Welcome to Finnish Lapland!

We are happy to invite you to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. We have planned a private program just for Soroptimists to give you a taste of the most popular Finnish winter activities. Your adventure of a lifetime begins 9 December 2018, we can’t wait to be a part of it!

Full Programme

Day 1: Sunday 9 December 2018 Night train from Tampere to Rovaniemi

You will meet one of our guides at Tampere railway station at 21.00 (9:00 pm) who will check you in for your night train to Rovaniemi. After your guide says goodbye, you will stay the night in comfortable sleeping cabins, each having a bunk bed for two people and shared toilets. You can sleep soundly while the train takes you to the capital of Lapland: Rovaniemi.

Meals included: None, a restaurant car is available on the train serving and refreshments

Day 2: Monday 10 December 2018 Arrive in Rovaniemi, city sightseeing walk and visit to Santa Claus Village

Your lead Adventure Apes guide will meet you at Rovaniemi train station in the morning at 7.00 am and take you to downtown Rovaniemi where we will begin the adventure with a gear check and enjoy a complete with wild berries, the original Finnish superfood. Lapland. Bellies full, your guide will give you a short guided walking tour around downtown Rovaniemi.

Next, we will take a bus to Santa Claus Village which is located at the Arctic Circle. You will have a chance to meet Santa Claus, send postcards from the official Santa Claus post office and do some souvenir shopping if you wish so. You will enjoy lunch on your own in one of the several restaurants at the Arctic Circle.

In the afternoon we will return to downtown Rovaniemi and check in to the hotel where you will have some time to rest. In the evening you will have dinner at a restaurant together with your guide. Your guide will also give you an introduction culture.

Day 3: Tuesday 11 December 2018 Husky Safari and visit to Arktikum Museum

After breakfast, you will have an adventure of a lifetime: a husky safari! After the transfer to the countryside, the husky trail takes you to beautiful snow covered forests, lakes and fields and you can connect with the silence of nature in a very special way. You will be driving your own husky teams in a crew of 2: one person to drive and another to enjoy the views under a warm blanket. We will enjoy lunch right after you have returned back to Rovaniemi. Afterwards, you will have some time to rest or explore this beautiful town designed by Alvar Aalto on your own.

In the afternoon, your guide will introduce you one of the most popular Finnish sports: . Our Nordic Walking tour takes us to Arktikum Museum where we will have a guided tour and you will get a deeper understanding about the life in the Arctic. After the Museum visit we will continue our walking tour. If we are lucky and the night sky is clear, we may have a chance to enjoy the dancing of the Aurora Borealis. (Please note: seeing the Aurora Borealis relies on nature, so we cannot guarantee you will see it, but we will do our best to find the best opportunities.)

The Nordic Walking tour finishes in downtown and you can freely choose the restaurant where you will have dinner on your own. Back at the hotel you can relax your muscles in the Sauna after the day of adventure.

Day 4: Wednesday 12 December 2018 Snowshoe adventure, camp lunch in the nature and visit to reindeer farm

Today we will pack our backpacks and go for an easy snowshoe tour to the top of a hill overlooking Rovaniemi. You will learn how to make a fire and cook a delicious lunch over the open fire. For we will have hot juice made by your guide from wild berries! You will also have a chance to bake your own buns on the fire and enjoy them with homemade jam made from local .

In the afternoon we will visit a reindeer farm where you will be able to meet and feed the reindeer and talk with the reindeer herders. You will also have a chance to drive the reindeer in a beautiful short tour around the forest.

In the evening you will have a farewell dinner party in a traditional Finnish restaurant together with your guide.

Day 5: Thursday 13 December 2018 Transfer to Rovaniemi Airport

Today you will have a lazy morning as you take breakfast on your own at the hotel. We will check out around 9.45 am to arrive to Rovaniemi airport around 10.00 am for your departure flight. Now it is time to say goodbye and continue your travels on your own.

Suitability

This adventure is suitable for adults and elderly people who are looking for a guided holiday in Arctic conditions and who are interested in learning about Finnish culture, , nature and easy level winter sports. There will be several beginner-level outdoor activities that will require participants to be in normal fit condition and able to walk for some kilometres in relaxed speed. This tour is not suitable for someone with reduced mobility or back problems. No previous skills or special knowledge about activities or conditions demanded. Basic understanding of English needed.

Arrival and departure points

This tour will begin from Tampere railway station where one of our guides will check you in to your night train to Rovaniemi. This tour will finish in Rovaniemi airport where you will continue your travels on your own.

The group size for this private tour is 10 people.

Special instructions

This adventure takes place in Arctic winter conditions. All the special gear (like snowshoes, outdoor gear, Nordic Walking sticks etc.) will be provided; however, adventurers will be expected to come prepared for cold weather. Adventurers who do not own their own cold-weather clothing are advised to budget an additional 50 euro for the add-on winter gear package rental which should be reserved together with the booking.

Accommodations and food

Accommodation for the first night is a sleeping cabin of a long distance train from Tampere to Rovaniemi. Each two-person cabin has bunk beds with bed linen and shared toilets located in the corridor. Shower rooms are available but they are not very luxurious so we recommend you plan to

Soroptimist International - Private Winter Adventure in Rovaniemi 6 Updated 13 July 2018 shower before boarding or after arrival in Rovaniemi. There is a restaurant car on the train where you can kick off your adventure and share a drink or snack together with your fellow travellers.

The last three nights will be spend in twin rooms in a standard hotel in downtown Rovaniemi. A large breakfast buffet and free wi-fi will be included. You will also have a chance to warm up in the Finnish sauna after a day of adventure.

As we would like to introduce you to , we have included a selection of restaurant meals where you can taste the pure, locally-sourced ingredients like lake fish, forest berries and from local bakers. On our snowshoeing, day you will get a deeper understanding of Finnish cuisine as you will be preparing a delicious soup together with your guide over the open fire out in nature.

As we all have different tastes, we have also included a few opportunities for you to explore the dining choices in Rovaniemi on your own.

Booking details

We are excited to offer you this Soroptimist exclusive tour. This tour is limited to 10 people, available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Reserve your space at www.adventureapes.fi/soroptimist2018. All bookings must be made before ​ ​ 31 August 2018. We will send you an invoice for 30% of the total cost and confirm your reservation upon receipt of payment. You will receive a final invoice for the remaining 70% which will be due 9 October 2018.

Payment of the deposit should be made within one week of receiving the invoice; the deposit is non-refundable. Invoices will be sent via email or e-invoice and they will include IBAN and SWIFT codes. Charges of the international bank transfers varies between banks and are the responsibility of the buyer.

Pricing & inclusions

The price of this adventure is 1249 euros per person. The price includes VAT and travel from Tampere to Rovaniemi, but it does not include return flights at the end of the tour from Rovaniemi to your final destination.

Please note that modifications to the program and activities are possible due to weather and/or safety reasons.

● Adventure Gear: All the special gear needed for the activities mentioned in the program (such as snowshoes, outdoor cooking gear, Nordic Walking sticks etc.) are included in the adventure price.

● Services of English speaking outdoor sports and wilderness guide who is familiar with the Arctic conditions, is qualified to lead all the activities in the program, and who has the first aid and safety training needed to run the program.

Winter gear package

You can rent a winter gear package (optional) for 50 euros. Preliminary booking is required to ensure appropriate sizes are available. The winter gear package includes the rental of:

● Thermal underlayer (trousers and shirt) ● Woolen socks ● Fleece or heavy sweater ● Winter jacket ● Winter trousers ● Winter boots ● Small hat + big hat for extra cold weather ● Gloves + mittens ● Buff

Safety of the adventure

The adventure is led by a professional wilderness and outdoor sports guide who has suitable safety training for all the activities in the program. Adventurers are requested to follow his/her instructions in all circumstances. Safety training will be given before every activity.

Travel insurance

The adventurers are requested to have an adequate travel insurance prior their arrival to Finland and are asked to send copies of their insurance policy in advance.

Photographing

If adventurers would like to have pictures of the adventure, the guide will take general group photographs at no additional cost. You will receive the pictures electronically after the tour and can use the pictures as you wish. Adventure Apes will have right to use these pictures in their marketing purposes.

Cancellation policy

Cancellations on and before 8 October 2018: 30% (this represents the non-refundable deposit) Cancellations 9 October 2018 and later: 100%
