George ROBERT Born on September 15, 1960 in Chambésy (Geneva), Switzerland, George Robert is internationally reCognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz today. He started piano at a very early age and at age 10 he began Clarinet lessons at the Geneva Conservatory with LuC Hoffmann. In 1980 he moved to Boston and studied alto saxophone with Joe Viola at the Berklee College of MusiC. In 1984 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition & Arranging and moved to New York where he enrolled at the Manhattan SChool of MusiC. He studied with Bob Mintzer and earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz PerformanCe in 1987. He played lead alto in the Manhattan SChool of MusiC Big Band for 2 years, whiCh earned in 1985 the 1st Prize in the College Big Band Category in the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Awards In July 1984 he performed on the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and earned an Outstanding PerformanCe Award from Down Beat Magazine. In 1985 & 1986 he toured Europe extensively. In 1987 he met Tom Harrell and together they founded the George Robert-Tom Harrell Quintet (with Dado Moroni, Reggie Johnson & Bill Goodwin). The group Completed 125 ConCerts worldwide between 1987 & 1992, and reCorded 5 albums. He remained in New York City and free-lanCed for 7 years, playing with Billy Hart, Buster Williams, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Jazz OrChestra, Joe Lovano, and many others. He met Clark Terry and started touring with him extensively, Completing a 16- week, 65-ConCert world tour in 1991. -

Après une phase de sensibilisation à des « musiques nègres » °10 constituant une préhistoire du jazz (minstrels, Cake-walk pour Debussy, débarquement d’orchestres militaires américains en 1918, puis tour- Hors série n nées et bientôt immigration de musiciens afro-américains…), de jeunes pionniers, suivis et encouragés par une certaine avant-garde intellectuelle et artistique (Jean Cocteau, Jean Wiener…), entrepren- / Vient de paraître / nent, dans les années 1920, avec plus de passion que d’originalité, d’imiter et adapter le « message » d’outre-Atlantique. En 1959, je suis en passe de quitter le piano pour la contrebasse et découvre Ah Um. Celui-ci deviendra mon disque de chevet. La musique de cet album coule dans mes veines. Mingus, invente une musique à fleur de peau, intense, exacerbée. Dans ses tensions, elle annonce le Free Jazz. En 1959, il est trop « classique » pour les « modernes » ‘et trop moderne pour les classiques. Avec mes camarades nous jouerons la musique de Charles Mingus comme on s'enfonce dans une forêt mystérieuse et pourtant familière ...Une musique de déchirure, au bord des larmes, à la pulsation tellement charnelle, pleine de tendresse. A Festival for the 10Th Edition of HEAR PALMER
Press Release Margaux, February 2019 A festival for the 10th edition of HEAR PALMER Château Palmer gives carte blanche to the jazzman Émile Parisien, patron of the 2018 vintage and creative director of three concerts programmed from 29 to 31 March 2019. In 2009, a meeting between Thomas Duroux, managing director of Château Palmer, and Jacky Terrasson, the famous Franco-American jazz pianist, gave birth to an original concept – Hear Palmer. The idea: to give the en primeur period a unique, artistic tenor, created by jazz artists of world renown, who would link each vintage to an improvisation of their own during a concert in the estate’s barrel cellars. Jacky Terrasson in 2009, and Yaron Herman and Michel Portal in 2010 were the first to associate their notes with those of Château Palmer’s en primeur wines. Daniel Humair, Lionel Belmondo, Archie Shepp(1) – among others – would do so in the vintages that followed. An artists’ residence to absorb the sprit of the vintage Every year at Château Palmer a score is written. That of the new vintage, composed from the vineyard to the cellar. Capturing the personality of the new blend, and rendering an interpretation in music, requires partaking in the life of the estate during this intense period. It’s in that sprit that Château Palmer welcomes the musicians for an artists’ residence; they come and discover the vineyard, the château, the history, the men and women, and the wines – in particular the vintage of which they will become its patron and its voice. Out of this immersion comes music.. -

René Urtreger – Bio (En)
KARAVANE rené urtreger Victoire d’Honneur du Jazz 2005 piano Pianist and french composer René Urtreger, born in 1934, studied classical piano before immersing himself in jazz at Blue Note with D. Byas and B. Clayton. He then played live with J.J. Johnson, S. Getz, Z. Sims, S. Grappelli, B. Jaspar, T. Thomas, L. Hampton, C. Baker, L. Young (on Le Dernier Message de Lester Young, his last record). He played with Miles Davis on the Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud soundtrack, and in 1956 and 1957 he gave concert performances throughout Europe. In 1960 he won the Django Reinhardt award for HUM . He also composed soundtracks for C. Berri and R. Ferret films. During the eighties he regularly performed in concerts and festivals with D. Gillespie, S. Getz, L. Konitz, and with various ensembles of his own. Since completing the third installment of his journey with the HUM trio (Humair, Urtreger, Michelot), he has performed solo or with his own trio : Yves Torchinsky on bass and Eric Dervieu on drums. In the little world of jazz he is sometimes called King René, perhaps as a distant echo of the fourteenth-century count of Provence who preferred arts and letters and the company of intellectuals to the fervour of war and courtly visits. René Urtreger is a bit this way. Modest in his speech, easy in his manners, discreet about his accomplishments. And yet he has frequented the beau monde, and when one knows his story, one knows that it is the stuff of a novel about a life in jazz. -
