FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS Contact : CPT Lance Office : 6768 3384 Hp : 9617 3066 National Day Parade at Marina Bay 2008 PARADE AND CEREMONY Guard-of-Honour Contingents As per all National Day Parades, the Guard-of-Honour (GOH) contingents will comprise of the best unit from each Service of the SAF and the Singapore Police Force. This year in NDP 08, the four contingents forming the GOH are: • Singapore Army o 1st Commando Battalion • Republic of Singapore Navy o Naval Diving Unit • Republic of Singapore Air Force o Air Power Generation Command o Air Defence and Operations Command 1 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS • Singapore Police Force o Police Training Command o ‘A’ Division o ‘D’ Division o ‘E’ Division o ‘F’ Division o ‘G’ Division o ‘J’ Division o ‘AP’ Division o Police Coast Guard o Special Operations Command o Traffic Police Department 2 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS SAF Colours With all past National Day Parades, one of the key features is the uncasing and showcasing of the SAF Colours. The Colours are significant symbols of unit cohesion and esprit de corps, inspiring a strong sense of pride and spirit of unity in the servicemen. There are two types of Colours: State Colours and Regimental Colours. The Colours are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of combat, training, administrative efficiency and service to the community. The State Colours incorporate the design of the State Flag with the Service Crest emblazoned at the bottom right hand corner of the Colours while the Regimental Colours bear the appropriate crests or logos of the Formations or Units. When placed side by side, the State Colours and Regimental Colours signify the pride and loyalty of servicemen to their Services, Formations and Units. This year, NDP 08 will carry on the tradition of displaying the grandeur of the SAF Colours. These Colours symbolises the spirit of SAF and the formations and Units that they represent. The following units will be carrying out the honour of uncasing and marching in the 35 regimental Colours along with the 3 State Colours. It centres on having the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) that is able to deter aggression and secure a swift and decisive victory over the aggressor should deterrence fail. The SAF is continually widening its capabilities to deal with both conventional and unconventional threats to the nation’s security. This is in addition to the high quality training and weapons maintenance present. This year, there will be 6 military contingents, comprising of 4 Army, 1 RSAF and 1 RSN contingents, representing Military Defence. The divisions and formations making up the contingents are: • Singapore Army o 3rd Singapore Division o 6th Singapore Division o 9th Singapore Division o Combat Service Support Command • Republic of Singapore Navy o Navy Training Command 5 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS • Republic of Singapore Air Force o Air Combat Command o Air Power Generation Command o Participation Command Total Defence Contingents – Civil Defence Civil Defence provides for the law and order, safety and basic needs of the entire community so as to ensure normality in times of emergency and crisis. Civil Defence aims to produce a civilian population that is familiar with procedures for survival and protection, and with arrangements for relief services as well as emergency supply of critical items like blood, food and water. The two contingents representing Civil Defence are: • Singapore Police Force o Police Training Command • Singapore Civil Defence Force o HQ SCDF o Civil Defence Training Academy o Basic Rescue Training Centre (BRTC) o 1st Division HQ o 2nd Division HQ o 3rd Division HQ o 4th Division HQ 6 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS Total Defence Contingents – Economic Defence Economic Defence is about maintaining relevance and competition through rapid change and development. Upgrading our skills and knowledge helps us stay relevant and employable in this rapidly changing world. Our ability to embrace lifelong learning and re-training is vital to keeping our economy competitive. Putting in place business community measures and stockpiles of essential items also helps keep our economy running in times of crisis, showcasing the spirit of determination and perseverance. The three companies identify with the Singapore Spirit and participating with contingents portraying the Economic Defence are: • SembCorp Industries Ltd • Toll Logistics (Asia) Ltd • Hersing Group ERA Realty Network Pte Ltd Total Defence Contingents – Social Defence Social Defence aims to maintain racial and religious harmony among Singaporeans and is critical in ensuring peace and stability within Singapore. Social cohesion is strengthened by our understanding and sensitivity to various cultures and traditions. Through this, strong bonds are built across different 7 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS ethnic groups as well. As one people, we have the responsibility to contribute to the community by helping the less fortunate and underprivileged among us, regardless of race, language or religion. There will be two contingents representing Social Defence. They are: • National Trades Union Congress • People’s Action Party Total Defence Contingents – Psychological Defence Psychological Defence is about having pride in, being loyal and staying committed to our nation. Unity in pride and passion for the country will provide Singaporeans with the will, tenacity and commitment to defend what is ours and safeguard our sovereignty and independence. There will be 9 Uniformed Youth Organisations from the Ministry of Education representing Psychological Defence. They also represent the fighting spirit of our youth and the future of Singapore. They are: • The Boys’ Brigade of Singapore • National Police Cadet Corps • The Girls’ Brigade of Singapore • Girl Guides Singapore • National Civil Defence Cadet • St John Ambulance Brigade Corps • Singapore Red Cross Society • National Cadet Corps • Singapore Scout Association 8 FACTSHEET – PARADE PARTICIPANTS 9 .
