- 7 - The Spreckels Organ Society welcomes you to our 27th annual Summer International Organ Festival. This year’s wonderful selection of or- ganists from near and far was carefully selected by our Artistic Director and Civic Organist, Dr. Carol Williams, and the dedicated volunteers of our Program Committee. This booklet is your guide to the summer concerts, complete with the individual program details and artists’ biographies. Don’t lose it. You’ll want to bring it with you for every concert. The Summer International Organ Festival is presented to the public without admission charge, consistent with the vision of donors John and Adolph Spreckels. The Spreckels Organ Society is delighted to make this possible. But the festival is obviously not cost-free. The many generous members of our organiza- tion contribute their annual dues, their special donations, their ardy time volunteering, and their great enthusiasm for this San Diego

H treasure at the heart of Balboa Park. If you have not yet joined the Spreckels Organ Society, please consider doing so while you at- tend one of the concerts this summer. A membership desk, staffed by volunteers, will be waiting for your visit. eor g e In order to showcase some of the finest organists performing

G today, our very generous patrons make major gifts. You, too, can be such a patron for next year’s Centennial Year festival. Drop us a note or email and we’ll follow up; or talk to me, or to one of the trustees, at a concert. All of us at the Spreckels Organ Society are excited about the Centennial Celebration. On Dec. 31, 2014, the Spreckels Organ turns 100 years old, and we’re going to have an amazing concert and celebration that night: a bagpipe-led procession into the pa- vilion, a dedication of new pipes, specially commissioned pieces, massed choirs singing the Hallelujah Chorus, fireworks, and more. Mark your calendar and be sure to bring family and friends to this free once-in-a-lifetime occasion. To help defray the costs of the Centennial Celebration, among other things, we are going to have a terrific fundraising dinner, concert and silent movie on Oct. 31 -- Halloween evening! Be sure to be here for that. There will be a variety of giving opportu- nities -- all dedicated to programming during the Centennial Year of 2015. We look forward to your participation!

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Meanwhile, I hope you and your friends and family enjoy every one of the ten concerts this summer. We are delighted you are here.

Together, we make a difference.

George Hardy

- 8 - It is my great joy to once again welcome you to another exciting year of beautiful music under the stars in Balboa Park! Almost 100 years ago, John D. Spreckels gave this wondrous instrument to the City of San Diego. He stated it was “for the free use, benefit and enjoyment of the people of San Diego... to them and to the people of all the world.” I believe if he were here today, he would say, “This has exceeded my wildest expectations!” The 2014 Summer International Organ festival features a talented line-up of award-winning artists and inspirational singers known v enson around the world. E Won’t you consider becoming a member of the Spreck- els Organ Society tonight? We also have sweatshirts, t -shirts, CD’s and much more to help you remember your i v ian time with us. V May you have a wonderful time enjoying this year’s CHAIR’S LETTER stellar festival. Let others know what a unique joy these concerts can be. Please return soon!

- 22 - A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Kimberly Marshall began her organ studies with John Mueller at the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1974. Her early interest in French music took her to France where she worked with Louis Robilliard (1978-79) and Xavier Darasse (1980-81) before returning to North Carolina to complete her undergraduate studies with Fenner Douglass in 1982. Kimberly received a full scholarship from the British government to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oxford (1982-86). In 1998, Kimberly was appointed Associate Professor of Music at Arizona State University. She was promoted to an endowed position as Full Professor in 2002 and served as Director of the School of Music from 2006-2012. Kimberly is an active member of the American Guild of Organists, having served as a member of the Committee on Professional Education (COPE) for seven years (2006-2013). She has been a recitalist and workshop leader during eight National Conventions: Dallas, 1994; New York, 1996; Denver; 1998; Seattle 2000, Denver 2002; Los Angeles 2004; Minneapolis, 2008; Washington 2010; Boston, 2014.) A review of her performance for the convention in July 2010 extolled her as “a multi-faceted musician” who “pushed the organ to its limit with her virtuosic demands in playing and registration….This was a royal performance by one of our royalty!”

Donald MacKenzie was born in Ayrshire (Scotland) in 1970. In July 1992 he began his long association with the world famous Odeon Leicester Square Compton Organ by playing it for film events. In October 1993 he was engaged to play the organ for five weeks before each performance of the Disney film ‘Aladdin.’ Since then he has appeared regularly at film premieres, special events and organ concerts. When he is not playing for concerts Donald spe- cialises in the art of improvised accompaniments to silent films. These have been acclaimed by the critics, and the audiences absolutely love the experience of Donald’s accompaniment to a film. A highlight of Donald’s 2009 concert season was an appearance at the 70th Anniversary Concert for Blackpool Opera House where he accompanied the 1925 silent classic film ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’ Highlights of Donald’s 2012 concerts included a capacity house at the Usher Hall cheering Donald’s accom- paniment to ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ and him playing at The Royal Film Performance in the presence of The Duke of Cambridge. 2014 will see Donald’s debut appearance at the Chelmsford Cathedral - in addi- tion to returning to many venues in the UK and Germany for one of his celebrat- ed accompaniments to a classic silent film or a concert of popular music played in his inimitable style. The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra is a 19-piece ensemble, playing wide variety of Big Band Swing and other music for ballroom dancing. With a repertoire approaching 500 numbers, the Orchestra takes its name from the theme song of Glenn Miller’s orchestra, among the most famous of the Big Band era. The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra had its origins in the Chula Vista Community Band, which formed in July, 1996 with a group of 7 to 14 musicians, led by Maridia Harrington until 2004, and since that time by Bob Tutelman. Of- fering playing spots for as many as 40 musicians, the Orchestra has since 2012 been organized as The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra foundation, a 501(c)3 group dedicated to preserving and performing the unique art form of American Big Band music. - 23 - August 18 SILENT MOVIE NIGHT WITH DONALD MacKENZIE

(1927) - Starring - Monty Banks DirectedChasing by Clarence Choos Brown. Choos Based on the novel “Dubrovsky” by Alexander Pushkin, the Heiress Virginia Craig is in love with Monty, a working man. The men who are managing Virginia’s affairs are determined to break up the relationship, out of fear that they will lose control of her estate when she comes of age. As part of their plan, they hire a gang of thugs to stage an assault on Virginia, and then blame it on Monty. Virginia refuses to believe the accusation, and she turns to Monty for protection, leading to a chaotic and hazardous chase.

(1920) - Starring - Buster Keaton One The story Week involves two newlyweds, Keaton and Sybil Seely, who receive a build- it-yourself house as a wedding gift. The house can be built, supposedly, in “one week”. A rejected suitor secretly re-numbers packing crates. The movie recounts Keaton’s struggle to assemble the house according to this new “arrangement.” As if this were not enough, Keaton finds he has built his house on the wrong site and has to move it. The movie reaches its tense climax when the house becomes stuck on railroad tracks. Keaton and Seely try to move it out the way of an oncom- ing train, which eventually passes on the neighboring track. As the couple look relieved, the house is immediately struck and demolished by another train coming the other way. Keaton stares at the scene, places a ‘For Sale’ sign with the heap (attaching the building instructions) and walks off with Seely. The New York Times movie review said, “‘One Week,’ a Buster Keaton work, has more fun in it than most slap-stick, trick-property comedies.”

In 2001, British born Carol Williams was the first woman to be ap- pointed Civic Organist. She graduated with top honors from London’s Royal Academy of Music and continued her education in France. Subsequent studies were at Yale University, and she earned her Doctorate of Music at the Manhat- tan School of Music in New York City. Her concerts continue to take her places such as China, Europe, Russia, and the Far East, as well as throughout the USA. Dr. Williams is the Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society, helping create the International Summer Organ Festival. Together with her husband, Kerry Bell, she has created a series of DVD tours that highlight major organs of the world. Copies of the “Tour Bus” series are available for sale at concerts. For more info, Google: Carol Williams. - 25 - 2015 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

The Spreckels Organ will turn 100 on New Year’s Eve, and to mark the occasion a Centennial Concert will be held, starting with a Grand Processional March into the Pavilion led by more than 50 Scottish pipers and heralded with brass fanfare from the parapets. San Diego Civic Organist Dr. Carol Williams has assembled an ex- citing program that includes new compositions for the or- gan, a 200-voice chorus, and more. The premiere of new organ features is another thrilling part of the evening program that will include VIP dedica- tions and echoes of the original dedication event that launched the glorious 1915 Panama-California Exposition. This massive collaborative celebration is the beginning of a year- long concert series that will bring regular guest performances at the Sunday concerts and a Summer Festival that will offer new com- missioned works plus a celebration of the musical excellence that has been the hallmark of the organ’s 100-year history of making music. Among the guest performances of 2015 will be • an “Auto Parts Band” symphony produced by the San Diego Automotive Museum • an all-day Choral Marathon set for Saturday, March 21, 2015

More Centennial events will be announced online and in the mem- bership quarterly StopTab.

Share the excitement of Balboa Park’s Centennial year by purchas- ing an ad in the December 31 Centennial Souvenir Program -- join the Grand Processional March or be part of the 200-voice chorus. Ask at the Gift Shop or Membership Table for details. - 26 - So far, more than $132,000 has been con- tributed to the Drive to 5,000 pipes -- the campaign to make the Spreckels organ once more the world’s largest outdoor organ.

Three new ranks have been funded: the Centennial Tuba, Gamba, and Gamba Celeste -- along with specialty items including the Glockenspiel, Xy- lophone, new cymbals, and a handful of percussion effects including a triangle, , tambourine, and even a train whistle and klaxon.

Less than $5000 remains to complete this stage of fundraising, and these ranks and features will be ready for installation later this year and unveiling at the December 31 Centennial Concert. The final stages of the Drive to 5,000 consist of four ranks: 8’ Geigen Celeste 4’ Violina Celeste (These will add richness and shimmer to the string sounds on the Choir manual.) 8’ Solo Vox Humana 8’ Crommorne (These are distinctive new voices for the Solo manual.) The cost of these ranks is approximately $87,000, a fundraising goal that the Organ Society will actively work to meet during the 2015 Centennial Year. More than 130 individuals and families have made contributions to this exciting expansion of the Spreckels Organ, in- cluding the following major funders: • Vivian Evenson • Dwight Gordon • Robert Palmer • The Parker Foundation • The Ryan Family Foundation

Special thanks also to Las Patronas, which has given approximately $20,000 to renew the facade of pipes that is the most visible element of organ concerts. The shiny new pipes will be unveiled at the De- cember 31 Centennial Concert - don’t miss it!
