Verifying Autonomous Robots: Challenges and Reflections Clare Dixon Department of Computer Science, The University of Manchester, UK https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/clare.dixon.html [email protected] Abstract Autonomous robots such as robot assistants, healthcare robots, industrial robots, autonomous vehicles etc. are being developed to carry out a range of tasks in different environments. The robots need to be able to act autonomously, choosing between a range of activities. They may be operating close to or in collaboration with humans, or in environments hazardous to humans where the robot is hard to reach if it malfunctions. We need to ensure that such robots are reliable, safe and trustworthy. In this talk I will discuss experiences from several projects in developing and applying verification techniques to autonomous robotic systems. New theories and tech- niques in combination with the ever-increasing performance of modern processors are at last giving robots and other artificial devices the power to interact automatically and usefully with their real, complex surround- ings. Today’s research robots no longer aim just to execute sequences of car-spraying commands or find their way out of contrived mazes, but to move independently through the world and interact with it in human- like ways. Artificially intelligent devices are now starting to emerge from laboratories and apply their abilities to real-world tasks, and it seems inevitable to me that this will continue at a faster and faster rate until they become ubiquitous everyday objects. The effects that artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and other tech- nologies developing in parallel will have on human society, in the rel- atively near future, are much greater than most people imagine — for better or worse. Ray Kurzweil, in his book ‘The Singularity is Near’, presents a strong case that the progress of technology from ancient times to the current day is following an exponential trend. Paris, 14 September 2017 Original: English REPORT OF COMEST ON ROBOTICS ETHICS Within the framework of its work programme for 2016-2017, COMEST decided to address the topic of robotics ethics building on its previous reflection on ethical issues related to modern robotics, as well as the ethics of nanotechnologies and converging technologies. At the 9th (Ordinary) Session of COMEST in September 2015, the Commission established a Working Group to develop an initial reflection on this topic. The COMEST Working Group met in Paris in May 2016 to define the structure and content of a preliminary draft report, which was discussed during the 9th Extraordinary Session of COMEST in September 2016. At that session, the content of the preliminary draft report was further refined and expanded, and the Working Group continued its work through email exchanges. The COMEST Working Group then met in Quebec in March 2017 to further develop its text. A revised text in the form of a draft report was submitted to COMEST and the IBC in June 2017 for comments. The draft report was then revised based on the comments received. The final draft of the report was further discussed and revised during the 10th (Ordinary) Session of COMEST, and was adopted by the Commission on 14 September 2017. Weaver) ABSTRACT The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology.
