The Comic Artists:

Burne Hogarth was born on December 25, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois. At age 12 he was accepted to the Chicago Art Institute where he started his formal aesthetic training. While in High School, Hogarth took night classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He was an avid reader of newspaper funnies. At age 15 he was hired by the Associated Editors Syndicate, where he illustrated two sports strips, but was also given his own panel to draw Famous Churches of the World. In 1929 Hogarth created Ivy Hemmanhaw for the Bonnet-Brown Syndicate, which ran for just under a year. In 1937 he was hired as artist Hal Foster’s replacement for the Tarzan comic strip, which gave him his big break. The first Hogart-signed Tarzan appeared in print on May 9, 1937, two months after he took over the strip. From 1937 to 1945, he drew the Sunday Tarzan for United Features Syndicate. In 1950, he left the Tarzan strip.

Hogarth was an instructor of drawing at several institutions. He created the Manhattan Academy of Newspaper Art and by 1947 transformed it into the and Illustrators School. It was renamed School of Visual Arts (SVA) in 1956. It is now one of the world’s leading art schools. Hogarth served in various functions for the school. He retired from the school in 1970 but continued to teach in other art schools. After 20 years, he returned to comic strip work in 1972, with Tarzan of the Apes, followed by Tales of Tarzan, in 1976. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Society Advertising and Illustration Award in 1975. Hogarth died on January 28, 1996.

V.T. Hamlin (Vincent Trout Hamlin) was born on May 10, 1900, in Perry, Iowa. He drew his first character that became Alley Oop at age 11. Four years later, his first cartoons were published in the Perry Daily Chief newspaper. Hamiln enlisted in the Army in World War I at the age of 17. While recovering from a poison gas attack in France, he began illustrating the letters of fellow soldiers. A newspaper man he met while in the Army convinced him that he could make a living from his art abilities. After the war he returned to Perry High School and later attended a first term of college at the University of Missouri in 1920, followed by studying journalism at Drake University in 1922. He left school and worked at various jobs throughout the United States, including some newspapers. Back in Perry, Hamlin created Alley Oop, and submitted it to a small syndicate, Bonnet-Brown, which launched the strip as a daily beginning on December 5, 1932. Bonnet-Brown collapsed a few months later, and the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) picked it up and it started again on August 7, 1933-a Sunday strip was added on September 9, 1934. Hamlin’s wife, Dorothy, also worked on the strip, creating color roughs and contributing story ideas, including the important device of time travel, introduced April 5, 1939.

Hamlin wrote and drew Alley Oop with the help of Dave Graue until his retirement in 1971. Graue continued to write the strip until his August 2001 retirement The current Alley Oop Sunday and daily strips are drawn by Jack Bender and written by his wife Carole Bender.

The Hamlins moved to Sarasota, Florida, after V.T.’s retirement. Dorothy Hamlin died in 1985, and V.T. Hamlin died in Brooksville, Florida in 1993 at the age of 93.

In 1957, he created the comic strip ‘Kitten Kaye’ and made a comic called ‘Tom, Dick & Harry.’ Leon Beroth died on March 1, 1980.
