DIRECTOR LOUIS LETERRIER TRIES TO CAPTURE AUDIENCES WITH THE ART OF MAGIC IN NOW YOU SEE ME.

There’s a certain similarity between the art of magic and movies: graphics and a brief fight scene, it’s a feast for the eyes. How do they do it? behind, and getting increasingly frustrated. Who is behind their act? What motivates them? All questions straight- I couldn’t help but walk out of the cinema with a smile on my face. Why? laced, no-nonsense FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) wants to As a lover of illusion and not a particularly convincing skeptic, the know. screen time to the Four Horsemen’s shows was without a doubt the most Director Louis Leterrier’s track record isn’t a good one – The Incredible entertaining aspect. JONAH LOMU RUGBY CHALLENGE NOW AVAILABLE ON PC Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge 2, as released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in June, is now available for PC via the digital download service Steam. Priced at US$69.95 (around $89), the title requires a minimum of a 2.2GHz Dual-core intel CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8800 / Radeon HD 3850. Developed by Wellington-based Sidhe, Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge is also known as All Blacks Rugby Challenge 2, and is the sequel to their 2011 release, All Blacks Rugby Challenge. The first game was generally well received, with critics stating that “there is depth behind its flashy veneer” and “it embraces different playing styles, and rewards learning the skills associated with each.”

The sequel, while regarded by most as an improvement, is also generally considered to be less of a step forward than the apparent two-year development timeline might have otherwise suggested.

INTERVIEW: AARON FORSYTHE ON MAGIC: THE GATHERING

Aaron Forsythe, the Senior Director of Magic: The Gathering Research & Development, was recently in Australia for the PAX expo in Melbourne. We were lucky enough to catch up with the man behind the many and varied aspects of Magic, and we took the opportunity to quiz him about the franchise.

Started in 1993, the collectable card game itself has never been more popular. “Magic is doing incredibly well,” Aaron explained, “even though it is a 20 year old game at this point, it is doing the best it ever has - we have more players now than ever before. Magic in Australia is at highest point ever as well.”

If you’re not familiar with it, the idea is simple enough; each player needs to figure out ways to strategically use the cards in their hand to defeat their opponent. There’s luck involved, too, of course, and modern technology lets you play it on computers, phones, and tablets if the idea of buying lots of physical ALL XBOX ONE SYSTEMS CAN BE cards doesn’t appeal. While it does allow you to play the full Magic: The Gathering game, you can’t purchase more cards for it; the title Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten has made a dramatic statement eschews the modern “free to play” technique of charging players for additional about the upcoming Xbox One’s policies around independent (“indie”) content by way of in-app purchases. development. In addition to confirming that developers will be able to self- publish on the console, something that wasn’t possible with the Xbox 360, “Duels has been - and will continue to be, for the short term - an on-ramp,” Whitten also suggested that special “dev kit” devices will not be required either. Forsythe explained. “It’s a way to learn the rules, it’s a way to learn the terminology - what the different cards do, how the game functions. Then, ideally, “Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” Whitten said. “That every you’re going to wander into a store and join the community there.” Xbox One can be used for development.
