    B I O G R A P H Y Rita's credentials are the stuff of legend. After earning a degree in art at Florida State University, the Tennessee native decided to give music a shot before settling into a career as an art teacher. She moved to Memphis and was soon singing jingles, demos and background vocals for a number of area bands. Among them was a husband and wife duo, Delaney & Bonnie. When the pair signed their record deal, Rita suddenly found herself on big-time pop music's leading edge. Her reputation as an A-list backup singer spread quickly. Joe Cocker enlisted her in that role and as a featured soloist on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. (Rita performed a song she'd co-written, “Superstar,” which would later be a huge hit for The Carpenters.) Work with other rock royalty followed, including tours and recordings with Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell and Stephen Stills. In 1971, A&M Records moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss signed her to the label, and one of the most enduring solo careers in all of music was underway. Rita released more than a dozen albums in the years to follow, including 1978's multi-platinum Anytime... Anywhere. Several of her singles would become classics; “We're All Alone,” “Higher And Higher” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do” all qualify as “career” songs. She’s performed with high-profile pals like George Harrison, Roger Waters, Robbie Robertson and Jimmy Buffett. In 1973, Rita married singer, songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson.

Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.

King, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Rita Coolidge, Willie Nelson, Ike & Tina Turn- er, The Rolling Stones – all share one thing in common. They all played with Leon Russell. Fifty years after leaving the plains of Oklahoma for the musical wonderland of Southern California, Russell still brings audiences to their feet. “It’s something to do to keep me from having to get a real job,” cracked Russell, 66. Born to a musical family in Lawton, Oklahoma, young Leon began taking piano lessons at age 4. It seemed like the natural thing to do.     Boz Scaggs Out of the Blues Tour Thursday, August 15, 2019; 7:30 pm personalized mix of rock, blues, and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential 70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching #2 and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks. It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: "It's Over," "Lido Shuffle," and the Grammy-winning "Lowdown." Subsequently, "We're All Alone” from that same album, would become a #1 single for Rita Coolidge. Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man, and such hit singles as "Breakdown Dead Ahead," "Jo Jo" and "Look What You've Done to Me." Despite his '70s successes, Scaggs spent much of the 1980s out of the music-biz spotlight, traveling, opening a family business, fathering young children and founding the San Francisco nightclub, Slim's, He returned to the studio after an eight-year hiatus and released, Other Roads, Some Change, Dig, the Grammy-nominated Come on Home, the unplugged Fade Into Light, the in-concert retrospective Greatest Hits Live as well as a stint touring with Donald Fagen’s New York Rock & Soul Review; all while continuing to maintain a loyal audience in the U.S. and overseas, particularly in Japan. A pair of albums of jazz standards, But Beautiful and Speak Low, the latter topping the Billboard Jazz chart, demonstrated Scaggs' stylistic mastery, as did the Southern-flavored Memphis and the rhythm and bluesy A Fool to Care.

She won Grammys with Kris Kristofferson. She had hits covering songs first made famous by The Temptations, Boz Scaggs and Jackie Wilson, and scored a new one for James Bond. She waxed “Superstar” before the Carpenters. Now the most expansive retrospective of her career, the two-CD Delta Lady: The Rita Coolidge Anthology (Hip-O Records), released February 10, 2004, spans three decades of classic tracks, hits and rarities from one of music’s most admired singers. Compiled with her full participation, Delta Lady: The Rita Coolidge Anthology looks back on a truly remarkable career, much of it on A&M Records. Each of the chronologically arranged 41 selections, many never before released on CD, has been 96k/24- bit digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Disc One begins in the ‘70s with her first single, “Turn Around And Love You,” followed by the live Cocker-introduced “Superstar” (a highlight of the infamous Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and album). Also heard are tracks such as “Bird On A Wire,” “The Lady’s Not For Sale,” “Fever,” “Only You Know And I Know,” “That Man Is My Weakness,” “Love Has No Pride” and “Am I Blue?” from her early ‘70s solo albums as well as “A Song I’d Like To Sing” and “Loving Arms” from the Kristofferson-Coolidge 1973 duet album Full Moon.
