One moment I was still driving for what had seemed like an eternity, and the next I had arrived. This was it. I had ventured off the busier tarred roads in search of something authentic. I don’t know what I expected to see, but after asking a friendly local carrying a speckled chicken, I was reassured that this was indeed the place.

/ There’s something about Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, that captures your heart. The awe is not in the town’s growing infrastructure, but rather the humanity of this place. As I drove on the bumpy, dusty streets, passers-by raised their arms to greet me, as though I had just driven past a friend. I can’t claim to have experienced everything Mthatha has to offer, but from my interactions with the informal street vendor selling shiny apples neatly PHAKALANE GOLF ESTATE HOTEL RESORT arranged on cardboard, over-hearing a conversation between barefooted boys WORLD LUXURY HOTEL WINNER saying how sprinkling salt before killing a cow made it taste so much better, and my other interactions with locals as we Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort is a 4 star resort located in the heart of indulged in a meal together, I discovered Gaborone’s premier Golf Estate, which encompasses spacious these five truths about Mthatha. accommodation with extraordinary panoramic views of it’s international You have Arrived! 18-hole championship golf course. YOU’RE PRE-INVITED TO A STRANGER’S WEDDING Mthatha has a strong sense of community. While chit-chatting with children outside a spaza shop (small general dealer), I was asked whether I was going to the wedding. In the distance I spotted a woman waiting by the side of the road who had obviously sent the children to ask me for a lift to the big event. I approached her and told her that I was not from around here. She then asked me if I had not noticed the white flag. Actually, I had. Near a gate, there was a homemade flagpole with what seemed like a torn-up white T-shirt attached to it. A lot of effort had clearly gone into fashioning the pole and putting the flag up. While driving around, I noticed another random flagpole with a white flag attached to it. I later learned that these were “public invitations” to come and celebrate a wedding – signals to members of the community and the general public to join in the festivities. Sadly, I couldn’t attend – I won’t say “gate crash” because the flag had invited me too! to buy an apple, I was asked for my name, She pointed out where she was from and YOU CAN “BUY LIGHTNING” FOR R250 my parents’ surname, where I was from told me about the family she married When I asked the locals about the area’s and where my parents and their parents into. NATURE IS A HEALER Jozi’s Serene Spaces
The way he sat there on the bench overlooking the City of Gold’s vast infrastructure below made me even more determined to press on to the top. By now, I was gasping for air and trying to make myself as comfy as I could sitting on the rocky path. He stood up, folded his arms and stood over an engraved plaque on the floor. I watched. It was still. There were birds in the sky, and if you listened ever so carefully, you could hear the gushing waterfall below.

WALTER SISULU NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, makes you feel as if you are somewhere else. It is vast, serene and filled with wide and narrow hiking trails. It is one of those spaces that allow you to wander and lose yourself in nature. When we did eventually get back to the picnic areas where most visitors assemble, I was curious to know from someone else what they thought about this place. Who better to ask than Gavin Clark, the Canadian gentleman I had seen deep in thought at the top of the hiking trail. “The waterfall was nice. It offers you views that are hard to find anywhere else,” Gavin says. “It didn’t feel like we were in Gauteng. It almost felt like I was still somewhere near the Kruger National Park. I like that you can venture out onto several different trails, including the narrow ones that allow you to generate your own experiences. Just being outside and on top of that hiking trail was something else.”
38/ INDWE JOHANNESBURG BOTANICAL GARDEN “Something else,” is how Obakeng Koma, Trails Assistant at the Kruger National Park, describes the nature- inspired open hiking spaces in and around Johannesburg, including the Johannesburg Botanical Garden. This 81- ha area in Emmarentia is a favourite for nature lovers who want to retreat to green spaces near the hustle and bustle of Jozi. “Considering that there is a lot of development in the city, the Johannesburg Botanical Garden gives people the feeling that they are somewhere far away, immersed in outdoor nature experiences. It relocates people from their busy city life. One gets the feeling that you are breathing clean air and can enjoy the bird life,” Koma says. He adds that when people are in such places, they should pursue silence and never lose the appreciation for all of nature. He also commends conservation areas that strive to protect green areas, even when located in proximity to the city, and calls for the protection of conservation areas from the threats of development.

We experience thousands of events during childhood, and yet as adults we recall only a handful. Some might be “firsts” (our first ice cream, our first day at school), or significant life events (the birth of a sibling, moving house). Others are surprisingly trivial. So, what do your earliest childhood memories say about you? Do they reflect your early skill for remembering, your interests, or your individual experiences? The answer to all three questions is yes – but this is not the whole story.

WILD ABOUT AFRICA
More than 30 million tourists visit Africa every year. Over half of the international arrivals are for business purposes and may partake in tourist activities as well, while 15 % travel for pure tourism and 30 % visit friends and family.

/ Tourists select the continent as a destination for wildlife viewing and to enjoy the sunny skies. Africa is the world’s number one destination for safaris, which range from the exotic to the very simple. The tourism industry is one of the most important for the continent. It provided 12.8 million people with jobs, directly and indirectly, in 2011. Tourism in 2012 contributed over $36 billion, or 2.8 % of the continent’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The continent’s vast and diverse nature makes it complex and difficult to decide on the best region for a safari. But the east, central and southern parts of the continent are by far the preferred choices. These areas generally have well- developed or fast-developing tourism sectors. There is an abundance of wildlife as well as low to no visa requirements for foreigners. Tourists to these regions mostly come from countries like France, the UK, the USA, Germany and Portugal. Below is a quick guide to some of the safari hotspots on the African continent.
EAST AFRICA East African countries are strongly reliant on the tourism industry for generating income. Strong improvements in marketing and cooperation between these nations will help to ensure the success of this vital tourism sector. Standardised criteria for hotels, restaurants and other services across these countries will make it easier for tourists to find suitable services. These countries possess a variety of natural and cultural resources that make tourism possible. ROCKTECHNOL OGY.SANDVIK DOES REMISSION MEAN MY CANCER IS CURED?
So, you’ve been through cancer treatment, and your doctor has called you in for “some good news”. Satisfied, she tells you your cancer is “in remission”. What does this mean? Are you cured? Is the cancer gone forever? And what about all those stories you’ve heard of someone who thought they’d “won the battle” – but then their cancer came back?

But a cancer one centimetre across on a scan has about 100 million cancer cells – even a 0.5 cm cancer has about 10 million cells. A 1 mm cancer, which would not show up on scans, has 100,000 cancer cells. So, even when a cancer can no longer be seen and is no longer causing symptoms, there can still be millions of cells remaining. They can keep growing and eventually the cancer will be large enough to be detected again. That’s when the cancer is said to have relapsed. Some cancers, like testicular cancer, produce proteins (alpha FP and Beta HCG) that can be measured in blood. Measuring these is more accurate than scans in detecting small amounts of cancer. Better still, chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) – a rare form of leukaemia – has a characteristic genetic abnormality, which a very sensitive blood test can detect. This is helpful in determining whether a treatment has eradicated a microscopic disease. The Holy Grail would be to develop such sensitive blood tests for every type of cancer.
ADDITIONAL THERAPIES Because we can’t tell whether remission means a cure for most cancers, treatment strategies have been devised to increase the likelihood of cure. If a cancer is being treated with chemotherapy and becomes undetectable, further courses

MUCH BETTER THAN A COFFEE MAKER Volvo XC60
We have a saying in our house when something is expensive: “Wow! For that price it better make you a cup of coffee in the morning!” The latest Volvo XC60, which launched in South Africa last year, certainly isn’t cheap (it starts at around the R700,000 mark), and it won’t make you coffee either. But it will make your life easier in so many other ways that it will be worth the extra mileage it’ll add to your car repayments.

The drive is smooth, and the gearbox responsive, so it’s easy to get carried away and not even notice the speedometer climbing perilously close to speeding fine territory. But thanks to a heads-up display (which still works pretty well when wearing polarised sunglasses, unlike many others I’ve tested), you are not only constantly reminded of your current speed, but also of the speed limit of the patch of road you’re on. So there’s no way you’ll get caught out by not spotting the street sign indicating a decreased speed limit. It’s also pretty economical at the pumps – the diesel versions obviously more so.
IT’LL KEEP YOU ALIVE The word Volvo has become synonymous with safety, and the XC60 is no exception. In fact, it’s got so many safety bells and whistles, it makes you feel almost unsafe driving in anything other than a Volvo.
