Actor-Network Theory and the Production of Robert Connelly's Three Dollars O/i Mould In Hollywood, filmmaking is dominated by a number of large production studios tbat have placed increasing emphasis upon contract and freelance labor since the end of the studio era. 1 Feature film production in 1nany other countries and cities relies even more extensively on iinperinancnt self-employed freelance workers that are less integrated into the long-range business plans of the major studios/ distributors. American economist Jeremy Rifkin remarks, ((every filrn production brings together a tean1 of 1;pecialised production companies and independent contractors, each with its own expertise, along with the talent. 2 Together, these disparate parties constitute a short-lived network enterprise whose lifespan will be limited to the duration ?J'the project."3 The project-based nature of einployment in this industry is hence comprehensive, with very few large film producing firms, formulating what has been coined a "cottage econoiny. '14 Noting this mode of production, this chapter will show, through a project-based case study of Three Dollars (an Australian feature film directed by Robert Connolly) how Actor-Network Theory (ANT) can be employed to describe this project-based mode of film production that is sensitive to the freelance workers enrolled within it. The development of ANT in the social sciences literatures has offered scholars an alternative to Marxist approaches of media industry analysis. That is, ANT describes and prioritizes action of production work activities and relationships over structure of the industry's institutions and economies. -

Perlman studied law at Monash University in Melbourne, graduating in 1989. He was called to the Bar in 1997, but while working as a judge's associate in the early 1990s he started writing short stories, and won 'The Age' short story competition in 1994. In 1994 he won The Age Short Story Award for The Reasons I Won't Be Coming, a short story that later gave the title to his first collection of short stories, published in 1999. In 1998, his first novel, Three Dollars, was published. It won The Age Book of the Year and the Betty Trask Prize. His second novel, Seven Types of Ambiguity, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award, Australia's most prestigious literary award, in 2004. Perlman's third novel, The Street Sweeper, was published in 2011. In an interview in 2001 he named Graham Greene as one of the writers who inspire him, describing Greene as "a master of beautifully crisp, clean and spare prose". His work "condemns the economic rationalism that destroys the humanity of ordinary people when they are confronted with unemployment and poverty". -

Michael Christie Abstract This thesis interprets and explains changes in aspects of the Australian literary and political fields that occurred during the period sociologist Peter Beilharz has named the long Labor decade: 1983 to 1996. During this period tropes of youth, illness and mobility, and the Bildungsroman form were central to the textual embedding, via the putative modernisation of Australian Labourism, of Neoliberalism in Australian political culture. This thesis's central argument is that at its best Grunge and post-Grunge literary fiction both register and attempt to resist Neoliberal governmentality through the tropes of youth, illness and mobility, and through the Bildungsroman form. The introduction surveys the critical reception of Grunge fiction and presents the thesis' central literary-theoretical concepts which are taken from Franco Moretti and Fredric Jameson's historical sociology of literary form. -
