Hybrid Electric & Hydraulic Drives HYBRID ELECTRIC & HYDRAULIC DRIVES Mohammadreza Sadeghi Ali Mohammed Fahimi Rezaii Fluid and Mechatronic Systems Degree Project Department of Management and Engineering LIU-IEI-TEK-A--10/00977--SE 2 Hybrid Electric & Hydraulic Drives ABSTRACT The environmental impact of fossil fuel consumption has been a significant issue over the last decade. Mainly because of public awareness, increased fuel cost and stricter legislation. Today’s technological improvements have reduced fuel consumption and also emission of vehicles considerably. One of the most important solutions to this problem is hybridization. Hybridization in vehicle is using two or more distinct power sources. Additionally, the main objective of hybridization in vehicle is improving the fuel consumption and reducing hazardous air pollutants without lowering vehicle performance and other satisfaction criteria. Development of hybridization systems can be fallen into two categories: electric and hydraulic hybrids. This project illustrates performances of HHV (hybrid hydraulic vehicles) and HEV (hybrid electric vehicles) in NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) and 10-15 mode (Japanese Driving cycle) by using simulation models, which has been done by the LMS Imagine Lab Amesim rev 7th and 8th. The following paper compares HRB (hydraulic regenerative braking system) as a hydraulic system and a parallel hybrid electric system (HEV) with the Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery on the light weight vehicle (1 ton). Results show higher performance in HEV, about 13.7% during NEDC and 25.4% during (10-15) improvement in fuel consumption although high energy density and low power density are inherent battery characteristics. Also, all the evidence point to high cost components and short- life time. The HRB model saves around 11% during NEDC and 23.3% during 10-15Mode in fuel consumption in addition to high power density and low energy density .In other words, limitation for accumulating energy is an intrinsic system character. However, high response, low component cost and weight with long life time are advantages of HRB. Two problems exiting in HRB model are: firstly, the necessity of using big size pumps for fully charging hydraulic accumulators that would be impossible in a light vehicle; and secondly the limitation of capturing huge amount of energy in accumulators. When the hydraulic system accumulator is depleted, the conventional engine reengages; concurrently, brake-regenerated power is recycled and reused by employing hydraulic motor–pump modules in circulation patterns to conserve fuel and recycle brake energy. This study adopted MATLAB Simulink to construct complete HHV and HEV models for backward simulations. New European Driving Cycles were used to determine the changes in fuel economy. In this thesis a parallel hybrid hydraulic wheel loader concept was studied. A high pressure accumulator was added to the system and acted as a second source of en- ergy. By adding the high pressure accumulator, regenerative braking energy can be stored for later utilization. A backward facing simulation model was developed where the high pressure accumulator's State Of Charge (SOC) as state variable and hydraulic pump/motor's displacement as control input. Furthermore, differ- ent energy management strategies: Dynamic Programming (DP), rule-based and Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) were developed. These strategies were evaluated and compared to each other all with respect to the fuel consumption. The result from conventional machine acted as the benchmark for other strategies to compare with. From simulation results, rule-based strategies showed to be the most robust, resulted in lower fuel consumption in every tested driving cycle. For ECMS, the performance varied from cycle to cycle. A reduction in fuel consumption was observed for short-loading cycles. Especially in one cycle, ECMS result outclassed rule-based and was almost the same as DP. However, a small increment was observed for long-carry cycle. Here the introduction of lock-up feature in the torque converter yielded instead the most fuel saving.

The Lagrange multiplier method for computing the optimal energy management control is shown to be 450 times more computationally efficient for use in transmission design iterations.

Matlab/Simulink was applied to establish the pure electric vehicle and HEHV models, and backward simulation was adopted for the simulation, to get the variation of torque and battery state of charge (SOC) through New York City Cycle of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA NYCC). Based on the simulation, the energy management strategy was designed. In this research, the rule-based control strategy was implemented as the energy distribution management strategy first, and then the genetic algorithm was utilized to conduct global optimization strategy analysis. The results from the genetic algorithm were employed to modify the rule-based control strategy to improve the electricity economic performance of the vehicle. The simulation results show that the electricity economic performance of the designed hydraulic hybrid vehicle was improved by 36.51% compared to that of a pure electric vehicle. The performance of energy consumption after genetic algorithm optimization was improved by 43.65%.

The hydro- mechanical system demonstrates excellent fuel economy potential, yet requires development work in the area of pump/motors with high efficiency at low displacement fractions. The fuel consumption of off-road machines is strongly reduced if part load operation of the engine and throttled control of the hydraulic implements are avoided. This is the aim of the ‗Hydrid‘: a full hybrid hydrostatic drive train and control system. The Hydrid has hydraulic accumulators for energy storage and power management, hydraulic transformers for efficient power control, and highly efficient and compact in-wheel motors. System behavior demonstrates that the new control strategy takes advantage of high power density and efficiency characteristics of hydraulic components, and minimizes disadvantages of low energy density, to achieve enhanced overall efficiency.EPA is leading the development of hydraulic hybrid vehicles. This breakthrough technology can cost-effectively reduce emissions and drastically reduce fuel consumption while maintaining or improving performance. A delivery vehicle is an excellent application for hybrid technology since its service cycles involve numerous braking events. Hydraulic hybrid technology has significant commercial potential for a wide range of medium-sized vehicles such as urban delivery trucks, shuttle/transit buses, and waste disposal vehicles.
