Floyd, Ph.D. Strategic Plan 2014-2019 Introduction The 2014-19 strategic plan builds on the previous five-year plan, recognizing the core values and broad mission of Washington State University. Goals and strategies were developed to achieve significant progress toward WSU’s aspiration of becoming one of the nation’s leading land-grant universities, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement. The plan emphasizes the institution’s unique role as an accessible, approachable research institution that provides opportunities to an especially broad array of students while serving Washington state’s broad portfolio of social and economic needs. While providing exceptional leadership in traditional land-grant disciplines, Washington State University adds value as an integrative partner for problem solving due to its innovative focus on applications and its breadth of program excellence.     NEWS RELEASE Singapore, 28 July 2020 NTU President Subra Suresh’s achievements in engineering recognised with ASME’s most prestigious medal Professor Subra Suresh, President of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (NTU Singapore), has been unanimously selected by the Board of Governors of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to receive its highest honour, the 2020 ASME Medal. A professional society founded in 1880 and currently comprising more than 100,000 members from over 140 countries, ASME awards this accolade annually to no more than one individual to celebrate eminently distinguished engineering achievements. President Suresh, who is also NTU’s inaugural Distinguished University Professor, is recognised for his “pioneering contributions to the science and technology of mechanical engineering through multidisciplinary research, impactful work in education and mentoring, leadership in academia and government, and innovation in connecting research to industry and policy”, said ASME. He joins a distinguished list of only 87 previous recipients of the ASME Medal since the award was first created in 1920. The list includes Theodore von Kármán, aviation pioneer and co-founder of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Willis Carrier, the father of modern air conditioning; Dean Kamen, who invented the Segway; and Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motor Co. Moon Joseph C Ford Professor of Mechanical Engineering Emeritus ASME Engineer Historian 2011 Draft: January 15, 2015 Preface Interest in the history of mechanical engineering began for me during my tenure as Chair of T&AM (1980- 1987) when I came across a book “The Mechanical Engineer in America: 1830 - 1910”, written by a Smithsonian historian, Monte A. Calvert in 1967. It contained a Chapter on the Sibley College of Mechanic Arts at Cornell and the conflict between the proponents of a ‘shop culture’ and an ‘academic or school culture’ in the teaching of mechanical engineering. This debate was resolved with the arrival of Professor Robert Thurston from Steven’s Institute of Technology who was the first president of the ASME. Later I discovered a set of three 1890’s volumes of the Sibley Journal of Engineering at The Bookery, our local rare books store, and was fascinated with the dynamic academic life of the early College of Mechanical Engineering. In the course of my research into Cornell’s historic Reuleaux Collection of kinematic models and through my travels in Europe and Germany, circa 2001, I discovered how wide the reputation of Cornell’s Sibley College was a century ago. With the coming celebration of Cornell’s sesquicentennial in 2015 it dawned on me that my generation of retired professors had lived one third of Cornell’s history. With the encouragement and support of Prof Robert Cooke’s oral history project, I began to record interviews with more than a dozen senior and retired faculty in the Sibley School and T&AM.

    P-3.1 6/20 SOCIETY POLICY POLLING AND BALLOTING PROCEDURE FOR HONORS, MEDALS AND AWARDS I. PREFACE A. By-Law B2.1 states in part: "To promote the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences to diverse communities throughout the world the Society shall:...""...Offer awards and other honors to encourage contributions to engineering; confer awards and other honors in recognition of meritorious contributions to engineering." B. By-Law B5.2.8.1 states, "The Committee on Honors, under the direction of the Board of Governors, shall recommend properly selected candidates for honors, medals, Honorary Members, and awards, and as required shall recommend recipients of joint awards, all subject to approval by the Board of Governors. However, the Board may delegate to the Committee on Honors the power to approve candidates for any honor, medal, or award other than Honorary Member or ASME Medalist." C. The Committee on Honors Operation Guide describes the procedures of nominating and electing recipients of Honorary Membership, the ASME Medal and other honors, medals and awards. II. PURPOSE To define the polling and balloting procedures for honors, medals, and awards. III. POLICY A. All honors, medals and awards which are the responsibility of the Committee on Honors are to be decided with at least five members of the Committee present and voting, and with no more than one negative vote.
