Read More KOCHI: Despite living in a society marred by violence and intolerance in the name of religion, traditions and ideologies, Kachchh district stands out as an exception as this region remained peaceful even during one of the worst communal riots in Gujarat.

This is what motivated filmmaker couple Anjali Monteiro and K P Jayasankar to do a documentary series on the pastoral communities of Kachchh region.

The award-winning documentary filmmakers were in Kochi as part of the second screening of their latest documentary film titled 'A Delicate Weave' at Children's Park Theatre on Saturday.

The third film in the Kachchh trilogy series narrates the musical journey of four passionate musicians who belong to the pastoral communities of Kachchh.

"Despite Kachchh being a melting pot of religions, it remained calm while violence was unleashed in rest of Gujarat. This inspired us to explore the socio-cultural fabric of Kachchh that makes it an island of peace in a sea of intolerance, and that is when we decided to embark on the process of documenting the Sufi traditions of music, storytelling and poetry which are integral part of the pastoral community over there," said the couple, who are professors at the School of Media and Cultural Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai (TISS).

Through the documentary, they have tried to present the rustic livelihood of the pastoral communities and woven it with musical and syncretic traditions of spiritual and belief systems.

The documentary literally transports the viewers to the present-day life in the rural Kachchh, considered to be the citadel of the Indus Valley civilization.

The documentary unfolds through songs and music of a carpet weaver called Naranbhai Siju and a group of young men in Bhujodi who come together to sing the bhajans of Kabir every evening.

"We are breaking down the walls that have been built up through the politics of hatred and intolerance through our music and traditions," says Naranbhai Siju, a local, in the documentary. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/a-delicately-woven-musical-journey/articleshow/61327875.cms 3/36 11/4/2017 A delicately woven musical journey - Times of India

Zareena Hasan Zodha, the feisty women from Lakhpat, who dared to sing songs in her village is another interesting character in the film.

The 67-minute documentary in detail discusses folk music traditions, religious diversity and syncretistic beliefs, repertoire of poetry, folk lore, embroidery and architectural practices of people living there.

"It is interesting to note that the pastoral communities even today draw upon bhakti poems written by Kabir Das, who is known as the mystic-weaver poet. Similarly, the poems of Sindhi-Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai are still sung by the communities. Majority of these poems are based on legendary stories," said Jayasankar.

Affordability, pure air attract buyers

tnn | Oct 29, 2017, 11.44 PM IST Kochi: Availability of vast space and affordable rate make eastern parts of the district a new destination for people to invest money on land.

Registration officials say low fair value, availability of water and pure air attract people to eastern parts such as Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha.

"Kochi city and western parts of it don't have vast land available while eastern parts have expansive land and agriculture plots. If anybody wants half acres to do farming, it is easily available in eastern parts. Because of non-polluted air, flats are coming up in Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam areas," said district registrar Biju P K.

The fair value is much cheaper in the hilly areas.

"The fair value for 1 Are (2.47cents) is Rs 1.5 lakh. The value of land at Pindimana and Keerambara is very low. Since the area is situated adjacent to Periyar river, the availability of water is not a problem here. We do 20-22 registrations per day in the office. Before the government made rules strict and fixed fair value, around 40-45 registrations were made in the office," said a senior official in Kothamangalam sub-registrar office. While Muvattupuzha sub-registrar said close monitoring by income tax officials dissuade many to invest in real estate.

"As many as 3,611 land transactions were made in the office from January this year till date. When people come to buy land spending more than Rs 10 lakh, we report it to income tax officials who look https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/a-delicately-woven-musical-journey/articleshow/61327875.cms 8/36 11/4/2017 A delicately woven musical journey - Times of India into the source of income of buyers. Since many cannot reveal the source of income, they stay away from buying land. People who used to invest black money in real estate sector are now finding it difficult to do so now," said Muvattupuzha registrar Sunil.

NEXT STORY Kochi’s realty sector yet to recover from demonetisation effect

T C Sreemol | tnn | Oct 29, 2017, 11.43 PM IST

Kochi: Demonetisation has hit the real estate industry in Kochi badly and there is a 26 % drop in land and flat transactions during post-demonetisation period.

Between November 1, 2015 and October 31, 2016, about 45,181 land and flats were registered and the area transacted was 1,843.43 hectare in the district. It came down to 33,025 registrations from November 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017 and the extent of area transacted during this period is 1,406.54 hectare. Registration department officials said another 2,500 to 3,500 registrations will be done in October and another 1,000 hectare will be transacted this month. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/a-delicately-woven-musical-journey/articleshow/61327875.cms 15/36 11/4/2017 A delicately woven musical journey - Times of India

Registration officials and economists attribute the decline in the transactions to demonetisation. While environmentalists are happy about the decline in transactions since there would be a decline in the construction activities.

"Nowadays, most land transactions in Ernakulam take place in eastern part of the district, including Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam where land is available. After demonetisation was implemented, state government made valuation certificate mandatory for buildings, which the customer prefer to buy. The valuation certification, certified by the chartered engineer in the local body, should be provided while registering. This prevented builders from selling flat at exorbitant rate. The valuation certificate is prepared by fixing rate per square feet of the building," said Biju P K, Ernakulam district registrar.

"Both the real estate and unorganized sectors suffered badly after demonetization was implemented in November last year. Earlier, people who hoarded black money used to invest in real estate sector. They had 40-50 % black money. But with the demonetisation, they got scared to invest in real estate since tax officials started to monitor all the transactions. It is the fear of monitoring that dissuades many to invest in the real estate. Demonetisation also helped to bring down speculation in the sector. If the current situation in the sector continues and speculation comes to an end, ordinary people can buy houses at affordable prices. Now, only those who are in actual need invest in the real estate sector," said Martin Patrick, chief economist of Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) in Kochi.

Land registration officials and real estate players said that unlike in the past, the buyers are now interested in small chunks of land, that's below 5 cents. Also they are willing to move away from prime land and invest in property in places like Kothamangalam and Muvattapuzha that is comparatively greener.

An official in Njarakkal sub-registration office said people now buy small plots to construct house instead of buying large plots as they did earlier. "Only the actual buyers who want to construct a house on four to five cents of land buy the plot in the district," he said.

The Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India, Kochi president Paul Raj said that demonetisation helped to stop speculation that was prevalent in real estate sector. "The speculative approach in the sector has stopped. Only the buyers who actually need a house invest in the sector now. With the implementation of Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), the sector will become more transparent which will encourage customers to buy apartments," he said.

NEXT STORY ‘Yellow rain’ triggers panic again

tnn | Oct 29, 2017, 11.32 PM IST Idukki: Cumbumettu town and nearby areas in Idukki district received 'yellow rain' on Saturday morning, creating panic among farmers here. This is not the first such incident in the district and the droplets are feared to be acidic that could damage plantations in the area.

The yellow droplets were first noticed by residents after they fell on vehicle seats and glasses, on which they are more visible. The droplets initially thought to be paint, were soon followed by showers. The droplets were resistant to soap, said some people who have raised concerns over acidic nature of the rain.

When the phenomenon happened in May last year, the scientists from Indian Cardamom Research Institute (ICRI) had conducted a study and concluded that it was no acidic in nature and won't cause much damage. However, agricultural officials are planning to undertake another study, said Prince Mathew, Idukki agricultural assistant director. tnn
