January International Tournaments There have been delays this year in confirming the playing times of the Women’s ASB Classic. It will now stretch into the Sunday finals with that twilight session starting at 5pm Sunday 6th. The Men’s ASB Classic will be as in previous years. With play from Monday to Saturday. Therefore in 2018/9 the first get together will be AFTERNOON Tea at 1.30pm on Monday 31st December . Play will start on centre court at 3 pm and the outside courts at 2 pm The MORNING tea during the Men’s week will be 10.30 am Monday 7th January. Angela has now sent all members the invitations to attend these. If you are based overseas but intend being back in Auckland then please let us know asap so we can ask for gate passes for you to come in to either or both Mondays. The email contained details of how to reserve your FREE ticket and gate passes to the morning / afternoon teas and the stand ticket to the relevant session. We must stress that although there is no charge for the teas and entry and you can ask for a ground pass for a partner to come with you to either or both occasions, if they want to sit in the stand with you, you must pay for those tickets. The cut off date for requests is Friday 5th October and forms, with or without extra ticket payments MUST be returned to Angela before then IF you intend coming. Every year since we have been doing this there have been last minute requests….but no late applications will be accepted this year. In the past the return forms have gone to Tennis Auckland but now, although payment is still made out to Tennis Auckland they need to be sent to Angela. Work out now whether you will be able to join us for one or both days and any ground passes needed. 2 IC Get together in Wellington September 16th The Wellington area IC members and partners held a wonderful friendly get together on Sunday 16 th at the home of Graeme and Jacquie Liddell. 2 new members were introduced and given their ties, former Tennis NZ chair David Howman and Marc Paulik a former top 20 ranked player who is coaching in Hutt Valley. David has since spent 13 years as director general of WADA, the World Anti Drugs Agency and after returning to live in NZ was appointed chair of the Athletics Integrity Unit last year, believing it is time the fight against drugs in sport was taken into the court room. President Cecilie McIntyre and Committee members Greg Long and Kevin Woolcott all spoke to update local members. Among others present were Marion Law, Sir Tom Eichelbaum , Colin Frampton, Guy Callen- der, Peter Osborne, Rodney Callender, Philip Seemann, Pat Guiney, Betty Knight, and David Patterson, Unfortunately Barrie Shute who helped to organise the event was overseas, David Patterson missed the main photo but was able to join us to catch up. Many thanks again to Graeme and Jacquie who welcomed everyone to their Khandallah home and organised delicious finger food. Our hosts were Graeme, the tall man at the back right, and Jacquie kneeling front lef. Our sincere thanks go to them. New members David and Marc with Cecilie . Greg, David P and Guy. 3 Future IC events overseas 2019 For members to think about! IC France will be celebrating their 90th Anniversary in September next year Le Touquet with a special IC Week at Le Touquet. This will be the 25th IC Week which is always a very special event to be part of. Paris Details are on the IC Council website. On the home page click IC Week France. The Windmill Trophy is the men’s event , with the Orsini Trophy played as a plate event. The women play for the Mercelis Trophy with the Winnie Wooldridge Plate ( which was won by the NZ team at Wimbledon in 1999!) The Windmill Trophy teams comprise 4 men, two Under 45 and two 45 +. The Mercelis Trophy teams have 2 women, one Under 40 and one 40+ . The Captain can be Playing or Non Playing in both teams so you can have an extra person. ITF rankings are taken into consideration for seeding. Supporters are welcome and will be able to join in the Dinners etc on payment of the fees which are all listed on the website. The other IC event we have been asked to join in is closer to home. This will be in October / November 2019 with dates to be confirmed. The Australian IC has invited NZ to send a team plus supporters to the get together they hold annually on the Gold Coast. The last 2 have been at the Royal Pines Resort where they have special accommodation arrangements. They envisage 2 days of activities, an official match and dinner and golf for those interested. The Gold Coast is easy for all NZ members to get to. 4 The IC of Barbados has also an IC Event planned. 8th 12th April 2019 This is a doubles week, for 6 players . 2 ladies with a combined age of 100+ , 2 men with combined ages of 105+ and another team of 120+. Two mixed doubles will also be played with combined ages of 105+ and 110. Check the IC Council website for more details for this and other IC events planned. It may be possible for NZ players to combine with another IC to make up a team. In the next Newsletter the Philanthropy sub committee will have a report. They have been working steadily doing an amazing amount of background planning including lesson plans to develop “character” as well as tennis skills to get this worthwhile initiative underway early next year. We are really pleased that several of our members who are now involved on the coaching side have offered their help. The team is well lead by our Vice President Russell Tills who made a special trip from London to the Canon Hill Park Tennis Club in Birmingham to meet with Felipe Buster from the IC of Chile, to view the ICGB Philanthropy programme. One of those involved with the Philanthropy planning is Mark Lewis . He has just had a wonderful “once in a lifetime experience “ which was just the opposite to helping disadvantaged children and his longtime work in Auckland schools developing the Tennis Hot Shots programme. I asked him to let us know about this. Recently I was very fortunate to have been given the honour to introduce my great friend Michael Stch at his inducton into the Internatonal Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Many of you will recall that I worked with Michael for six years and during that tme he won the Wimbledon Men’s Singles and Doubles ttles along with numerous other tournaments which took him as high as number two in the world rankings behind Pete Sampras. The inducton ceremony, on a beautful day in Newport in front of a large centre court crowd, was televised live in the States on the Tennis Channel. Thirteen Hall of Famers were present on the stage including Jim Courier, Stan Smith, Kim Clijsters and Rosie Casals and I can honestly say it was one on the proudest moments in my life when I stood before them to introduce Michael. Even though it was rather surreal at the tme, I felt very comfortable talking about Michael, describing him as a person and as a player. By all accounts I did a prety decent job of it - several women came up to me aferwards and remarked that they had been moved to tears. Michael’s speech was outstanding. He talked for twenty minutes of the cuf and in his second language without faltering once. He told a couple of great stories which drew laughter from the audience but also spoke from the heart about how he missed the players on tour afer his retrement. I’d like to share a couple of brief excerpts from my introducton and I hope that I did the ICNZ Club and NZ proud with what I had to say. For me it was a once in a lifetme experience and a memory I will cherish forever. Here are a couple of excerpts and photos : 5 “As a young child in New Zealand, I grew up with my tennis playing brothers pretending to be Rod Laver or Ken Rosewall in a Wimbledon Final. How that Kiwi kid connected with a German across the other side of the world is testament to the truly internatonal favour of tennis. I remember sitng with my brother Chris, a former Wimbledon singles fnalist, watching Michael tear apart a Swedish pro - ranked 70 in the world. Chris suggested Michael played a bit like Kevin Curren and I replied – only beter. He then said Michael would be tough on grass and I replied – he’s tough on any surface.

    Strides Toward Equality: The Portrayal of Black Female Athletes in Children’s Picturebooks Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rebekah May Bruce, M.A. Graduate Program in Education: Teaching and Learning The Ohio State University 2018 Dissertation Committee: Michelle Ann Abate, Advisor Patricia Enciso Ruth Lowery Alia Dietsch Copyright by Rebekah May Bruce 2018 Abstract This dissertation examines nine narrative non-fiction picturebooks about Black American female athletes. Contextualized within the history of children’s literature and American sport as inequitable institutions, this project highlights texts that provide insights into the past and present dominant cultural perceptions of Black female athletes. I begin by discussing an eighteen-month ethnographic study conducted with racially minoritized middle school girls where participants analyzed picturebooks about Black female athletes. This chapter recognizes Black girls as readers and intellectuals, as well as highlights how this project serves as an example of a white scholar conducting crossover scholarship. Throughout the remaining chapters, I rely on cultural studies, critical race theory, visual theory, Black feminist theory, and Marxist theory to provide critical textual and visual analysis of the focal picturebooks. Applying these methodologies, I analyze the authors and illustrators’ representations of gender, race, and class. Chapter Two discusses the ways in which the portrayals of track star Wilma Rudolph in Wilma Unlimited and The Quickest Kid in Clarksville demonstrate shifting cultural understandings of Black female athletes. Chapter Three argues that Nothing but Trouble and Playing to Win draw on stereotypes of Black Americans as “deviant” in order to construe tennis player Althea Gibson as a “wild child.” Chapter Four discusses the role of family support in the representations of Alice Coachman in Queen of the Track and Touch the Sky.

    2012 News Page 1 of 18 The Website of Maria Bueno, Tennis Champion 2012 NEWS ROGER FEDERER VISITS SAO PAULO, 6-9 December 2012 The Gillette Federer Tour kicked off Roger’s first South American visit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last week and he was keen to involve Maria in the proceedings. The two met at the Player Party, where Roger was joined by Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers. Roger invited Maria to hit with him so he could see her legendary backhand for himself and arrangements were made for them to take to the court laid at the Ibirapuera indoor arena. Maria instructed him not to hit ‘anything spinny’, to which Roger replied that he would play her like he does with his parents and afterwards admitted she was way much better than them! Later he posted a picture of them on his Facebook page, saying: “About to play tennis Maria Esther Bueno… she has won 19 Grand Slam titles (7 singles, 11 doubles and 1 mixed)… she still plays amazing!” As for Maria, she was just astonished at how well he hit the ball. “He sliced one backhand that sped off the court like it had skidded off a line,” she said. “I said: Whoa! What was that? And he just laughed! “It was a fantastic experience and I think he enjoyed it too!” The two players swapped gifts – she gave him a framed photograph, which she signed ‘You are simply the best’ while he presented her with one of his rackets, personally signed on the handle.

The Jordan Rule, named after Michael Jordan, was basically an unspoken law that means referees have to give the best player (i.e. Jordan) special privileges, based on the notion that he was the best, and that fans pay to see superstars thrive, and when superstars win, the league as a whole wins. Back in the day, you’d hear “Jordan Rule,” referenced when a star took an extra step that could easily be called as a traveling violation, or cursed out a ref, or even assaulted another player. And the rule is still prevalent today — unless you are a woman. We have secured a significant portion of our $18.5 million budget for the first phase of the redevelopment, with support from Auckland Council, Central Government, Foundation North and Lotteries, and are scheduled to commence works straight after the January 2018 ASB Classic. We are continuing to work to secure our final amounts of funding, through philanthropic and commercial supporters, and I would like to thank the Board members, Life Members, and other donors who have already committed to playing their part in funding what will be a legacy for generations to come. I would like to acknowledge in particular the efforts of Brent Robinson, our CEO, and Garry Scarborough, Board member, in working through the design process with our project managers and architects over the last 12 months, to get us to a point From the Chair where we have certainty around what we are able to deliver within our budget.

    18 Established 1961 Sunday, May 31, 2020 Sports Photo of the day ‘Am I next?’ Tennis phenom Gauff upset by black man’s death LOS ANGELES: Rising US tennis star Coco Gauff has added her voice to those expressing outrage at the death of an unarmed black man in Minnesota who was in police hands. Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who can be seen in video kneeling on the neck of a handcuffed George Floyd for at least five minutes, was charged with murder in Floyd’s death on Friday as violent protests continued around the country. Gauff, a 16-year-old African American, posted a TikTok video on her Twitter feed, juxtaposing an image of herself clad in a black hoodie with photos of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin and others. Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, was killed on February 23 while running in a residential neighbor- hood in Brunswick, Georgia. Taylor an emergency medical technician who was black, was shot and killed by police who burst into her home in Kentucky in March. Martin was a high school student when he was shot in 2012 in a killing that helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement. “Am I next?” a caption asks, as Gauff slowly raises her face and hands to the camera. “This is why I am using my voice to fight against racism,” continues the caption, over a gallery of slain African Americans that also includes Breonna “I am using my voice,” the cap- tion concludes, “Will you use yours?” Gauff burst on the international tennis scene last year at Wimbledon where she came through qualifying and beat her idol Venus Williams in the first round before exiting in the round of 16.

Media images of elite female athletes were deconstructed in order to analyze how media images of female athletes mold and influence public opinion and discourse. The findings of this study discuss stereotypes of femininity, while deconstructing how the media influences the societal interpretation of femininity, and how this affects the advancement of women’s sport.

    Trapped within the Ideological Power of Law: Women’s Experience Seeking Justice Noryamin Aini1,a, Muhammad Helmy Hakim2,b, Khoiruddin Nasution3,c 1 Department of Legal Sciences, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Indonesia 2 Faculty of Sharia, Antasari State Islamic University, Indonesia 3 Islmic Family Law, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Indonesia Keywords: Violance, objectivity, value-free, impartiality, feminists, justice Abstract: The legal positivism epistemologically argues that law is objectively constructed, non partisant, and impartially implemented. Even, it is widely claimed that everyone is equal befor the law. Hens Kelsen further obsessed theorizing the pure theory of law. The Kelsen’s Pure Theory of Law aims to describe law as a hierarchy of norms which are also binding norms while at the same time refusing, itself, to evaluate those norms. In this legal sense, legal sciences are to be separated from legal politics in order to keep laws independent, free from any kinds of intervention. The objectivity, impartiality, and the innocence of law have been epistemologically and practically challenged by legal feminist. This paper utilizing legal feminist perspectives illuminates empirically that law suffers a variety of gender bias. Firstly, the verbal construction of law is prevalently masculine reflecting male experience-awareness, and male standard-norms of social interpretation. Secondly, more importantly, at the practical domain, within legal profession, law has been mystified to surve the male interests. Finally, women’s struggles seeking justice in the formal legal path have been often trapped in a difficult situations, between hoping on the innocence of the law, or begging at the mercy of patriarchal reasoning of legal professionals.

A hint of pride too. “I couldn’t believe that the kids I started off with when they were eight or nine were in the biggest tournament in the world.” Now, as a summer fog descends on her Dunblane home, Murray’s mood has changed. All the optimism has been replaced by frustration. Last week she resigned from her post at Tennis Scotland, disgusted at the lack of backing from the country’s sports administrators and its politicians and fearing that youngsters who have the talent to win top titles could be forced to leave the game. She is not alone in her thinking. According to Murray, three of the four tennis development staff in Scotland have quit this year, allegedly fed up with their puny resources. Next to go, Murray fears, will be the country’s outstanding crop of young players, forced out of the game because there is simply not the money to help them break through into the big time, to compete alongside the Tim Henmans and Greg Rusedskis for the top honours. The tragic thing is, she says, is that she and her colleagues have produced tremendous talents “against all the odds”. For, while the Scottish executive plans to spend £30m on football to make it competitive again on the world stage, funding for tennis has been slashed by 60%.
