Cr Suzy Batkovic Division 6 Update December 2020 Cr Suzy Batkovic Division 6 Update December 2020 A Message from Suzy 2020 has been a year like no other and another challenging one for our community. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out and about throughout the division over the last eight months. I have met some Gift to Council after incredible residents and community amalgamation in 2008 Nola and Merle groups. Blankets of Love Celebrates 20 Years It is great to see so many residents who In October I had the pleasure of attending a morning tea with the ladies from are passionate about our division and I Blankets of Love to celebrate the group’s 20th anniversary. am excited to see what I can achieve over These amazing ladies make about 120 blankets a year for palliative care, dementia the coming years for you all. patients, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, in emergencies to help young children, in the neonatal and paediatric units, and many more. To donate cotton fabrics or find out more about the lovely ladies at Blankets of Love, pop by and see them every Wednesday at the Oonoonba Community Centre between 8am and 1pm. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas Townsville – here’s to a better year ahead in 2021! Keeping the Pathway Clean Suzy Little things often make a big difference. After several residents Contact me Red Bench at Council contacted me about rubbish on the chambers in Walker Street 13 48 10 | 0434 939 419 pathway in Douglas, Council installed [email protected] a new rubbish bin at the site and there Red bench to Start has been a dramatic decrease in the PO Box 1268, Townsville QLD 4810 amount of litter left on the pathway in the Conversation townsville.qld.gov.au this area. Cr Suzy Batkovic Division 6 Update Bus stop Upgrade Program Our city’s bus stops are an essential part of Townsville’s public transport system, which is why Council continues to prioritise bus stop upgrades to deliver a high-quality experience for all users. A program of work is currently underway across the city including several bus stops in Annandale and Douglas which will include construction of shade shelters and improved accessibility. This project was funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.* Tumbetin Lodge and the Palmetum Worth a Visit What a Catch! Council recently called tenders to rent one of Townsville’s most beautiful In August I met Albert Price as he tried his heritage buildings. Tumbetin Lodge was built in Railway Estate and was used luck, fishing off the dock at Riverside Gardens as the St Francis Xavier School before being relocated to the Palmetum in Community Centre. Within a minute of 1993. It is nestled in the Palmetum and Council is looking for a new tenant to throwing his line in he hooked a 6kg, 76cm make use of this unique space. barramundi. Quickest catch I have ever seen. Tumbetin Lodge is bordered by the popular Palmetum on one side and The Good Shepherd Home on the other side and I can’t wait to see which businesses consider setting up shop at this great spot. When was the last time you visited the Palmetum? This 17 hectare Botanic Garden displays one of the largest and most diverse public collections of palms in the world. It’s a hidden gem and I encourage you to bring the family down for a picnic on the lawn or a leisurely walk by the river. Find out more about the Palmetum on Council’s website. Illegal Dumping Creates a Mess Townsville residents are risking hefty fines for illegally dumping their waste across the city instead of taking their rubbish to one of five dumps across town. Unfortunately Condon seems to be a hot spot for illegal dumping. Since September last year, Council has investigated more than 300 cases of illegal dumping across the city, which has resulted in almost $50,000 in fines being handed out. Choosing between doing the right thing or getting fined is simple. The Stuart Waste Facility and Hervey Range Transfer Station are open every day of the year except Good Friday and Christmas Day. Green waste and recycling is free to drop off at the transfer stations, so there really is no excuse to not get rid of your waste responsibly. If you see illegal dumping please call Council on 13 48 10. Cr Suzy Batkovic Division 6 Update Pump Track Opens at Murray Bike riders of all ages are taking advantage of the new asphalt pump track at the Murray Sporting Complex in Annandale. The track has several features including rollers and banked turns with riders building momentum by pumping their bike up and down using their bodies instead of the pedals. Council has also increased seating and tree plantings to provide more shade. It is so great to see the kids and the young at heart using the track. This project was funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program*. Riverway Skatepark Welcome to the WNBL Teams Artwork a Winner Townsville City Council is proud to support the WNBL move to North Queensland for the 2020 In October Councillor Liam Mooney season. Townsville will host 32 of the 60 games to joined me to check out the new be played across November and December with artwork at Riverway Skate Park. Three games also being played in Cairns and Mackay. of the city’s best street artists leant a hand to help update the artwork at the skatepark. Now it’s a work of art in itself as well as being a popular spot for skaters and freestyle scooter riders. Pinnacles Gallery Reopens Pinnacles Gallery at Riverway reopened to the public in November with the TAFE exhibition MAKE. The space has been closed since it was damaged during the Monsoonal Event of 2019 and it’s great to see the gallery open again. Thanks to everyone for their patience while Council worked to get Pinnacles up and running again. To find out more about the gallery, check Council’s Jamie Banks, Out of the Box [detail] 2020 website. • New Basketball Queensland High Performance Program
New Basketball Queensland High Performance Program Since 1994, the National Intensive Training Centre Program (NITCP) has been the flagship of elite junior athletic and coach development in Queensland. The aim of the program is to develop players for selection into the AIS and National Junior Teams, (Emus & Gems) with a Vision of equipping the athletes with the skills to compete successfully in the National Basketball League, Women's National Basketball League and the Australian National Teams (Opals & Boomers) in the future. With a strong commitment to the elite holistic development of our junior athletes, the program has garnered much success. NITCP Athletes have gone on to represent various NBL & WNBL teams; AIS Programs; Junior & Senior National Representation (Incl Opals & Boomers); as well as Division 1 US Colleges. Athletes call a wide variety of associations home, including: Brisbane; Cairns; Gold Coast; Ipswich; Logan; Mackay; Maroochydore; Northside; Rockhampton; Southern Districts; South West; Toowoomba & Townsville. The NITCP also provides unique Coach Development pathways providing our Elite Junior Athlete Coaches with opportunities to progress to National League Teams and Programs. The NITCP has been instrumental at providing Queensland Coaches with the necessary professional sports program skills, to compete at the elite junior level but also catapulting them to the ranks of the NBL & WNBL as well as National Programs and Australian Junior Teams: Mick Downer (Perth Wildcats); Dale Ryan (Brisbane Bullets); Paul Goriss (AIS & Australian Under 18 Mens); Dale Waters (Dandenong Rangers); Peter Buckle (Townsville Fire); David Mitchell (Logan Thunder) & Patrick Brady, Annette Winton & Nikki Bairstow (Townsville Fire). Until the end of 2008, the NITCP was delivered on behalf of Basketball Australia by the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) in conjunction with Basketball Queensland (BQ); however, due to the QAS shift in focus to Senior Elite Sport, (Olympic & World Championship athletes) 2009 sees the delivery of the NITCP move back to BQ.

  • Lauren Jackson
LAUREN JACKSON “It has always been an athlete’s dream to be in the Olympics and now it is mine”. Lauren Jackson, age 12. The line of people awaiting the opportunity to ask for a photograph or signature runs down the length of the basketball court and disappears out the door. It is the first home game for the Canberra Capitals in October 2012. The game is well over and most Caps players and staff have departed for the change room. Lauren Jackson did not play due to injury, but it made no difference to the crowd who were just excited that she was here, and would spend the WNBL season dressed in the blue and yellow Caps jersey. It would take over an hour for those on the end of the line to reach the figure sitting behind the desk, patiently signing, offering a few words and smiling a little awkwardly for photos – she is never truly comfortable when the attention is focused entirely on her. A large number were young girls, invariably dressed in an oversized no.15 singlet, eager to meet their sporting “shero”. They may not play basketball but live in a sports-mad nation though one which rarely accords sportswomen their due. For decades Lauren Jackson has been best in the world and that cannot be ignored. Lauren Elizabeth Jackson was born on 11 May 1981 in Albury, New South Wales, to Maree and Gary. If such exist, basketball genes filled the bloodstream of the new arrival. Maree Bennie had created records of her own whilst on a basketball scholarship at Louisiana State University.i Maree played for Australia from 1973 to 1980 and the sport also introduced her to Gary, who played for Australia in 1975.

  • The Vanuatu Basketball Federation Conducted the Following Competitions/Programs in 2015
FIBA OCEANIA ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Tahiti celebrating after winning the Bronze medal at the U16 Oceania Championships Bottom: New Caledonia and Tahiti celebrate together after their Bronze Medal finals game at the U16 Oceania Championships 1 2015 was a highly productive year for the FIBA Oceania family, with three major championships, 3x3 continuing to grow and the expansion of the Hoops for Health program into new federations, along with the introduction of a new initiative in the form of a Women’s Empowerment and Leadership workshop. Significantly, the new FIBA competition structure has provided further opportunities for Oceania federations to compete on the world stage from 2017 onwards, with many federations using 2015 to develop the foundations for strengthening their federations for the future. Participation numbers doubled in our pilot Hoops for Health program in Fiji, whilst sold out crowds in Melbourne and Wellington for the FIBA Oceania Championships, and the passion and excitement for basketball in PNG during the Pacific Games, shows that our sport is continuing to grow at all levels throughout the region. In 2015, we welcomed a new National Federation into the Oceania Family. With Timor-Leste becoming the 22nd National Federation in our region. Work has already begun in Timor-Leste, with funding approved for the Mum’s a Hero program to launch in early 2016. With FIBA in Oceania moving to a new home in Southport, providing greater ease for movement around the region, 2016 will be another immense year as we aim to Double the Number of Participants, Raise the Profile of Basketball and Improve the Capability of Federations.
