Weaver) ABSTRACT The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology.

  • Two Wheeled Balancing Robot
University of Southern Queensland Faculty of Engineering and Surveying Building a Two Wheeled Balancing Robot A dissertation submitted by Mr Peter Miller In fulfilment of the requirements of Courses ENG4111 and 4112 Research Project towards the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) Submitted: October, 2008 i Abstract Two wheeled balancing robots are an area of research that may well provide the future locomotion for everyday robots. The unique stability control that is required to keep the robot upright differentiates it from traditional forms of robotics. The inverted pendulum principle provides the mathematical modelling of the naturally unstable system. This is then utilised to develop and implement a suitable stability control system that is responsive, timely and successful in achieving this objective. Completing the design and development phase of the robot requires careful consideration of all aspects including operating conditions, materials, hardware, sensors and software. This process provides the ongoing opportunity of implementing continued improvements to its perceived operation whilst also ensuring that obvious problems and potential faults are removed before construction. The construction phase entails the manufacture and assembly of the robots circuits, hardware and chassis with the software and programming aspects then implemented. The later concludes the robots production where the final maintenance considerations can be determined. These are essential for ensuring the robots continued serviceability. The analysis and evaluation of the completed robot provides the ability to assess the robots effectiveness and efficiency in maintaining stability. This allows a comparison to be undertaken between the actual system performances and the anticipated project objectives. The opportunity to calibrate and perform additional fine tuning of the design is also explored.

An interesting read I'm a fan of Blur so I've read a few books on the band. On the whole the book was insightful and interesting, I particularly enjoyed the sections on The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Damon's opera work and the Everyday Robots album. The content on Blur and Gorillaz has been done before in other books and so if you've already read other books you won't find anything new here. The sections on Damon's early years and the impact his drama background has upon his performances was interesting but large chunks of the Blur and Gorillaz sections were just descriptions of album tracks (which if you're reading this book you're most likely a fan and already know them well) and lists of tour dates with descriptions of the tours.

It is an area of open grassland, woodland and ponds towards the southern end of Epping Forest, owned and managed by the City of London Corporation (COL). The Flats are highly valued by local residents as a natural open space in a heavily built-up area of northeast London and has a high conservation value, as recognised by its statutory protection, with an additional, largely hidden heritage. With predicted local population growth and consequent additional visitor pressure, it is timely to review the current issues faced in the management of this site and plan for the future, to sustain this well cared for and much loved landscape. This Individual Site Plan lists current management considerations but also presents a strategic work programme to ensure a sustainable future for the conservation and heritage interest of Leyton Flats, along with its immense recreational value. INTRODUCTION Leyton Flats , covering around 75 hectares, makes up one of 38 management compartments and covers 3% of the surface area of Epping Forest. Epping Forest is one of London’s largest and most significant natural Open Spaces, managed in perpertuity by the City of London Corporation, as The Conservators of Epping Forest, under the auspices of the Epping Forest Acts 1878 and 1880.

COCOI: Contact-aware Online Context Inference for Generalizable Non-planar Pushing Zhuo Xu1;2∗,Wenhao Yu3, Alexander Herzog1, Wenlong Lu1, Chuyuan Fu1, Masayoshi Tomizuka2, Yunfei Bai1, C. Karen Liu4, Daniel Ho1 Abstract— General contact-rich manipulation problems are long-standing challenges in robotics due to the difficulty of understanding complicated contact physics. Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has shown great potential in solving robot manipulation tasks. However, existing RL policies have limited adaptability to environments with diverse dynamics properties, which is pivotal in solving many contact-rich manipulation tasks. In this work, we propose Contact-aware Online COntext Inference (COCOI), a deep RL method that encodes a context embedding of dynamics properties online using contact-rich interactions. We study this method based on a novel and challenging non-planar pushing task, where the robot uses a monocular camera image and wrist force torque sensor reading to push an object to a goal location while keeping it upright. We run extensive experiments to demonstrate the capability of COCOI in a wide range of settings and dynamics properties Fig. 1: Our method, COCOI, achieves dynamic-aware, non- in simulation, and also in a sim-to-real transfer scenario on a planar pushing of an upright 3D object. The method is real robot (Video: https://youtu.be/nrmJYksh1Kc). robust against domain variations, including various objects I. INTRODUCTION and environments, in both simulation and the real world. The first and second columns show the table simulation setting Contact rich manipulation problems are ubiquitous in the in the robot’s perspective and the third party perspective, physical world.

©Copyright 2013 Julie Carpenter The Quiet Professional: An investigation of U.S. military Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel interactions with everyday field robots Julie Carpenter A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: John D. Bransford, Chair Stephen T. Kerr Leslie R. Herrenkohl Program Authorized to Offer Degree: College of Education University of Washington Abstract The Quiet Professional: An investigation of U.S. military Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel interactions with everyday field robots Julie Carpenter Chair of the Supervisory Committee: John D. Bransford, Ph.D. Educational Psychology This research explores interactions between Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel and the robots used every day. It was designed to richly describe the nuances of these interactions, especially those related to operator emotion associated with the robots. In this study, the EOD human-robot dynamic was investigated by interviewing 23 EOD personnel, collecting demographic information, and using one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Study results suggest EOD personnel relationships among peers and team members showed distinct patterns in human-human relationships as part of a Human- Human Interaction Model (HHIM) in terms of expectations of performance, and beliefs, values, and actions, related to their work. Findings described here also suggest performance expectations and other factors of the HHIM of teamwork do not map onto EOD personnel human-robot interactions. However, in some cases there is a tendency for personnel to ascribe human traits to robots, creating nuanced human-technology relationships introduced here as the Robot Accommodation Dilemma (RAD). These findings have implications for future personnel training and the refinement of robot design considerations for EOD and other fields that rely on critical small group communication and decision-making skills.

It begins with robots that are designed for the homes to assist with daily chores like cleaning. It continues with stories of how these mechanical beings become companions, pets and loved ones over a long-term period, a unique phenomenon we have little experienced with other technical artifacts. It ends with reflections targeted for robot designers about how we should go about designing future domestic robots. Ultimately, this is the story about how we live and will live with robots in the home. And it is not sci-fi fiction. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my advisors, Rebecca E. Grinter and Henrik I. Christensen whose endless trust and support have guided me to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
