Roundabout 20190506.Pub A BIMONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE MayMay----JuneJune 2019 VANCOUVER Volume 24, Number 3 COAST BRANCH oecc.ca/vcb OF THE OLD ENGLISH CAR CLUB OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Photo by Candace Brown Message from the Chair … Alan Inglis, VCB Chairman With summer underway, there have been a host of fabulous car events, with more on the way. Certainly there is no shortage of things to do and see. Since the last Roundabout, there was the ABFM at Vandusen and, again, this was a very successful event with some of our club members winning awards, lots of attention at our booth, and a great day for all involved in and interested in British cars. A big thank you to Walter Reynolds and Gerry Parkinson for tak- ing care of the tent, table and chairs, and ensuring they would be available at the next event….. Which was the VCB British Invasion, Douglas Park, Langley City. And what a great event that has become. The weather was wonderful and 48 cars deco- rated the park while the People’s Choice Award showed 350 people submitted a ballot – a sure indication of the general appeal of the event. Organisers Gerry Parkinson, Tom Popovich and Alan Miles with, of course, May Lou Miles, de- serve a great big vote of thanks and appreciation for their very successful ef- forts. The June 4 Tuesday meeting saw some club members head over to the north shore for an A & W cruise night. On Sunday June 9, Walter Reynolds held the “Summer” Fort Langley run, and a great time was had by all. As you may know, your VCB is hosting the Club AGM in 2020. With this in mind, June 21-23 saw 4 VCB mem- bers with partners head off to Kamloops for the Club AGM. John and Lorna Hoare and Alan and Mary Lou Miles drive their British cars while Tom Popovich and Hedy Taldo and Maureen and I drove our moderns. On arrival we met with fellow club members from the South Island, Central Island and of course Thompson Valley branch, our hosts, and a variety of cars (Sunbeam Alpine, TR8, 2 TR6, 2 E-Types, or is that XKE, 1 XK8, an Austin-Healey, MGA and a Triumph Stag). The format of these events sees us gathering on Friday night for a Noggin and Nat- Mini-Monte stop for strawberries and cream MAY-JUNE 2019 THE ROUNDABOUT PAGE 2 Start of Sunday run ter over dinner. Saturday am is free time but seemed to involve ice-cream for everyone, while the AGM takes place in the early afternoon. Branch President, Stephen Way, ran a very efficient 40 minute meeting and then we could head out on the mini-monte which is a form of treasure hunt rally and this year involved strawberries and cream at a local farm! The evening dinner was a little more formal, buffet style, with awards for almost everyone. VCB did very well col- lecting door prizes. A list of awards appear elsewhere is this Roundabout, but special mention must be made for our branch member, Lorna Hoare, who received the Oxo Cup. The cup is awarded annually to a member who has made a significant contribution to the Society as a whole. Lorna has made a significant contribution over many years and thoroughly deserves this recognition. Sunday morning, the drivers formed up for a very scenic run along Highways 5A and 8 which brought us to Spences Bridge and part way back to Vancouver and/or the ferries. I mention all the details of an AGM because your branch, VCB is hosting the next one – OECC AGM 2020! Run finish at Spences Bridge MAY-JUNE 2019 THE ROUNDABOUT PAGE 3 Up coming events include the Newby collection of British vehicles and military vehicles in Aldergrove on July 6 and the Stewart Farm Picnic on Tuesday evening, August 6. Watch out for other events almost every week-end as well. On a personal note, regarding my own very small fleet of vehicles, I have resisted the urge to acquire/collect a Jaguar XJ12 and I have sold an Italian motorcycle but a Range Rover Classic has popped up to the top of my list of must-have. Fortunately, good ones are hard to find! In the meantime I have been giving my Elan some attention and I might even risk writing that it seems to be going quite well! I look forward to seeing at events in the coming weeks. Half-price burgers and free root beer were the discounts from the res- taurant. The social occurred on Tuesday, June 4th and was attended by 10 members, 9 of whom battled traffic to get on to the North Shore. In other words, only one North Shore member attended. There was no set agenda for the evening it was, after all, a social. The lack of an agenda didn’t re- strict the variety of conversations and discussions that were experienced. Eventually with food consumed and conversation on the wane it was decided that our respective homes beckoned and the social broke up. We all thanked A&W for their hospitality, disposed of our garbage and va- cated the parking lot for points south (except for the lone North Vancouver member). Remembering Robert Brodie (SIB) By Steve Hutchens Obituary from the Victoria Times Colonist (May 31, 2019) BRODIE, Robert November 28, 1949 - May 14, 2019 Robert was born Greenock, Scotland; immigrating to Victoria in 1973. Survived by his wife Elaine, daughter Erin and son Alan and in Scotland his brother Ian. Celebration of life to take place at the Esquimalt Chief and Petty Officer's Mess, 1575 Lyall Street, Victoria at 1100am on Friday, June 14, 2019. On May 16 I received this email from Pat Sparks about Robert Brodie: Don't know if you already heard, but Rob passed away Tuesday, May 14th. We have lost another good member who has done a tremendous amount for the Club as a whole, never mind the SIB and the CIB. In a follow-up call, Pat told me that Rob was diagnosed with brain cancer somewhat over a year ago. Many of us in the VCB knew Rob from Brits 'Round BC and other OECC events. We met Rob and Elaine at the first BRBC planning meeting at Derrick and Pat Sparks' home in Victoria, probably in the fall of 2004, when Celia and I represented the VCB because Les Hetherington was ill. Rob was involved the success of BRBC and served as the Wagonmaster for BRBC 2010. I'll always remember Rob's cheerful and helpful presence on BRBC. My most recent memory is perhaps the tour he put together from Victoria to Nanaimo for the AGM a couple of years ago. It was a masterful combination of a scenic route supported by fascinating history made all the more interesting with historic notes in the directions. Rob was a first class guy and will truly be missed. • The Jensen Interceptor: Chrysler-Powered British Luxury
The Jensen Interceptor: Chrysler- Powered British Luxury Allan and Richard Jensen's auto business was started before World War II, which interrupted production until 1950, when their first Interceptor was made. At the time, they made Austin bodies under contract, and the first Interceptor resembled an Austin A40 (the Jensens built bodies for a string of cars that included the Volvo P1800, Sunbeam Tiger, and Austin-Healey.) The first Interceptor used a 4 liter Austin in-line six, and was produced in small numbers for over a decade. Jensen also used Nash Twin-Ignition Eight engines for a time, and the 1962 C-V8 used a Chrysler 361 B-block engine. A number of these early Jensens made their way to the US before and after World War II. The next version kept the basic C-V8 chassis, but changed styling. Initially, an in-house convertible design was planned, but chief engineer Kevin Beattie argued for an Italian flavor. Proposals were taken from different design houses, with Carozzeria Touring winning out with a fastback coupe incorporating a rounded tail, but that house was unable to finalize the design. Vignale, instead, provided prototype and initial production bodies, rendered in steel, on CV-8 chassis sent to them by Jensen. Turnaround was quick - about four months - so the new Interceptors could be shown in London in October 1966. Jensen later used the jigs and tools, which were sent by Vignale to the West Bromwich factory. The body had two doors, a low beltline, and fishbowl rear glass in a handsome 2+2 design.

  • Luton Motor Town
Contents Luton: Motor Town Luton: Motor Town 1910 - 2000 The resources in this pack focus on the major changes in the town during the 20th century. For the majority of the period Luton was a prosperous, optimistic town that encouraged forward-looking local planning and policy. The Straw Hat Boom Town, seeing problems ahead in its dependence on a single industry, worked hard to attract and develop new industries. In doing so it fuelled a growth that changed the town forever. However Luton became almost as dependant on the motor industry as it had been on the hat industry. The aim of this pack is to provide a core of resources that will help pupils studying local history at KS2 and 3 form a picture of Luton at this time. The primary evidence included in this pack may photocopied for educational use. If you wish to reproduce any part of this park for any other purpose then you should first contact Luton Museum Service for permission. Please remember these sheets are for educational use only. Normal copyright protection applies. Contents 1: Teachers’ Notes Suggestions for using these resources Bibliography 2: The Town and its buildings 20th Century Descriptions A collection of references to the town from a variety of sources. They illustrate how the town has been viewed by others during this period. Luton Council on Luton The following are quotes from the Year Book and Official Guides produced by Luton Council over the years. They offer an idea of how the Luton Council saw the town it was running.
