In illustrating the w ide themati c and geographical range in the chapters below, this introducti on foc uses first on the definitio11 of demonolosy and witch­ huntin,~, and second on the cirrnlation of knowled,~e between the two fields of thinking with demons, and of taking action against demons (exorcism) and witches (criminal trials) . ln its third and last part, the introduction presents a short oven1iew of each of the seventeen chapters.

Sc holars have been debating th e relationship between demonology and witch­ hunting for a long time. In 1959, R ossell H ope R obbins prese nted the first Engli sh-lan guage encyclopedia of " W itchcraft and D emono logy," and es tab­ lished a firm link between dem onology, demonologists, and witch- hunts. 1 Continuing the line of argument that had originated with Andrew Dickso n White, George Lincoln Burr, and H enry C harl es Lea,2 R obbins belonged to the rati onalist sc hool of witchcraft research rs w ho foc used on the persecu­ tions of the fifteenth to th e seventeenth centuries as part of th e "history of Europea n civiliza tion, or rath er un- civilization."3 H e defin ed witchcraft as a new heresy, invented by the Inquisition, and de 111 onology as subordinated to "witchology." His often reprinted encyclopedia treated " the scientific
