• The ACT Government committed $33 million as part of the 2016‐17 ACT Budget for the design and construction of a 50 metre pool in Stromlo Forest Park. • The design of the facility will allow for future expansion so it has the capacity to grow over time. • In January 2017 the ACT Government concluded an 8 week community engagement process to determine what additional facilities the community would like to see at SLC, if there was available budget. • 705 submissions were received and 10 meetings were held with key sport and recreation groups. Stromlo Pool • In addition to the originally planned 50m pool, program/learn to swim pool, kiosk and other associated amenities (i.e. change rooms), the most popular components requested by the community were: o Gym/health club o Splash park o Leisure water suitable for young children and hydrotherapy o More seating • These components will now be included in the government’s initial tender documentation, requiring contractors to separately price each component. • The request for tender for the design and construction of the Stromlo Pool has been released to the three shortlisted companies today. • Construction of Stromlo Pool is expected to commence before the end of 2017 and be completed by the end of 2019. Stromlo Pool Stromlo Pool Indoor Sports Facility Provision Feasibility Project

• This project will build on the Indoor Sport Study completed by the ACT Government in 2016. • $160,000 provided in 2017/18 Budget to progress the next phase of work. • Active Canberra is currently developing the project brief. While yet to be finalised, anticipated that the project will look to identify the preferred facility mix for potential further indoor sports provision in the ACT with consideration given to:

– location (Gungahlin, Woden and Belconnen are the identified regions to investigate potential facility options) – type of facility (new or expansion of existing facility, multi‐purpose or single‐purpose, co‐ location opportunities and facility standard) – business modeling to determine the viability of each of these facility options – expected impact any new facilities will have on existing facilities in the immediate catchment (i.e. loss of long‐term hirers) and how this could be offset by other user groups requiring additional access to indoor sport facilities – future facility aspirations of relevant State Sporting Organisation’s Indoor Sports Facility Provision Feasibility Project

• While not part of this next project, the ACT Government has also commissioned upgrades to existing school facilities to improve community access for sport and recreation use, with the priorities informed by feedback from sporting user groups. • Upgrades have been made at Alfred Deakin High School, Lyneham High School, Lake Tuggeranong High School, Wanniassa High School and the Hedley Beare Centre (Stirling). • Works to date have fully expended the Government’s initial $100,000 commitment. An additional $100,000 has been committed through the Education Directorate to undertake further targeted improvements. Ice Sports Facility Scoping Study • The ACT Government has committed $75,000 to fund scoping activities for a new ice sports facility in Canberra – as per 2016 election commitment. • Work on this project has recently commenced. • At this early stage, the ACT Government wishes to understand how big the facility would need to be, the size of the parcel of land that may be required to accommodate such a facility, how much parking would be needed to support it, what kind of capital cost is involved, potential operating costs. • The ACT Ice Sports Federation, representing the needs of key sports, is involved in the project. • Initial report due to be completed in late 2017.
