On might be paying Ms Peck’s legal costs. However, in a judgment on Friday, judge Andrew Keogh found Ashurst does not currently act for Cotton On. In a rebuke to Just, Justice Keogh said a subpoena issued by the company seeking information about the case from Ashurst “clearly represents a fishing expedition, and has no legitimate identifiable forensic purpose”. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/just-group-sues-to-halt-cfo-nicole-peck-defection-to-cotton-on/news-story/cd99edf8a38d5e9c774a115950a… 1/2 01/10/2018 Just Group sues to halt CFO Nicole Peck defection to Cotton On “There is no evidence to establish the probability that Ashurst will in future act for Cotton On, or that any confidential information obtained by Ashurst in the conduct of the current proceeding will be directly relevant to a future retainer with Cotton On,” he said.

Box 523, Terrigal 2260 Submission by email to: [email protected] 13 February 2008 The Legislative Council Select Committee on Electoral and Political Party Funding TARA welcomes the Legislative Council of NSW’s initiative on 27.06.07 in appointing a select committee to inquire into and report on the funding of, and disclosure of donations to, political parties, and candidates in state and local government elections. It is disappointing, however, that apart from the media release on 15.11.07 and a call for submissions on 19.11.07 little publicity has been given to this matter. The period 19.11.07 - 15.02.07 (closure of submissions) conveniently some might add, coincided with Federal Elections, Christmas and the January holidays. All media attention is currently on the return to Parliament of the new Federal Government and The Sorry Bill. One must ask the Question: Who could fund the advertising to raise awareness of the people of the Inquiry by this Select Committee into Electoral & Political Party Funding? The Liberal Party? The Labour Party? The Unions? The Development Industry? The Association of Hotels, The Gaming/Racing Industry? The Food Industry? The big Corporations? The answer of course is “NO” because all of the above are either major donors or major beneficiaries of electoral and political donations, and it would not be in their interest.

The University of Melbourne Council endorsed the Annual Report at its meeting on Wednesday 15 March 2017. 2016 was a successful year for the University. Student demand remained strong at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Academic and professional staff continued to perform at a high level. The University’s research activity has maintained its impressive national and international profile. This is reflected in international university rankings, success in attracting Australian and international research funding, and many awards and honours recognising the contributions of our academic staff. The University's 2015 Collision brand campaign won two awards at the 2016 Australian Marketing Institute Awards for Marketing Excellence: the Marketing Program of the Year and the Education category. In order to continue to be a strong competitor nationally and globally, the University must anticipate and respond to the growing challenges to its funding, research, teaching and reputation.
