TONIGHT'S GAME The Colorado Avalanche wraps up a four-game road trip tonight in Washington, D.C, against the Capitals. Colorado is 2-1-0 so far on this trip, falling in Tampa before winning at Florida and Pittsburgh. The Avs, who are 3-1-1 in their last five away from home, have won two straight road games for the first time this season. The Avs are currently in a stretch that has them playing 11 games in 20 days from Nov. 29 to Dec. 18.

AVS & CAPITALS The Avalanche and Capitals are meeting for the second and final time this season. The Avs won the first matchup 6-2 behind Gabriel Landeskog's first NHL hat trick and Nathan MacKinnon's career-high five-point night on Nov. 16 in Denver.

SEASON SERIES Nov. 16 vs. WSH (W, 6-2) Dec. 12 @ WSH

CONNECTIONS Semyon Varlamov was selected by the Capitals in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2006 Entry Draft and spent his first three NHL seasons in Washington.

LAST MEETING - NOV. 16 Colorado's top line of Gabriel Landeskog—Nathan MacKinnon—Mikko Rantanen combined for 12 points (5g/7a) in Colorado's 6-2 victory over the Capitals at Pepsi Center on Nov. 16. A look at the trio that night: • MacKinnon's five points (1g/4a) were a career high and the most by an Avalanche player since Dec. 9, 2007, when Milan Hejduk (6) and Paul Stastny (5) put up that many against the St. Louis Blues. MacKinnon's four assists were also a personal best and the most by a Colorado player since T.J. Galiardi had four helpers on Feb. 2, 2010 vs. Columbus. • Landeskog's hat trick was the first of his NHL career. His first goal came 17 seconds into the first period, the fastest goal to begin a game by an Avalanche player since Feb. 15, 2009 (Ian Laperriere at Detroit, 0:16). Landeskog's second marker came on a penalty shot, the first penalty-shot goal of his career (now 1-for-2) and the first successful penalty shot by a Colorado player since March 6, 2010 (Chris Stewart vs. St. Louis). • Rantanen set career highs in points (4) and assists (3). The 21-year-old was the youngest Avalanche player to record a four-point game since Matt Duchene (20) on Nov. 4, 2011 at Dallas.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs are playing back-to-back games for the seventh time this season, as they face the Capitals tonight after winning 2-1 last night in Pittsburgh. Colorado is 3-2-2 in the first game of a back-to-back this season and 2-4-0 in the second. The Avs will play a total of 11 back-to-back sets this year after also playing 11 in 2016-17.

CARRYING THE LOAD Nathan MacKinnon leads the Avalanche in points (33), goals (11) and assists (22) this season. MacKinnon, the NHL's First Star of the Month for November, has recorded 28 points (10g/18a) in his last 19 games dating back to Oct. 28.

NOTEWORTHY • Gabriel Landeskog needs two points to reach 300 for his career. • Erik Johnson leads Colorado in average ice time at 26:13, fifth highest in the NHL, and ranks second in the league in shifts-per- game (31.75). • Tyson Barrie leads Colorado's blueline in points (21) and assists (19), both of which rank among the NHL's top 10 defensemen. • Alexander Kerfoot is tied for fourth among NHL rookies in scoring with 21 points (9g/12a).

MILESTONE GAMES FOR EJ Erik Johnson appeared in his 400th game as a member of the Avalanche on Saturday night in Florida, joining Adam Foote (760) and John-Michael Liles (523) as the only defensemen to play 400 regular-season contests in an Avs sweater. EJ appeared in his 600th NHL game on Dec. 3 against Dallas, becoming the first defenseman from the 2006 draft class to play 600 games.

BUSY DECEMBER The Avalanche will play 15 games this month, including nine at Pepsi Center, which equals their busiest home December ever. Only twice before have the Avs hosted nine games in this particular month, also doing so in December of 2000-01 and 2011-12. This marks the second consecutive year that Colorado will play 15 total games in December, which also equals their most overall games in this month (sixth time). Eleven of Colorado's 15 games this month will come against Eastern Conference opponents.

MacKINNON NAMED NHL'S FIRST STAR FOR NOVEMBER Nathan MacKinnon was named the NHL's First Star of the Month for November. The 22-year-old tied Connor McDavid for the November scoring lead with 20 points (5g/15a) in 12 games. MacKinnon, however, did it in four fewer contests than McDavid, as Nathan averaged a league-best 1.67 points-per-game throughout the month. MacKinnon also led the NHL with 15 assists, the second-highest total ever by an Avalanche player during the month of November (Peter Forsberg 17 in 1995-96). In fact, it was the most helpers by an Avs player in a single month since 2002-03, when Forsberg had three different months of at least 15 assists. MacKinnon, who posted a league-best +11 plus/minus rating in November, collected seven multi-point games, highlighted by a career- high five-point effort on Nov. 16 vs. Washington. MacKinnon's 20 points equaled the third-highest total ever by an Avs player in November. He is the first Avalanche player to be named First Star of the Month since Craig Anderson in October of 2009.
