The NCAP uses the performance tests (objective test procedures) developed through agency research. • In 2016, NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced a voluntary agreement with 20 automakers to make Automatic Emergency Braking standard by 2022. PAEB – Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking • A research test procedure has been developed and is under agency review. The following work supported development of the test procedures: o Evaluation of Safety Benefits (work completed in 2017); o Estimation of Potential Safety Benefits for Pedestrian Crash Avoidance/Mitigation System1; and o Target Crashes and Safety Benefits Estimation Methodology for Pedestrian Crash Avoidance/Mitigation Systems.2 • The December 2015 NCAP Notice identified this technology as a potential new technology to feature in the NCAP. BSD – Blind Spot Detection • A research test procedure and research performance criteria have been developed and are under agency review.
