Xaverian Brothers High School Campus Ministry Program Book Xaverian Brothers High School Campus Ministry Program Book CREATED SUMMER 2020 Introduction Xaverian is more than college prep; it’s life prep. And a large part of that comes from our campus ministry program. When you think "campus ministry," is bible study the only thing that comes to mind? Think again. It’s service. It’s conversation. A listening ear. A place to unwind. It’s pizza parties. Even tug of war. The programs and activities offered by campus ministry help our students develop relationships with family, friends, and God. Local and international service provides an enhanced worldview, giving students a better understanding of their role as global citizens. We are committed to the moral and spiritual development of young men. Here, faith is talked about, but even more, it is lived – in our worship, in how we treat one another, and in our service to those in need. In a community of faith and respect, our students are challenged to live meaningful lives – in service to God, and to others. We welcome students and families from all faiths and backgrounds, appreciating the richness of diversity. Our inclusive community embraces experiences and perspectives from all walks of life. Relationships With God: through lively, relevant, and meaningful liturgy; through retreat programs; God through encouraging the community to be a people of prayer. With Self: By meeting individually for pastoral counseling when appropriate; By strengthening self-confidence and Christian identity through proper training to be servant leaders and peer ministers. The morning will begin with ice breakers and students will head to the Josephine M. Noble Chapel for an introduction to the Spiritual Values of Xaverian Schools. Small group discussion and a complimentary pizza lunch will follow. In-School X-ACT X-ACT (Xaverian Community in Action) is our school's weekly service program. Grade 7 students walk across the street to Benchmark Senior Living to provide a ministry of presence to its residents. Students will begin and end the day with prayer and discussion in the campus ministry center.     Xaverians World-wide Ryken's vision Theodore James Ryken was born in 1797 in the small village of Elshout, North Brabant, the Netherlands, to ardently Catholic middle class parents. Orphaned at a young age, Ryken was raised by his uncle. Ryken was trained as a shoemaker. He felt a calling by God which drew him to work first as a catechist, followed by helping manage an orphanage, and later by caring for cholera patients in the Netherlands. At age 34, Ryken went to North America, where he served as a catechist among the missionaries to the Native Americans. During his three-year tour, he conceived the idea of starting a congregation of brothers to work alongside the missionary priests. On returning to Europe, he set about planning to found such a society in Belgium, a country eminent for missionary zeal. Founding When Ryken returned to the US in 1837, he decided that the children of Catholic immigrants were more in need of instruction than were those of Native Americans. Bishop Rosati of St. Louis, Missouri encouraged him to found a congregation of laymen to teach all classes of youth. Six other bishops sanctioned his plan to bring religious teachers to the United States. Ryken served a term of probation in the novitiate of the Redemptorist Fathers to prepare to go to Rome to receive the permission and blessing of Pope Gregory XVI for his mission. He modelled the religious garb of members of his institute after that of the Redemptorists. The spirit of the Xaverian Brothers, on the other hand, can be traced to the influence of Rev.
