    “In Season or Out” 2 Timothy 4:1-5 Rev. Clinton G. Roberts--First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest--January 31, 2021 If you had only one remaining opportunity to offer counsel and encouragement to someone dear to you, someone you’ve tried to guide and mentor over the years—what would you choose to say? Our text from 2 Timothy presents us with just such a moment, between Paul and his protégé Timotheus, whose name means, “God-honoring.” In this epistle, which may contain the very last written words from the apostle, we find Paul in Rome, where he has been under house arrest for probably a couple of years. He was in Rome because, as a Roman citizen, he was entitled to be tried before Caesar, which he had asked Festus, the magistrate in Caesarea, to allow. While awaiting trial, many of his friends and companions were able to visit him, including Demas and Crescens and Linus and Claudia and others from the Christian house churches in Rome. But now things had gotten worse. At his first defense before the Imperial magistrate, Paul had to go it alone. He was spared from being put to a horrible death in the Coliseum by lions, perhaps because he was in fact a citizen, a privileged status within the Roman Empire in the 1st Century. But now we find Paul in chains, probably within the sprawling encampment of the Praetorian Guard, just outside the City. Only Luke the Physician remains at his side. The season is probably late summer, and the time? Sometime after the Great Fire in AD 64 and the death of Nero in AD 68.

    The Rock That Makes the Ripple 2 Timothy 1:5 May 9, 2021 Steve DeWitt Next Sunday is our last message in our series in Romans. We are going to wrap it all up and put a bow on it. As is clear, today is Mother’s Day. I want to talk about mothers, and really parents and grandparents, and a biblical concept I’m calling “Ripple.” Ripple as in waves that ripple out. The study of waves is a big category of science: Sound waves, light waves, water, air. Perhaps you’ve heard of the butterfly effect. It is a theory about the long-term effect of something small that can become something big—like the motion of butterfly wings in one part of the world sets in motion air waves that become something much greater, like a tornado or a hurricane in another part of the world. That’s debatable but conceptually and spiritually, it is a powerful truth. That’s my point today—the impact of a godly mother is a spiritual ripple whose effect is generational. It spreads and influences far beyond the immediate sphere of that mother and the tenure of her life. That’s my point and my encouragement to mothers and fathers and grandmothers and grandfathers: don’t underestimate the impact of your faith and your life’s example in your family tree.     1 HANNAH, EUNICE & LOIS: THE VALUE OF A GODLY HERITAGE 1 SAMUEL 1, 2:18-21; 2 TIMOTHY 1:5 Passing along a godly heritage to our kids or grandkids means, among other things, taking advantage of teachable moments. Like the time two-year-old, Kylee, was visiting her grandparents. She was sitting at the kitchen table eating her lunch. Her grandmother joined her, closed her eyes, and bowed her head to say a silent prayer for her food. Little Kylee watched inquisitively. As her grandmother raised her head and opened her eyes, Kylee asked, “Nana, did you have a nice nap?” A teachable moment, yes? Passing along a godly heritage involves taking advantage of thousands of moments just like that one to send a consistent message to those who follow us generationally. There is a God. He matters so very much. He loves us. And we can have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus. Let’s think today about the value of a godly heritage. Having one ourselves. Passing one on to our kids and grandkids. We’re considering the Bible’s one hit wonders! It’s full of so many different people. Some are major characters: Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, and above all, Jesus. But most of them are minor, obscure characters. Despite their obscurity, they have something to teach us about God, about life, and about what it means to follow Jesus. Today, I want to focus on three women: Hannah, Eunice, and Lois. They remind us of the great value of a godly heritage passed down from parents to children.

    A STUDY OF THE TITUS 2 MANDATE 3 Abstract This thesis seeks to provide an in depth study of the Titus 2 Mandate and explain how the Mandate should be applied to our lives today. An overview of the book of Titus is given, as well as a study on Titus 2. How Titus 2 was modeled through the lives of women in the Bible, as well as how it was exemplified through women in Church history is also explained. It is important for Christian young women to understand their Biblical roles; this thesis seeks to provide clarity and a greater knowledge of what those roles are and how they should be implemented. While the Bible contains many commands that Christ gives his disciples, this study will focus on the Titus 2 mandate. The purpose of this thesis is to study the Titus 2:3-5 passage and research Biblical examples of women who have exemplified the principles found in this passage. The thesis will conclude with how women today can apply this mandate to their own lives. When we become doers of the Word and not hearers only, (James 1:22) we will see transformation in our own life and the lives of others.
