The Music Company 2019 OUR 45th YEAR 2 3 4 5 ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA The Music Company Orchestra, incor- porated in 1974, is a 60-piece volunteer community orchestra. Its members come from all walks of life and many different backgrounds. Conducted by Dr. Gerald Lanoue, the orchestra plays a wide range of light classical and pops repertoire. The MCO is dedicated to bringing the excitement of live orchestral music to audiences of all ages and economic back- grounds, and enthusiastically plays ven- ues throughout the greater Capital Re- gion, ranging from traditional concert halls to public parks, community events, schools, retirement centers and nursing homes. The MCO performs most concerts free to the public, and also offers schol- arships to music students at three capi- tal district high schools. The MCO is a not-for-profit organiza- tion . 6 Gerald Lanoue Conductor & Music Director Gerald Lanoue, bassoonist and conductor, is a Bennington, Vermont native. He performs throughout the capital region and Vermont with the Middlebury Opera, Pro Musica Orchestra, Hubbard Hall Opera Orchestra, Sage City Symphony and Funf woodwind quintet. He is the Conductor and Music Director of The Music Company Orchestra and Associate Conductor of the Sage City Symphony. After completing studies at the Crane School of Music. Dr. Lanoue received a Masters and Doctorate at the University of Southern California. He studied bassoon with the late Stephen Mayxm, former principal bassoonist of the Metropolitan Opera. Conducting studies were under the batons of Douglas Lowry, former Dean at the Eastman School of Music, and John Barnett, the former associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. -

Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] BERNARD LABADIE TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC TO CONDUCT ALL-MOZART PROGRAM Flute Concerto No. 2 with Principal Flute ROBERT LANGEVIN Exsultate, jubilate with Soprano YING FANG in Her Philharmonic Debut Symphony No. 31, Paris Symphony No. 39 December 1–3, 2016 Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct an all-Mozart program: the Flute Concerto No. 2, with Principal Flute Robert Langevin as soloist; Exsultate, jubilate with soprano Ying Fang in her Philharmonic debut; Symphony No. 31, Paris; and Symphony No. 39. The program takes place Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 2 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. The concerts open with three youthful works written when Mozart was 17, 21, and 22 years old, and close with the darker Symphony No. 39, written three years before his death. A leading specialist in the Baroque and Classical repertoire, Bernard Labadie led Mozart’s Requiem in his most recent appearance with the Philharmonic, in November 2013. The New York Times described this performance as “glowing … one of the most cohesive I have heard.” These concerts will mark Principal Flute Robert Langevin’s first of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic. Soprano Ying Fang has been acclaimed for her performances of Mozart, including her Metropolitan Opera debut in The Marriage of Figaro in September 2014, and Don Giovanni with The Juilliard School in April 2012. -

June 14, 2007 – XM, the nation’s leading satellite radio service with more than 8 million subscribers, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) announced today that XM will broadcast eight performances during the Baltimore Symphony’s 2007-2008 season on XM Classics (XM 110), one of XM’s three classical music channels. The series will debut with a live broadcast on September 27, 2007, the inaugural concert of the music directorship of Marin Alsop, the dynamic conductor who that evening will become the first female music director of a major American orchestra. This series marks the BSO’s foray into satellite radio, gaining exposure for the orchestra to a much broader national audience as it enters a new artistic chapter under Marin Alsop. Tong Chen, conductor “Masterfully presented the Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony,” described the Leipzig Time. A prizewinner of the prestigious International Malko Conducting Competition, Tong Chen has quickly established herself as one of the most promising and exciting young conductors in her generation. Ms. Chen has worked with numerous orchestras across the globe, including Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Mikkelin Kaupunginorkesteri, Besançon Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Orchestra, Orchestra St. Luke’s, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Xia Men Philharmonic, Qing Dao Symphony Orchestra, Guang Zhou Symphony Orchestra, and Shanghai Opera House, where she worked as the assistant Photo credit: Bob Plotkin conductor. 2019-2020 season’s highlight includes Tong’s debuts with New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, and Rutgers Symphony Orchestra; a return to Los Angeles Philharmonic working with Gustavo Dudamel and assisting Iván Fisher with Budapest Festival Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. This season marks her fifth anniversary as music director of Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra. As an avid advocate of education, Chen taught orchestral conducting and led the orchestra program at Copland School of Music from 2012-2018. Summer 2019 marked her second years as the director of Queens College Conductor’s workshop, founded by Maurice Peress in 2010. Additionally, Tong is a regular guest conductor at Manhattan School of Music, Montclair State University, Manners Pre- college orchestra, and All-State Youth Orchestras in New York State area, as well as a guest lecturer at Shanghai Conservatory of Music. -

Biographies Woo Chan “Chaz” Lee, student conductor Woo Chan “Chaz” Lee is a junior Music and Comparative Literature major from Seoul, South Korea. He sings with the Williams Concert and Chamber choirs and is one of this year’s student conductors. He also sings with the Williams Jazz Ensemble and has performed with Symphonic Winds in multiple capacities. He has studied voice with Brad Wells and Erin Nafziger as well as piano and organ with Ed Lawrence. Keith Kibler, bass-baritone “The bright heft and fully-focused center of a Helden-baritone,” “His aria could not have been more intense or eloquent,” “A thrillingly centered voice with heroic ring,” “The model of what a bass-baritone should be.” These are just a few of the critical accolades bass-baritone Keith Kibler has received for recent appearances. 100 Years of Extraordinary Historical Highlights from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Archives 1910s 1915 – Through a $6,000 grant from the city of Baltimore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is founded as a branch of the city’s Department of Municipal Music, making it the only major American orchestra to be fully funded as a municipal agency. 1916 – On February 11, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs its inaugural concerts to a standing- room-only crowd at The Lyric, under the direction of Music Director Gustav Strube. All three concerts comprising the first season at the Lyric are sold out. 1920s 1924 – On February 16, the BSO hosts its first children’s concert. The Baltimore Symphony youth concert series is the first to be established by an American orchestra. 1926 – The Baltimore Symphony makes its initial broadcast performance on WBAL Radio. 1930s 1930 - George Siemonn becomes the second music director of the orchestra. He conducts his opening concert, with the musicians now numbering 83, on November 23. 1935 - In late February, George Siemonn reluctantly resigns as music director and is replaced by Ernest Schelling. Forty-four musicians apply for the position. Schelling is well-known for his children’s concert series at Carnegie Hall. 1937 - Sara Feldman and Vivienne Cohn become the first women to join the Baltimore Symphony. The older members of the orchestra are supportive, but union members picket the hall with signs saying, “Unfair to Men,” which is reported in the New York Times. 1937 - Ernest Schelling becomes ill and is replaced by Werner Janssen. The dynamic young conductor and his wife, the celebrated film star Ann Harding, receive an enthusiastic response when they arrive in Baltimore.
