During December of that year, she entered Caron and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. ABSTRACT In the last five years, news of various scandals in the pageant industry has inundated media outlets. These recent incidents are by no means outliers in the history of pageantry. This article ex- plores the significance of one of these controversies - the Rebekah Revels litigation, which stemmed from the disputed 2002 Miss North Carolina pageant. For context, this article first outlines allegations of wrongdoing in early pageants. It proceeds with an analysis of how the Revels liti- gation serves as an exemplar of the types of contract lawsuits that may continue to entangle pageant organizations in the future. Finally, the article provides an examination of the specific legal, economic, and sociocultural effects that the Revels litigation has had, and likely will continue to have, upon the business model of the pageant industry.

    Chapter III: Research Methodology Chapter III Research Methodology 3.0 Introductory Remarks This chapter presents the research methodology of the study. It provides general framework, data sources, data collection, and data analysis of the present study. 3.1 Aims of The Research As explained in Chapter I, the study aims to discover two problems; (1) kinds of speech act that performed in the final round of Miss Universe and (2) the self images showed by Miss Universe’s finalists. Thus, the data are examined and analyzed to answer both problems. In general, the present study is devoted to answer the statement of problems as follow: 1. What kinds of speech act did the finalists perform in the final round of Miss Universe? 2. What self images did they bring forward through their utterances? 3.2 General Framework The present study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Creswell (1998:15) defines qualitative research as an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or 49 Chapter III: Research Methodology human problem. Qualitative research focuses on specific situation or people and emphasizes on words rather than numbers (Maxwell, 1996 in Nurhasanah, 2008). Moreover, Denzin and Lincoln (1987) state that it uses natural settings to interpret phenomena by involving any methods. In this case, the methods which usually applied are interview, observation, and documents (Moleong, 2008:5). From those explanations, Moleong (2008:6) synthesizes into: Qualitative research is a research which aimed to comprehend any phenomena happened towards the research subject such as behavior, perception, motivation, actions, and etc holistically in a descriptive way in forms of words and language, in a natural specific context and using any natural method.

As Miss USA, Conner traveled the country working with various breast and ovarian cancer charities, the USO (United Service Organization), lending support to service men and women and she appeared on Lifetime’s Hit Show, “Project Runway”. Conner competed at the Miss Universe pageant in Los Angeles, where she placed 4th runner up, and made red carpet appearances at many special events. It all came crashing down in December of that year when the New York Daily News reported that Conner tested positive for cocaine. This story and others about drugs and alcohol abuse put enormous pressure on the Miss Universe organization to strip Conner of her crown. However, Donald Trump, then an owner of the Miss Universe property famously said, “I’ve always been a believer in second chances,” and Conner was not dethroned. He sent her to the Caron Treatment Center where she completed a course of treatment for substance use. Conner now represents the Caron Treatment Center as a Public Advocacy Consultant. After her very public struggle, Conner has spoken to audiences all over the United States as an advocate for those whose lives have been impacted by addiction. Conner will be the featured speaker at this year’s Merrill Scott Symposium Banquet, August 27, at 7:00pm in the Yakima Convention Center. The event is open to the public.
