Notes on the Design and Execution of the Painting, Iconic Landscapes of Chicago Craig D. Farnsworth, ASLA [email protected] Copyright 2009 Artist’s Statement This painting grew out of a desire to create a poster to commemorate two significant events of 2009 in Chicago: the Centennial of the Plan of Chicago and the ASLA Annual Meeting. The piece is intended to portray the context within which Windy City landscape architects design and execute their projects. It was also designed to be compatible with the ASLA Centennial poster I had painted ten years prior that commemorated significant landscapes of Illinois. This new painting picks up where the first one left off; it focuses on the Chicago parks that were mentioned but not illustrated in the earlier piece. Architecture and Landscape Chicago is a city recognized worldwide for its role in defining architecture. Indeed, the “Chicago School” is a term that is well understood to be a touchstone of Modern design. It is clear that in this context, designs on the land are often framed and defined by architecture. While this is not necessarily unique to Chicago, the personalities and imagery of city architecture are so pervasive and well-documented that they are a part of the local landscape. Given the wealth of historic parks in the city – parks that have stood the test of time and become significant in the eyes of the public – one of the first decisions made was how comprehensive the piece could be in documenting the parks and their designers. As millions of people living in the United States hold our breath in the face of a president-elect who seems hell-bent on waging war on immigrants, a series of recent events orchestrated by Culture Lab Detroit proved themselves to be exceptionally timely. "Culture Lab Detroit's 2016 theme is 'Walls,'" Culture Lab Detroit founder Jane Schulak says. "Participants in this year's programs are all connected by their interest in reconsidering the structures which define our lives." MetroTimes | CLD shines a light on the work of outstanding immigrant artists 1 This was certainly the case at "Art and the immigrant experience," a panel discussion featuring performers and artists Migguel Anggelo, Kia Arriaga, Rola Nashef, and Chido Johnson, and moderated by Gracie Xavier, director of corporate and economic development strategy at Global Detroit. "We chose panelists whose work specifically addresses the immigrant identity, and the challenges of living between two cultural worlds," Schulak says. "This is more important today than it was even a week ago. It was particularly interesting to discuss the evolution of voting privileges for immigrants following this election. I think overall we found that we all have a deep connection to our cultural roots, but also evolve as members of the community we surround ourselves with. "No matter what our background, we ultimately share the same human experience." The panel, which took place earlier this month, was packed to standing room, and underscored the ways in which immigrants have an experience that is both unique and universal. -

Detroit Modern Lafayette/Elmwood Park Tour DETROIT MODERN Lafayette Park/Elmwood Park Biking Tour Tour begins at the Gratiot Avenue entrance to the Dequindre Cut and ends with a ride heading north on the Dequindre Cut from East Lafayette Street. Conceived in 1946 as the Gratiot Redevelopment Project, Lafayette Park was Detroit’s first residential urban renewal project. The nation’s pioneering effort under the Housing Act of 1949; it was the first phase of a larger housing redevelopment plan for Detroit. Construction began at the 129-acre site in 1956. The site plan for Lafayette Park was developed through a collabora- tive effort among Herbert Greenwald, developer; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, architect; Ludwig Hilberseimer, city planner; and Alfred Caldwell, landscape architect. Greenwald had a vision of creating a modern urban neighborhood with the amenities of a suburb. Bounded by East Lafayette, Rivard, Antietam and Orleans Streets, Lafayette Park is based on the ‘super- block’ plan that Mies van der Rohe and Hilberseimer devised in the mid-1950s. The 13-acre, city-owned park is surrounded by eight separate housing components, a school and a shopping center. Mies van de Rohe designed the high-rise Pavilion Apartment buildings, the twin Lafayette Towers, and the low-rise townhouses and court houses in the International style for which he is famous. They are his only works in Michigan and the largest collection of Mies van de Rohe-designed residential buildings in the world. Caldwell’s Prairie style landscape uses native trees, curving pathways, and spacious meadows to create natural looking landscapes that contrast with the simplicity of the buildings and the density of the city. -

Many have admired Mies’s architecture since the 1920s, and know that his ideas were also transmitted as a professor, first at the Bauhaus in Europe and then as Director of the Department of Architecture at IIT. Caldwell, a practicing landscape architect and protégé of Jens Jensen, is perhaps less widely known, but was a major influence on IIT’s program especially in the areas of construction, landscape, and architectural history. In addition to his own works, Caldwell collaborated with Mies and architect Ludwig Hilberseimer, Director of City and Regional Planning at IIT and former Head of Building Theory at the Bauhaus, on the design of built works which left behind artifacts representing the ideal of “the city in the landscape.” This communication examines the broader perspective on urban design influenced by the symbiotic disciplines of architecture, city-regional planning and landscape as manifested in the individual and collaborative built work and pedagogy of Caldwell, Hilberseimer, and Mies. -

Detroit Dequindre Cut Greenway
Michigan Placemaking in Action… Detroit Dequindre Cut Greenway Before: The City of Detroit, in partnership with many state and private agencies, developed an abandoned below-level rail corridor formerly used by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad (referred to as the "Dequindre Cut"), into a 1.35-mile pedestrian/bicycle trail and greenway. The project provided a nonmotorized link from destinations inland, such as downtown Detroit and Eastern Market, to the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, the Detroit Riverwalk and surrounding neighborhoods. Federal TE funds were awarded to the project for site preparation, construction of access ramps at Lafayette Boulevard and Gratiot Avenue, stormwater and utility improvements, installation of security cameras, and the trail construction. • Federal TE investment: $2,055,448 • Matching Funds: $513,862 from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan • Public/Private Partnership: The greenway would not have been possible if it were not for a strong public/private partnership between the City of Detroit, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Southeast Michigan After: Community Foundation Greenways Initiative, Kellogg Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Downtown Detroit Partnership, SmithGroup JJR, community advocacy groups (such as the Riverfront East Alliance and the Lafayette-Elmwood neighborhood), the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. • Phase Two of the Dequindre Cut is a component of the $10 million 2012 Federal TIGER Award for the “Link Detroit!” multi-modal infrastructure improvement project.
