Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 An Exhibition and Public Program Touring Internationally, 2016-2017 Roee Rosen, still from Confessions Coming Soon, 2007, video. 8:40 minutes. Video, possibly more than any other form of communication, has shaped the world in radical ways over the past half century. It has also changed contemporary art on a global scale. Its dual “life” as an agent of mass communication and an artistic medium is especially intertwined in Israel, where artists have been using video artistically in response to its use in mass media and to the harsh reality video mediates on a daily basis. The country’s relatively sudden exposure to commercial television in the 1990s coincided with the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, and major shifts in internal politics. Artists responded to this in what can now be considered a “renaissance” of video art, with roots traced back to the ’70s. An examination of these pieces, many that have rarely been presented outside Israel, as well as recent, iconic works from the past two decades offers valuable lessons on how art and culture are shaped by larger forces. Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 traces the development of contemporary video practice in Israel and highlights work by artists who take an incisive, critical perspective towards the cultural and political landscape in Israel and beyond. Showcasing 35 works, this program includes documentation of early performances, films and videos, many of which have never been presented outside of Israel until now. Informed by the international 1 history of video art, the program surveys the development of the medium in Israel and explores how artists have employed technology and material to examine the unavoidable and messy overlap of art and politics. -

Claudia Gioia - Let’s start with your history. Your artistic education, your cultural references and influences and your personal path. How do you place your research and who were and who are your companions? Nahum Tevet – During my High School I started taking courses in painting and drawing. I was born in a kibbutz, and the kibbutz educational system was very supporting for art. I saw myself as a painter and immediately after the army I was looking for a place to study. I felt that the schools were not good places. I mean at that time the Academy was, only at the beginning, as a contemporary art school. There was actually Raffi Lavie, whose retrospective is now at the Venice Biennial, and in those years, in 1969 and 1970 he magnetized a group of young artists that studied with him mostly on a private basis. I was 23 and he was 33, at that time he was leading a real, I wouldn’t say revolution, but he was the most important figure in creating a new young scene of Israeli art. One could say that it was really the beginning of contemporariness; it was the end of a certain kind of painting that was mainly a local version of French abstraction. There were some three or four wonderful painters that were not known internationally. One of them was extremely important for the new generation: Arie Aroch. He was a painter and an intellectual who served the Israeli ambassador in Sweden at the time of Pontus Hulten, he knew about Duchamp and he saw Jasper Jones and Rauschenberg in real time, and somehow it influenced his work. -

Fields of Vision: Landscapes by Israel Hershberg Til den 4. februar 2013 Som en af Israels mest fremragende realistiske malere har Israel Hershberg haft en karriere som kunstner, underviser og grundlæggende leder af Jerusalem Studio School, hvor han i over fire årtier har tilført en ny dimension til den israelske kunstkanon. Hershberg, der er kendt for sin omhyggelige, direkte og skarpe iagttagelsesevne, har i de sidste ti år udvidet sin egen kunstneriske produktions horisont ved at bevæge sig fra stilleben og interiør til vidtstrakte landskaber, hvor hvert panorama er et resultat af et omfattende og minutiøst arbejde. Fields of Vision præsenterer tre store landskaber og et forberedende studie lavet i Italien og Israel, som udgør et centralt kapitel i Hershbergs værk. Nelly Agassi: Video Work Til den 2. april 2013 Denne udstilling udforsker den israelske kunster Nelly Agassis videokunst fra begyndelsen af hendes kunstneriske karriere i midten af 1990'erne til i dag. I de ti udstillede værker bruger Agassi sin egen krop som platform for gentagne handlinger, der beskæftiger sig med kvindelighed, følelsesmæssig oplevelse og fysisk smerte. Skønt hendes værk dokumenterer disse handlinger med en umiddelbarhed meget lig 1970'ernes kunst, hvor kroppen også ofte var i centrum, så adskiller intimiteten ved Agassis kreativitet hende fra 1970’ernes kunstnere, der brugte kroppen til ideologiske formål. -

Published by American Research Institute for Policy Development DOI: 10.15640/ijaah.v4n2p3 URL: https://doi.org/10.15640/ijaah.v4n2p3 Revisiting Israeli Art Canon: The Story of Mashkof Group, 1968-1970 Noa Avron Barak1 Abstract This historiographical article’s main goal is to fill the critical gap in the historical narrative of Israeli art by uncovering the activity of a previously unstudied, yet highly influential, Mashkof group - a multidisciplinary group of painters, poets and musicians operated in Jerusalem during the years 1968 to 1970. The group aimed to challenge old forms of art made in the city and to undermine institutional conventions of art presentation. Mashkof operated duringan important era in Israeli art as it shifted from art of the object to conceptual art.While Mashkof is not considered to be part of the local, narrow-based, art canon, its role in this conceptual turn is crucial. This article will fill this lacuna in the research of Israeli art and argue that Mashkof’s unique group activity formed the basis for the growth of conceptual art and conceptualism in Jerusalem as early as the late 1960s, and established the institutional and public acceptance that allowed its nationwide spread in the 1970s. Keywords: Israeli Art, artists groups, proto- conceptual art, 1960s, 1970s. Introduction The late 1960s and early 1970s are a fascinating and turbulent time in Israeli art history. Much like the art hubs in Europe and the United States at the time, Israeli art responded to surrounding external and internal changes in the art scene; both the art world and art production and consumptions had undergone tremendous transformations. -

Indeed, from the revival of the Hebrew language at the end of the nineteenth century and all throughout the defining events of the last one hundred years, the trend of the textually sacrosanct appearing as a persistent motif in Judaic cultural production has only increased. -

Among the new acquisitions are works by three famous French artists, Degas, Derain and Berard; by an Italian, Modigllanl, who did his principal work in France; and by the ex-German, Eric Isenburger, and the Palestinian, Reuven Rubin, both of whom are now in the United States. A sculpture and a drawing by Jacques Lipchitz, now living in the United States, complete the group. The Modigliani painting Bride and Groom has been given by Frederic Clay Bartlett, noted collector and patron of art, who is an Honorary Trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. -

Er entlehnt seine Darstellungen historischen Familienfotografien. Auch wenn es zunächst so scheint, als stünde die familiäre, persönliche Geschichte im Mittelpunkt, so geht es ihm vielmehr darum, etwas über die Art und Umsetzung der Malerei zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Dabei reflektiert er ihre Geschichte aber auch zeitgenössische Positionen. Die Familie ist der anfängliche, sichtbare Orientierungspunkt und zugleich Metapher für die Vielschichtigkeit der Kunstwelt; ein weit verzweigter künstlerischer Stammbaum, der wie alle Familien Schatten wirft, Dinge ermöglicht und andere blockiert. Olafs Biografie unterscheidet sich von den meisten seiner in Israel lebenden und arbeitenden Zeitgenossen. Sein Werdegang beginnt als Jugendlicher im Atelier des Bildhauers und Bauzeichners Zvi Lachman; unter dessen Anleitung studiert er Malerei, betrachtet Rembrandt und kopiert Cézanne. Im Laufe der Jahre wird Olaf sein Schüler, nicht gerade eine übliche Kunstausbildung in Israel. Während man eher die Auseinandersetzung mit Kunstwerken in den Mittelpunkt stellt, wurde Olaf durch einen erfahrenen Künstlers wie zu Zeiten der Renaissance geprägt. Später ging er nach New York, um seine Studien in einem formaleren Kontext an der New York Studio School und an der Parsons School fortzusetzen. Als er nach Tel Aviv zurückkehrte, durchlebte er eine künstlerische Krise. Im Irrgarten der Möglichkeiten, Richtungen und Stile war ihm die israelische Kunst zunächst fremd. In seinem Studio schuf er großformatige, expressive und figurative Bilder auf Leinwand und fühlte sich von Francis Bacon und Georg Baselitz inspiriert.
