2010 Grand Democrats ~ Membership Form The Grand Democrat Spring 2010 The Grand Democrat From the President: For the Grand Democrats, it's been a good year. The Surprise Club is alive and kicking. A new club has been begun in the Arrowhead area. We have almost all our Precinct President: Larry Levinson committeeman slots filled.     v Former Members of the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors Submitted a Notice of Intent to Sue the Navajo Nation Seeking Relief from a Contempt Finding During the Course of the Recent Presidential Election Window Rock, Arizona -- On August 6, 2015, the former members of the Navajo Nation Board of Election Supervisors (“NBOES”) -- Norman Begay, Harry Brown, Sr. Wallace Charley, Michael Coan, LeNora Fulton, Fran George, Jonathan Tso, Ruth Watson, and Tom White, Jr. -- submitted a Notice of Intent to Sue the Navajo Nation. The Notice is a precursor to bringing claims against the Navajo Nation and its officials. The former NBOES members intend to bring claims against the Navajo Nation for violations of their civil rights, when they were stripped of their positions NBOES members, held in contempt, and precluded from holding elected office in the Navajo Nation just days before the disputed November 4, 2014 election that they were elected to oversee. The motion seeking a contempt finding was filed by the same two individuals -- Dale Tsosie and Hank Whitethorne -- who successfully brought suit to prevent Chris Deschene from running for President of the Navajo Nation in November 2014 due to his lack of fluency in the Navajo language. Without taking any evidence or testimony, the Navajo Supreme Court found all the former board members in contempt for failing to timely comply with its order to postpone the election and remove Chris Deschene from the ballot. However, in recognition that there was neither the legal authority nor the funds to postpone the election, it went forward as scheduled but the contempt finding was not withdrawn.

"The Cartwrights were there on horseback," he said. "I thought it was pretty neat that these guys that you'd seen on TV — Ben and Little Joe and Adam and Hoss — were right there in front of us." The fictional Cartwrights of "Bonanza" fame — including Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker — were the grand marshals of the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's 100th birthday. Kane, then 12 years old, was a member of the Paiute Prayer Dancers — a small band of youngsters from the Reno-Sparks and Pyramid Lake Indian Colonies, who danced at powwows and special events throughout Northern Nevada. They also opened for some of the country stars performing at John Ascuaga's Nugget that year. He remembers the elders from Nevada's Paiute tribes, including chiefs Billy Williams, Harry Winnemucca and Paul Wright, sharing their knowledge with him and his fellow dancers. Now a half century later, Kane is still dancing — and still paying homage to his Native American traditions.

Maps and photos of the subject property are attached. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that rezoning request Z-32-20-6 be approved. BACKGROUND In April of 2020, the City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office received a request from Douglas and Kate Thoene, owners of 333 West Gardenia Drive, for HP overlay zoning for the property. At the Thoenes’ request, the HP Commission voted to initiate HP zoning for the subject property on May 18, 2020. BACKGROUND HISTORY Ozell Trask was born to Isaac and Nina Trask in Wakita, Oklahoma in 1909. He received an A.B. from Washburn College in Kansas in 1931 and an LLB from Harvard Law School in 1934. He initially practiced law in Kansas City before moving to Arizona in 1936 seeking health benefits from the arid climate as he was suffering from tuberculosis. He met his wife Barbara Draper in a sanitarium in Tucson and the couple married in 1939 (Arizona Daily Star Oct. 3, 1939:14). The couple moved to Phoenix and Trask was admitted the state bar of Arizona in 1940 (Arizona Republic Mar. 7, 1940:3). Trask practiced independently before establishing a law firm with Irving Jennings, Charles Strouss, and Riney Salmon in Phoenix in 1942. Originally known as Jennings, Strouss, Salmon and Trask, the firm continues to operate today as Jennings Strouss (Arizona Republic Jun 22, 1969:53).

I was going to mention that you're a native of Arizona. BA: Right. ZL: And would you tell where you were born? BA: Well, I'm not exactly sure where I was born, but I think I was born in Clifton because my birth certificate is dated Clifton, but my folks were living on the Blue River at the time above Clifton but I think my mother came in to Clifton to have a baby because her health wasn't too good. ZL: And she was probably isolated. BA: Very isolated. The only way you could get into Clifton was by horseback. ZL: Now were they on a ranch? BA: They were on a ranch yes, up on the Blue.
