For Wallen berg, it was just beginning," writes Bicrman. Early TWO RIGHTEOUS GENTILES in 1945 the Russians occupied Budapest, and Wallenberg was taken away by their political police. Why? Nobody knows. All wc do know is that in Wallenberg and Schindler Stories Told Febmary 1945 he was in a cell at the Lubianka prison in Moscow. From then on, no reliable traces ofhis whereabouts have been discovered. Over the years, all official and unofficial enquiries about him have come up against the stone wall of Russian secretiveness. It is not substantially the same as any that I have submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for a degree or diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University of similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. The length of this dissertation is 78,171 words (excluding prefatory pages, footnotes and bibliography). It therefore does not exceed the word limit imposed by the Faculty of History Degree Committee. To Elena and Cristi Siclovan Lorenz Stein and German Socialism 1835-1872 Diana Siclovan This thesis traces the intellectual trajectory of Lorenz Stein (1815-1890), a German legal scholar and political thinker who, despite being a significant theorist during his lifetime, is an obscure figure today, especially in Anglophone scholarship. It focuses on Stein’s writings on socialism and argues that they provide crucial insights into the changing nature of socialist thought in the mid-nineteenth century. -

CONCLUSION 84 APPENDIX A 87 APPENDIX B 88 BIBLIOGRAPHY 99 111 INTRODUCTION A study of German diplomatic relations with Lithu ania during Adolf Hitler's rule is valuable as a case study of Hitler's general foreign policy and his aims in the East. Hitler's actions in dealing with Lithuania were similar to his actions in other countries with German minorities such as Poland and Czechoslovakia. German-Lithuanian relations from 1933 through 19 39 cannot be analyzed without knowledge of the significant relations between the two countries during the Weimar Re public. An examination of the major diplomacy between Germany and Lithuania in the period after World War I and before the advent of Hitler can help to clarify the problem of transition in foreign policy from the Weimar Republic to the Third Reich.
