- The BEACON - 6 - Pastoral Assistants

During worship on Pentecost Sunday, five members of the congregation at the parish church were commissioned by the Rector as Pastoral Assistants. They have spent the early months of this year training, and are authorised by the Parochial Church Council to represent the church in its ministry of care within the parish. Their role will be to assist in this work largely, but not exclusively, through visiting and providing a listening ear. Whilst all Christians are called to follow Jesus' example of love and care there is a place for some to take this up as a specific role and as the team becomes established it is hoped that others may also feel called to take up this ministry.

While for us it is most often used to describe physical activity, in the Bible the word 'sport' often means a diversion, to make merry and produce mirth and so this month's Archive photograph is a perfect combination of all these meanings. Reginald Cooper was one of a group of men playing tennis for Aldiss in 1939 who, lacking rackets, improvised with frying pans. The story goes that the ball was once also replaced with a rotten, very smelly egg! The picture is a still from a Pathe News clip and was donated by Vivienne Moulton-Wynne and if you'd like to see more there's a link to the video on our website: www.fakenhamcommunityarchive.weebly.com

CORRECTION - Apologies for the mistake in last month's Beacon - the photograph was actually one of Neville Woodbine, the landlord of 's Robin Hood pub, singing with Charlie Hill in the 1960's.
