Russel & Aitken Finding Aid 6 Falkirk Archives (Archon Code: GB558) FALKIRK ARCHIVES Russel & Aitken Papers finding aid (6) Records of private clients The finding aid for the Russel & Aitken Papers has been divided into 63 parts. This part contains a list of records relating to various individuals and families who were private clients of Russel & Aitken. Family histories Details of family histories where known are shown within the item list. Scope & Contents Note Miscellaneous papers of clients related to legal work undertaken by Russel & Aitken on their behalf, mainly executry and trust papers and conveyancing papers with titles of various lands and properties. Also papers relating to legal disputes, family and civil law. Related papers See also separate finding aids for the papers of some clients with larger quantities of records extant. Finding aids The cataloguing information can also be accessed by using the Collections Browser www.collections.falkirk.gov.uk Arrangement The records are arranged in broadly alphabetical order of the client. Some papers are disputes between two or more parties and it is not clear which party was the client of Russel & Aitken so one has been chosen for the purposes of this arrangement. For executry papers, although the actual client may have been the executor or other heirs, for the purposes of this finding aid, the client is identified as the as the deceased person whose executry was dealt with by Russel & Aitken. Where papers are clearly of related family members the papers have been grouped together (using sub numbers). It is not known whether other individuals with the same surname are related to each other and their papers are therefore individually listed. With such a large collection, it is likely that there are mistakes in these groupings and any researchers identifying these mistakes after examining the records are encourage to notify Falkirk Archives of this. • The Carlyle Society Papers
THE CARLYLE SOCIETY SESSION 2011-2012 OCCASIONAL PAPERS 24 • Edinburgh 2011 1 2 President’s Letter With another year’s papers we approach an important landmark in Carlyle studies. A full programme for the Society covers the usual wide range (including our mandated occasional paper on Burns), and we will also make room for one of the most important of Thomas’s texts, the Bible. 2012 sees a milestone in the publication of volume 40 of the Carlyle Letters, whose first volumes appeared in 1970 (though the project was a whole decade older in the making). There will be a conference (10-12 July) of academic Carlyle specialists in Edinburgh to mark the occasion – part of the wider celebrations that the English Literature department will be holding to celebrate its own 250th anniversary of Hugh Blair’s appointment to the chair of Rhetoric, making Edinburgh the first recognisable English department ever. The Carlyle Letters have been an important part of the research activity of the department for nearly half a century, and there will also be a public lecture later in November (when volume 40 itself should have arrived in the country from the publishers in the USA). As part of the conference there will be a Thomas Green lecture, and members of the Society will be warmly invited to attend this and the reception which follows. Details are in active preparation, and the Society will be kept informed as the date draws closer. Meantime work on the Letters is only part of the ongoing activity, on both sides of the Atlantic, to make the works of both Carlyles available, and to maintain the recent burst of criticism which is helping make their importance in the Victorian period more and more obvious.

It had been parochial in concentrat- ing on the opportunities, problems and implications of devolution within Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; little attention had been paid to devo- lution's impact UK on the as a whole or on the `centre' - Whitehall and Westminster.

  • Carron Company & Eastern Europe
Carron Company & Eastern Europe The Export of Industrial Technology to Eastern Europe from Carron in the Late Eighteenth Century: Russia & Silesia Geoff B Bailey When the Carron Ironworks was established in 1759 Scotland was still a rural country. Despite the use of steam engines in a handful of pits, it was technologically backward and its inhabitants reflected the pre- industrial culture. They were ignorant unskilled workers, unwilling to adopt new working methods and content to earn enough to survive upon. There was no enterprise culture, except amongst its merchants, and there were no large manufacturing plants to compare with those in other countries. Scotland’s main chemical product, salt, was produced in a traditional manner organised as little more than a cottage industry. From its conception the Carron Ironworks relied upon foreign expertise. Even refractory bricks could not be made locally and like the hearthstones and timber axle for the water wheel had to be imported from England. Whilst Cadell saw to the day-to-day management of the works, the other two founding partners, Roebuck and Garbett, scoured England in search of the right sort of hard-working knowledgeable foundryman whom they tried desperately to entice northwards. William Downing, a carpenter, millwright and bellows maker was poached from a foundry in the Midlands along with his fellow countryman Thomas Bowne. They were told to bring only two of their workmen, as the intention was to “train Scottish labour for future use.” As was usual, they brought with them family members to help and Downing’s nephew was put in charge of the millwrights.
