In the summer, the serene town transforms into the mecca of thoroughbred racing, drawing over half a million fans to view its exciting races annually. The Pepsi Arena, located in downtown Albany, hosts some of the country’s top entertainment acts, and doubles as the home of the area’s premiere sporting events as well. The Albany River Rats of the International Hockey League, the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League and the Siena men’s basketball team all play home games in the arena.

The Adirondack Mountains, located just north of the Capital Region, provide some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

In 2003, the man- down unit ranked second in the nation, allowing just seven goals in 47 opportunities. In his final three seasons, the Blue Jays were a dominant 39-5. The tenacity and experience Conry brings defensively to the Saints’ coaching staff is immeasurable. Equipped with intensity and a refreshing level of excitement, he fuels his players on the practice field right into gamedays. Kevin has been influenced heavily by the successful coaches he had in college including David Pietramala and Bill Dwan. Blending that style, along with coach Brecht’s, points to limitless possibilities for the future of this program. Conry is eager to pass on his experience to this year’s Saints roster, which includes a tremendously talented freshmen class. The skill and youthful energy they bring is much needed and it falls on the coaching staff to develop them so that they can blend in with the returning letterwinners and form a cohesive unit this season.

Siena College Lacrosse 2006 29 2005 Season In Review

The Saints finished seventh in the MAAC last season with a 4-11 record and a 2-6 mark in league play. Six of the losses were decided by two goals or less, including three one-goal losses. Siena flourished in Loudonville last season, sporting a 4-3 record. In those victories, the Green and Gold outscored their opponents 33-19. Siena started out the season with a month-long road schedule that included trips to New Hampshire, Greg Powell Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, Connecticut and New York before opening up the home slate at Union College. During that stretch of eight games, the Saints dropped seven contests with the final four losses being decided by two goals or less. The Saints captured their lone victory in the home opener against Holy Cross, 8-5, in the final game of March at Frank Bailey Field. The defense showed improvement from game to game, decreasing goals allowed by opponents in each of the first six games. The offense found it tough to find firm footing as they posted 6.2 goals per game (gpg) over the 1-5 stretch, while the defense allowed 10.8 gpg. After a 9-8 overtime loss to Hartford, the Green and Gold traveled back to Loudonville to resume play at Siena Field. The Saints provided their fans with the second victory of the season and first MAAC win in a 9-8 victory over Wagner. Four starters fired home a pair of goals led by Matt Walsh’s four points (2 goals, 2 assists). Following the victory, the Saints went on a three-game losing streak. Siena stopped the slide with a resounding 11-3 victory over Robert Morris. The eight-goal victory was the biggest win of the season, as Walsh and Greg Powell each posted hat tricks. The Saints finished the season winning two of the last three contests, including the Senior Day game against St. Joseph’s in the season’s final game. The Saints’ defense allowed three goals in a 6-3 defensive struggle. John Bamford registered the win between the pipes making 14 crucial saves in the victory. Walsh led the team in goals (25), points (40), and was second on the team in assists with 15. Powell, the team’s leading assist man, was the only other Saint to tally in double figures in both goals (11) and assists (16). Greg Pelatti and Ted Moran were the only other players to finish with double-figure goal totals. In 15 starts, Pelatti finished second on the team in scoring with 17 goals and came up with 30 ground balls, while Ted Moran had 14 goals. Phillip Ferrara paced the Saints’ man-up offense with a team-high eight goals. Peter Green and Matt Schuster accounted for 107 ground balls (56, 51 respectively). Schuster and Kevin Hogan combined to win 108-of-228 face-offs taken (47.4%) for the Green and Gold. John Bamford led Siena with a 63.3% save percentage and David Jalette stopped 99 shots on goal.

One of the main objectives of the Siena Athletic Department has always been to remain actively involved in the Capital Region community. Siena’s student-athletes and coaches make numerous appearances in local class- rooms and hospitals and volunteer hundreds of hours to help out many organizations. Additionally, the athletic department has donated thousands of dollars in game tickets, sports camps scholarships and sporting apparel and memorabilia to local charities. From soup kitchens to elementary schools, Siena’s invests its special resources each year to enrich the Capital Region community.

Adopt-A-School Program The newly redesigned Adopt-A-School program is a com- munity initiative intended to motivate area elementary students through interaction with Siena’s student-athletes. Members of Siena’s athletic teams interact with designated schools throughout the year. In addition to providing guidance and leadership to area youths, Siena’s student athletes learn first hand the value of volunteering in the community. The elementary students can find that learning is fun as teachers incorporate Siena Athletics into class lesson plans (i.e. using statistics for math assignments, or writing the players for English). For the past five years, Siena’s student-athletes have volunteered their lunch period to work with children who attend St. Casmir Elementary School. The Arbor Hill school does not have a gym. Siena’s student-athletes correspond throughout the year and ultimately visit the school. Each school is presented with an Adopt-A-School poster, identifying it as a current participant in the program. Additionally, Siena publications and prizes are provided for the school to give out to students who are Siena student- deemed outstanding performers.
