Summary of Activity Status and Progress a. Introduction/Summary The long-term objective of the Wildlife Conservation Society/Biological Conservation at the Landscape Scale (BCLS) Program in the Greater Yasuní-Napo area is to conserve the biodiversity of the Greater Yasuní-Napo Moist Forest Landscape Conservation Area. To accomplish this purpose, the BCLS Program is working with local ethnic groups, public and private sector stakeholders, and private volunteer organizations partners to develop a landscape strategy and to improve management of the protected areas and biological resources in adjacent and surrounding lands. These partners include CARE, EcoCiencia, Organización de la Nacionalidad Huaorani de la Amazonía Ecuatoriana (ONHAE; Huaorani Indigenous Federation), Fondo Ambiental Nacional del Ecuador (National Environmental Fund of Ecuador), and Fondo Ecuatoriano Populorum Progressio (FEPP). BCLS Program staff is working with local partners to establish baseline ecological information, provide support for monitoring and design of local- level initiatives, strengthen management of national protected areas, promote change in patterns of resource use, and craft policy initiatives to encourage conservation-compatible land uses in the region. This landscape approach is designed to determine the needs of key wildlife species, assess human subsistence and economic activities across the same landscape, and use the intersection of these to focus efforts on those areas and actions which emerge as key conservation conflicts or opportunities. -

This is true both of its societies, often envisioned as ‘lost tribes in the forest,’ and the ‘raw green hell’ of its environment.”1 In many ways, we all know the common mythical images associated with the Amazon: the region that time left behind; the place where stone-age people continue to live; the green heart and hell of South America where western civilizing missions go to die. This mythic vision is strong and reeks of colonialist obsessions with the “backward” racial Other. Antipas: A Faithful Witness, Martyred for His Faith Summer Sermon Series “God Uses People Like Me” Kenwood Baptist Church Pastor David Palmer August 6, 2017 TEXT: Revelation 2:12-17 Good morning, Kenwood. We continue this morning in our summer equipping series that looks at the body of Christ and asks the question: “How God can use people just like you and me?” My heart is full already this morning at seeing our church being used by God all week. We had over a hundred children come to soccer camp, and 70% of those children were from the community. I think that's awesome. We had non-Christian neighbors in our neighborhood come, and I think it was the first Christian event they had ever been to. I remember after the first night, the evening closed with the explicit prayer in the Name of Jesus, and I wondered if my neighbor was offended in any way, but he just reached his hand to me and said, “Thank you for inviting us.” The next day, when players from FC Cincinnati came and gave a very articulate and compelling testimony of their faith in Jesus Christ, I saw friends who didn't know Christ and all these children and parents standing there hearing the gospel presented. I believe with all my heart that they wouldn't have come here to our backfield. The fact that we were out in a public space, in an open community space, they were willing to come, and yet the gospel was presented. I thought, “I wonder what they’re thinking.” One came up to me afterwards and said, “You know, those guys were right! Jesus is looking down on us,” and I thought, “That's a great start. -

The Waodani people of the tropical rain forest along the Curaray River in a remote and mostly undeveloped the Amazonian region of Ecuador live with a traditional animist worldview. As children, Mincayani saves Dayumae after a vicious nighttime spear attack on a Waodani village by a neighboring tribe, and Dayumae's younger sister in Dayumae's care is killed in the attack. Other events of tribal life are pictured. In a conflict with her family, Dayumae—who, in part, has been blamed for the death of her sister—decides to leave the End of the Spear for her safety, and runs to the "foreigners" around her: foreigners who speak Spanish and dress very differently. Nate Saint is a missionary jungle pilot and End of the Spear mechanicliving with his family at a mission outpost where his job includes flying various missionaries and supplies into remote locations. -

The written words will come from multiple sources. Today’s sketch is written by Tmara D. Fickas. Devotion - Jim Elliot Jim Elliot was born in 1927 in Portland, Oregon. His mother, Clara, was a chiropractor and his father, Fred, was a minister. Jim knew Christ from an early age and was never afraid to speak about Him to his friends. At age six Jim told his mother, “Now, mama, the Lord Jesus can come whenever He wants. He could take our whole family because I’m saved now, and Jane is too young to know Him yet.” Jim entered Benson Polytechnic High School in 1941. He carried a small Bible with him and, an excellent speaker; he was often found speaking out for Christ. He and his friends were not afraid to step out and find adventure. One thing Jim didn’t have time for in those early years were girls. He was once quoted as telling a friend, “Domesticated males aren’t much use for adventure.” In 1945 Jim traveled to Wheaton, IL to attend Wheaton College. His main goal while there was to devote himself to God. He recognized the importance of discipline in pursuing this goal. He would start each morning with prayer and Bible study. In his journal he wrote, “None of it gets to be ‘old stuff’ for it is Christ in print, the Living Word. -

Real Life Stories Missionaries Died in Ecuador Jungle The five men on "Palm Beach," a strip of sand on the Curaray River, Ecuador, knew that there was danger. But they took the risk for a chance to make friendly contact with the Huaorani (Auca) Indians. Missionaries Ed McCulley, Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, and Roger Youderian, had landed on the makeshift airstrip in their "modern missionary mule" (a Piper Cruiser). Back at Shell Mera, on January 8, 1956, Marj Saint waited for word. The short wave radio crackled. Marj listened as her husband, Nate, told her that "a commission of ten" was on its way from Terminal City. "Looks like they'll be here for the early afternoon service. Pray for us. This is the day! We'll contact you next at four-thirty." Excitement was intense. Months of efforts were about to bear fruit! The "commission" was a group of Huaorani men. Terminal City was the code name the missionaries had given to a Huaorani village they had spotted from the air. If Nate spoke in code words, it was because he did not want Ecuadorians with guns pre-empting the mission's friendly overtures to the natives. The Huaorani were sturdy forest dwellers who had fiercely resisted all efforts to subdue them, killing many people who ventured into their territory. Nate had first spotted one of their villages from the air on September 19, 1955. On October 1st, missionaries developed a plan for making contact, when bad weather kept Johnny Keenan from flying Ed back to his home station at Arunjo.
