5 President’s Message

Herb Stoick — President Absaroka Region

Welcome to March everyone, personally, I'm glad February is over and I an going to buy a ground- hog license. This month we will be hosting a zone presidents meeting the weekend of the seven- teenth, while information is scarce we know all members are invited to dinner on Saturday night.

The club has decided on beer steins to celebrate our forty year anniversary and Dan has them or- dered. Oktoberfest restaurant is exited to work with us for possible car show there to celebrate our anniversary, possibly in late September or early October, we need to pick a date soon so feedback would be appreciated. Drive safe everyone, and see you soon (breakfast at Grains of Montana Sat- urday, March 10th).

Herb

Absaroka 40th Anniversary Beer Steins We have ordered a quantity of 50 genuine “Made in Germany” beer steins to help us celebrate our 40th anniversary later this year. The Steins are cobalt blue and tan and hold .5 Liters or a Pint. They will look like the photo without a lid. Our 40th anni- versary logo will be on them in full color, opposite the handle. The cost each is going to be around $20, but we haven't gotten that all sorted out yet. These will really be a nice memento of our Region. More to come.

No one left hungry for sure and it was a fun way to get together in the cold of a Montana winter.

Herb held a club meeting and the primary topic of dis- cussion was the beer steins for our 40th anniversary later this summer. We’ve elected to get a genuine Ger- man stein for our 40th birthday. We’ll have a final cost

Attending the event from Billings were Jim and Francie Hasbrouck, Stephanie Haider, Fred Magers and Dan Cole and Jo Pintz-Cole. 10 11 Porsche Mourns the Death of Dan Gurney . Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG mourns the death of Daniel Sexton Gurney. The racing driver and Formula 1 pilot died on January 14, 2018 at the age of 86. Porsche owes its only success as a vehicle manufacturer in the Formula 1 World Championship to Gurney, who won the 1962 French Grand Prix in Rouen in an eight-cylinder Porsche 804. Just a week later Gurney led from start to finish to triumph at the near Stuttgart; his team-mate Joakim Bonnier took second place to secure a one-two for the air-cooled Porsche Type 804 in front of its home crowd.

Driving appearances for the Swabian sports car manufacturer in 1961 and 1962 would leave lasting memo- ries; as Gurney once reflected, “It was with Porsche that I really learned how to drive–because they gave me cars that didn’t constantly break down and I could lay down the kilometers faster than ever before.” Gurney was considered to be an all-round talent in the field of motorsport: The American enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career and was the first driver to win races in Formula 1, NASCAR and the IndyCar Series, as well as sports car races, including with his own team. With the invention of the “Gurney flap”, he improved aerodynamic efficiency by adding a spoiler to the rear wing. He was also the first driver to spray champagne on the podium, inadvertently starting a tradition that is now imitated all around the world.

Porsche also helped him to find lifelong happiness in his private life in the 1960s when he married his wife Evi, the former German motor sports journalist and secretary to the Porsche Racing Manager Huschke von Hanstein.
