Graduation Program Record of Graduates Conferred January 2021 Faculty of Business and Economics GRADUATION PROGRAM RECORD OF GRADUATES CONFERRED JANUARY 2021 FACULTY OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS 2021 GRADUATION 01 02 MONASH UNIVERSITY Monash University was named after Sir John Monash (1865-1931), a distinguished engineer, lawyer and soldier who commanded the Australian forces in France in World War I. Later, as the first chairman of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, he took on the immense task of overseeing the development of the brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne from 1923 until 1931. As a scholar and a man of action he exemplified the University’s motto, Ancora Imparo, a saying attributed to Michelangelo that means “I am still learning”. The motto was adopted by the University after it was established by proclamation under an Act of the Parliament of Victoria on 30 May 1958. When teaching began at Clayton in 1961, the University consisted of the faculties of Arts, Economics and Politics, Engineering, Medicine, and Science, with an initial enrolment of 363 students. But while your time as a student at Monash may be drawing to a close, your ongoing connection with us remains no less vital. A most important strength of this University is its wider community, and the range of opportunities for you to stay in touch with that community has never been broader. For many graduates, this is an opportunity to help ensure that the experience of Monash for the next generation of students is even more rewarding than their own. This could involve contributing to support more scholarships, to extend our teaching and learning programs or to increase the impact of our research. Others donate their time and enthusiasm by participating in our student mentoring programme or by sharing their knowledge and experience with the wider Monash community. And never forget that Monash University exists for the benefit of everyone. For decades it has fulfilled that purpose by educating and training new generations of professionals and leaders in evidence-based decision making and by undertaking world class research that has proven vital to improving the human condition. It is my sincere hope that the qualification you receive today furthers your own endeavours to effect positive change in a world that faces severe challenges as well as great opportunities.     On Late-Qing Scholars’ Understanding and Responding to Western Learning Classification System through Classification System for Translation Bibliography of the Late-Qing Period On Late-Qing Scholars’ Understanding and Responding to Western Learning Classification System through Classification System for Translation Bibliography of the Late-Qing Period Chien-Yu Kuo Master Library and Information Science Fu Jen Catholic University As the introduction of Western knowledge through translations began to become more prevalent, annotated bibliographies served to promote works in translation, emerging as one of the critical means of transmission of Western learning in late-Qing China. Annotators and bibliographers of translation bibliographies were largely from among the Chinese elite cognoscenti and intelligentsia, and as they recognized that the classical Chinese quadrant cataloguing was ineffective in organizing this new knowledge, they began to devise new bibliographic cataloging taxonomies. Their ad hoc cataloguing relied on personal ontologies reflecting the annotator’s understanding of the western knowledge through taxonomic or typological categories, which were obviously quite distinct from the core of the ancient Chinese literary compendium, resulting in evolution of an intervening ad hoc cataloging system between the ancient Chinese quadrant cataloging and onset of modern western bibliographic cataloging. Thus, while classical Chinese cataloging reflected the pervasive egalitarianist characteristics of the Imperial system of examinations, in the late-Qing period, the Chinese quadrant cataloging was gradually replaced with modern western cataloging approaches, representing for scholars not only evolution of the bibliographic cataloging systems, but also eliciting the many questions posed by adaptation following integration or exposure of the quadrant of traditional Chinese learning taxonomies with western modes of knowledge (Zuo, 2004).
