Species Identification - Cockroaches of Florida 1 A Dichotomous Key for the Identification of the Cockroach fauna (Insecta: Blattaria) of Florida Insect Classification Exercise Department of Entomology and Nematology University of Florida, Gainesville 32611 Abstract: Students used available literature and specimens to produce a dichotomous key to species of cockroaches recorded from Florida. This exercise introduced students to techniques used in studying a group of insects, in this case Blattaria, to produce a regional species key. Producing a guide to a group of insects as a class exercise has proven useful both as a teaching tool and as a method to generate information for the public. Identification of cockroaches is limited here to adults. A major source of confusion is the recogni- tion of adults from nymphs (Figs. 1, 2). There are subjective differences, as well as morphological differences. Immature cockroaches are known as nymphs. Nymphs closely resemble adults except nymphs are generally smaller and lack wings and genital openings or copulatory appendages at the tip of their abdomen. Many species, however, have wingless adult females. Nymphs of these may be recognized by their shorter, relatively broad cerci and lack of external genitalia. Male cockroaches possess styli in addition to paired cerci. Styli arise from the subgenital plate and are generally con- spicuous, but may also be reduced in some species. Styli are absent in adult females and nymphs. -
Geographical Variation in the Tropical Cave Cockroach Paratemnopteryx

David Paul Slaney and Philip Weinstein * SUMMARY Observations of cave dwelling organisms in both tropical and temperate caves often re- veal morphological modifications, which may reflect various stages of adaptation to cave life. From April 1994 to June 1995 a number of adult Paratemnopteryx stonei were collected from 7 caves in tropical North Queensland to investigate the degree of geographical variation in such troglomorphies betwen cave populations. Results of morphometric analyses showed the occurence of a morphological discontinuity between cave populations from the different geographic regions. The body dimensions particularly important in discriminating between each cave population were tegmen length (both sexes), and secondly, tegmen width and tarsus length for males and females respectively. Morphological differences between populations are discussed in relation to stages of adaptation to cave live. INTRODUCTION Cave organisms often demostrate degrees of morphological modifica- tion (troglomorphy), for example, reduced or lost eyes, wings and bodily pigmentation, and attenuation of appendages (Christiansen, 1961; Barr, 1968; Culver, 1982; Kane and Richardson, 1985). These troglomorphic characters may reflect various stages of adaptation to cave habitats, induced through different regimes of selective pressures, and or genetic factors such as the accumulation of neutral mutations (Poulson, 1985; Wilkens, 1992; Culver et al., 1994). The highest morphological modification occurs in those populations which have been isolated (ie subject to no gene flow) the longest, have experienced stronger selective pressures, or have a greater fixation rate of genetic mutations within a population. -

The genus differs from Nocticola BolIvar in the male having a sex gland on the metanotum, which is unique among cockroaches. Robshelfordia fraserensis sp. nov., Parasigmoidella atypicalis sp. nov., Parasigmoidella mayriverana sp. novo (Blattellidae), and Molytria vegranda sp. novo (Blaberidae) are described. STUDIES ON THE FAUNA OF SURINAME AND OTHER GUYANAS: No. 4. The Blattidae of Surinam by C.F.A. Bruijning (Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden) In the fair of earliest papers on neotropical Blattidae a number from Surinam specimens were recorded (LINNAEUS, DE GEER ¹), DE SAUSSURE, BRUNNER). But in the period from the beginning of this century up to now only a few scattered reports of Blattidae from that region have appeared in the literature of the subject. The present article will be the first to deal exclusively with Surinam species. The material dealt with in this secured paper was mainly by DR. D. C. GEIJSKES between 1938and 1955. His extensive travels bothin the coastal area and far into the interior of Surinam enabled him to collect all over the country. A — large and important part of his material was collected in collaboration with Drs. P. CREUTZBERG —• during the "Suriname- Expeditie" (1948-1949), initiated by the "Foundation for Scientific Reseach in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles". Five regions in and coastal of the savannah area were explored: (/) a track 21 miles from Mungo Tapu (Moengotapoe) to the coast near the Wia Wia bank, in which numerous swamps had to be crossed; in (2) a coastal area Coronie; (3) a savannah near the Tibiti River and Zan- (tributary of the Coppename River); a savannah near derij II. The last journey (4) included the lower Marowijne River and the Nassau Mountains. In of Surinam is figure 1 a map given, showing localities and expedition routes where material studied in the present paper was collected. -

Cockroach characterization is important for identification, while data of Indonesian cockroach visual characters is rare. This study aims to provide information regarding Pycnoscelus cockroaches through character visualization of local household cockroaches in Surabaya. This study was an observational study of cockroaches in the urban organic waste processing plant in Surabaya. Cockroach specimens were obtained by Berlese Funnel extraction method from garbage samples. Character visualization was done using a camera in a mini studio. Morphological characters observed were the body, legs, antennae and mouth. Information provided by this report can complement the availability of basic data on the diversity of Indonesian cockroaches. Generalities on the suborder are presented and the species present in Colombia are catalogued. This study was made based on the literature and analysis of the various Colombian collections. The species listing obtained is made up of four families with 15 subfamilies, 62 genera and 133 species that account for 3.1% of the 4,330 species recognized worldwide. Moreover, an altitudinal range is given as well as distribution data for Colombia’s biogeographical regions and departments.
