If the predicted shortage of New Zealand sauvignon blanc materialises, remember that this South African option closely resembles those Marlborough versions we enjoy so much. Perfumed and intense, it exhibits herbal apple, apricot and ripe melon flavours with sherbet infused texture and sufficient citrus bite to add firm acidity.

2020 LFE Bin Series Merlot

With much inexpensive merlot currently light in both colour and texture, this dark and substantial version from one of Chile’s major players is very welcome. The wine itself is vi- brant and nutty with rich cherry and raspberry flavours, good acidity, background mint and aniseed influences but

only minimal tannin.

However, Welton Bowls Club closed last year and five or six of their remaining members have joined us this year and have proved to be a great asset, both playing and working on the green. We were therefore able to play all our matches and expect to do so next year also.

We are holding our Annual General Meeting in Ingham Village Hall at 7pm on Thursday 28th October this year and hope all members will attend. Anybody interested in playing bowls will be very welcome to attend as well. If any potential new members wish to learn more about the club, don’t hesitate to speak to the Club Secretary as below.

We’re delighted to be back in school for a new academic year and looking forward to enjoying lots of activities that we didn’t manage to do during the pandemic. One of these is our Year 5 and 6 Residential Visit to Castleton with our Friends at Ingham School. It’s a great way to start the year, developing bonds between each other, especially when moving into a new class. On this trip, children took on the role of ‘Special Agents’ and cracked codes, overcame challenges and solved problems to recover a stolen diamond. Being at primary school is full of adventures. The skills we develop are wide and varied but prepare chil- dren for a future full of unknowns. We have a new group of Reception pupils who have settled in very well to the school. We’re excited and privileged to be able to watch their progress for the next seven years. On their first day in school, we planted an apple tree. As we do for one another, we’ll nurture it, support it to help it flourish to become big, strong and healthy. Hopefully, there will be a photo to share in seven years’ time with these children and the same tree.

During October we will be holding our traditional Harvest Services in a number of our churches and also will be looking ahead and planning our Christmas Services.

Following the recently well attended meeting with the Rural Dean ,Richard Cross- land regarding the Resourcing Sustainable Church initiative the future role of each of our village churches is being seriously considered by the PCC and although some of our churches may be designated as Festival Churches with occasional ser- vices there are no plans to close any of our churches.

If you require any help or assistance please contact Fr Sebastian or myself

Page 20 e-mail: village. [email protected] News from Glentworth Parish Council At our last meeting (8th Sept), Glentworth Parish Council talked about a number of current and potential future projects for the Village. New public seating A number of residents have suggested that we should look to provide some additional seating for the village, so the PC has started to look at both the types of seating that could be provided but, more importantly, where any additional seats should be placed. The PC discussed some possible locations, which are listed below, but we are also keen to hear from Glentworth residents about where they would like new seats to go? The ideas that have been suggested so far are: • On Northlands Road track • Near the birdfeeder next to the lake • Elizabeth Close green area • On Northlands Road • At the top of Hanover Hill (next to the bus stop) • In the churchyard If Glentworth residents would like to make a suggestion about new seating, can they email these to the Parish Clerk ([email protected]) or pop a note in the PC post -box at the Village Hall. New play equipment On the subject of the Village Hall, the PC have now finalised the proposal for the new play equipment at the Village Hall and have started the fundraising bids. We do need to raise a fair bit of money for this, about £25,000, so will be making a number of bids in the coming weeks. A picture of the new equipment is on display in the Village Hall, so if you’re visiting then take a look.

Other projects under discussion include creating some wildflower areas around the vil- lage, possibly linked to any new seating we buy. Planting wildflowers is a great way for us to encourage butterflies, bees and other insects that will help the environment as well as adding some colour to verges, and other open areas. We’re discussing the detail of this with the Lincs Wildlife Trust and others to make sure we get the right advice.

If you want to know more about the work of the Parish Council, look at the Agendas and Minutes of our meetings, including comments on Planning Applications, then this and more information can be found at: https://glentworth.parish.lincolnshire.gov.uk/

Ingham Parish Council Update This update is based on decisions and updates at the last meeting of the Parish Council on 13h September. You can find the most recent agreed minutes on the Parish Council website https://ingham.parish.lincolnshire.gov.uk and the Parish Council noticeboard.

The Parish Council have filled the Councillor vacancy by co-option with Sue Jacklin. We welcome her to our group and look forward to her contributions to the community. The external audit by PKF Littlejohn LLP has concluded and they have found no matters of concern with the Parish Council accounts and practices. A conclusion notice is displayed on the Parish Council noticeboard and on the website.

The speed sign has now been re-positioned to Lincoln Road and the average speed in August/ September was 27.7mph. Thank you to all of you who are adhering to the speed limit in the village.

Recreation area project: Tender responses have been received from interested suppliers and these were opened in closed session at the Parish Council meeting in September. The content of the responses look very exciting and a preferred supplier will now be selected based on quality, cost and whether they have met the brief that came from the surveys with the village and school pupils.

Financial matters: The Parish Council approved payments to Green Grass Contracting for grass cuts between July and August and reimbursement to the Village Caretaker for repairs to the memorial seat on The Green. Invoices were also paid for the annual pay area inspection by Wicksteed and to PKF Littlejohn LLP for the external audit.

The Book Exchange was damaged during August when some glass panels were intentionally broken. The Village Caretaker repaired this and we also reported the incident to the Police. We have been experiencing some issues with the number and type of books being left in the phone box. Please can you be considerate in the number you leave and remember that young children also use the box to find books.

The Parish Council have approved use of the car park and playing field by the Village Hall Committee in order to hold the Bonfire Night event this year. We hope that this will be a successful event this year.

Neighbourhood Plan: The Parish Council aim to hold public events to receive resident’s feedback about the sites’ assessments at an event in the village hall on 8th October. A notice will be circulated to households inviting parishioners to attend. We hope you can take part.

Finally, in the last edition we noted that we are looking for a person to take on responsibility for flag raising and lowering on the flag pole on The Green. We have not received any volunteers to date. Please let the Clerk know if you would like to take this on.

Gavin Monks, Clerk to Ingham Parish Council

Good news! If your child was born between the 1st September 2017 and the 31st August 2018 then it is time to apply for a place in Reception for next September! We know this sounds like a massive step and very soon, but it is important that you apply on the Lin- colnshire County Council website, shortly. Online applications open on the 15th November 2021 and close at midday on the 15th January 2022 for September 2022 entry. We would absolutely love for you to choose our school and would be pleased to hear from you if you have any questions you’d like answering. And if you are really looking a long way into the future then we also have some reassurances for secondary school choices below! (Yes the time does really go that quickly) Secondary School Place Myth Buster From time to time we hear rumours circulating around the village that “Ingham Primary School is outside the catchment area for .” This is simply not true and causes damage to our own school when local families choose to live elsewhere or not attend our school because of this information. Firstly it is important to note that school admissions are based on a child’s home residence, not the previous school they attended. In my time as Headteacher of Ingham Primary School (11 years) there has only been one year where some children were unsuccessful in gaining a place at their preferred school of William Farr. That particular year there was a considerably larger cohort at many of the local schools. If you hear rumours that Ingham is outside of the catchment for William Farr School - it is simply not true. Please do check with us (or with William Farr School), either call the office on 01522 730244 or arrange to come and see me at school. We’d love to meet you and your children and show you all the reasons why you should consider Ingham Primary School to start your child’s educational journey (and in case you are looking for a school family to slot into mid-year, we always love welcoming new members).

Thank you.

Mr I Tyas, Headteacher, Ingham Primary School.

Able Community Care is a Norfolk home care company which was established in 1980 and now provides care 24/7 throughout the UK and beyond. We continually read news/articles flagging up the activities of Doorstep Criminals: fraudulent roofers, gardeners, service officials and other non-genuine visitors who target older people. Over the years we have also had first-hand evidence from our own clients and carers. As a company we have decided to see if we can help prevent this on a small scale and so we have had the Door Safety Stick- er (attached) to give away to older people. To date we have sent out 60,000 upon request, since February 2019. If you think your older readers may like to have one, please ask them to either ring us on 01603 764567 or email to [email protected]. Page 35 e-mail: village. [email protected] FRESH from ALISON’S KITCHEN

While we start to think about the inevitable change of cuisine as the autumn months approach, here’s some very appropriate Lincolnshire fare to delight the tables of those who live in these parts. Lincoln Red beef can be served in a num- ber of ways but this slow roast must be up there with the best. Give it a go and support local producers at the same time (well perhaps not with the girolle mushrooms - although it is worth enquiring at the Ingham Village Mini- Market!).

Slow Roast

Lincoln Red beef brisket Ingredients: • 1kg of Lincoln Red beef brisket • 2lt of red wine For the sauce: • 1 diced carrot • 250g of blueberries • 1 diced red onion • 50g of butter • 1 diced head of celery • 5 juniper berries crushed • Bunch of fresh thyme • 1 chopped shallot • 4lt of beef stock • 50ml of plain vodka (save the • Scottish girolle mushrooms rest of the bottle for later!) • 100g of butter • 1 tablespoon of caster sugar • 1 clove of garlic chopped • 100ml of beef stock • Salt and pepper to taste • Salt to taste

Method: 1. Season the brisket, roast both sides in a baking tray with a little oil. 2. Remove the brisket and add all diced vegetables and thyme, cook for 5 minutes. 3. Wet with the red wine and add the brisket, pour all the stock. 4. Cover with aluminium foil and bake in a 90ºC hot oven for 8 hours or over- night. 5. For the sauce melt the butter in a pan, add the crushed juniper berries and gently infuse for 15 minutes, strain the juniper and add the chopped shallot. 6. Cook for 4 minutes and add the sugar and blueberries. 7. Cook for 1 minute and wet with the vodka, add the cooking liquid from the beef and cook for 10 minutes. 8. Blend to puree and serve with the brisket. Before serving wash the girolle mushrooms and pan fry with a little oil and salt.

Page 36 e-mail: village. [email protected] LETTER FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

Autumn is here … life goes on …

It2nd has Place been a joy to watch harvesters at work in the fields recently. There is something spe- cial about harvesting. The sight of plumes of dust rising behind the harvester and the trailer is still before my eyes! The miracle of Nature! Providence! A century ago, it was all so differ- ent! Everything was done manually – the reaping, gathering, threshing…and the milling. Now a single person can do all that using the latest and sophisticated machines!

It hasn’t been good news for the English Team at the The Oval. As I write, the match to be played at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground at Manchester has been cancelled due to cases of covid-19 among the players. We were hoping to see a thrilling finish but the pan- demic has reared its ugly head again! But our Emma Raducanu has made up for that! Aren’t we all so proud of and inspired by her mind-boggling performance?

Lots of things are happening on the political front. The 1.25 increase on the NI will bring ex- tra cash to the NHS but will it solve the problem of care and over 5 million on the waiting list for special treatments? Politics is basically a good thing but are our politicians doing the right things for people in this land? A good question to ponder and pray about.

Huge changes are afoot in the Church of and in our own . There is a lot of good will everywhere. But again, will the changes being bandied about bring about the real change that the Church needs? Balancing the books is a good thing but what about the Kingdom of God? It is time every baptised Christian rediscover his/her role to spread the ‘good news’ of hope and love in his/her home and neighbourhood. 3rd Place Many are suffering, quietly wiping tears of indignation, desperation and frustration. It looks like an invisible evil force wants to strangle our way of life and human integrity. We are also swamped with new technologies some of which are merely money-making novelties. Life has changed. Culture has changed. Technology is good but has it increased our sense of security and serenity? Isn’t it also time to turn to a spiritual solution? Will we take the hint? Will we cross the Rubicon of faith decisions once and for all?

Our nine churches (one on the way to close) are not mere buildings. They are living symbols of faith of our ancestors. The Springline Parish exists for you. We know you are reticent and wary. But give the Church another chance to help you in your spiritual journey! As St Paul wrote: “All things are possible for those who love God!” Your friend, Fr Sebastian (Rector, Springline Parish, Diocese of Lincoln)

Cllr. Sneath reported that following on from the discussions with residents at the Annual Parish Meeting she had looked at the Minutes from the previous 4 years. Via Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership she contacted Graeme Butler, a LCC Highways engineer, who agreed to meet her in the village to discuss residents’ concerns. The following items were raised and discussed: 1. Siting of 2 highway poles with SID boards attached to these – Graeme stated that there was nothing wrong in where they had been placed at either end of the village. He did confirm that all areas in the country are dealing with massive speeding problems at the present time. He suggested that the PC look at asking LCC highways to change a small metal pole with 30mph sign attached to it, for a larger pole and purchase extra sets of brackets, this would give more flexibility to move SID boards around the village. 2. Graeme said that the next best thing would be to join Community Speed Watch pro- gramme that is organised by LRSP. Cllr Sneath explained that we had already done this and acquired some volunteers. We have now gone live with putting CSW into opera- tion. The main idea is to educate speeding drivers to change their driving habits. 3. Tree roots on corner of paddock, growing through pathway, could cause accidents to walkers – Graeme will pass this onto highways. 4. 2 broken drain covers on paddock – he would pass this onto highways again but mark it as urgent job as they are dangerous. 5. Pathway in bad state in front of cottages near to church – he would pass this on to highways. 6. Bollards on road in front of church – unfortunately it would take a seriously bad acci- dent or a fatality to get highways to look at this concern. 7. Tree branches over hanging lamp post 20 near St John’s Close – Graeme will ask ques- tion at highways, who is responsible highways or PC. General question regarding the trees on the village green – Graeme will again ask high- ways to check whether highways or PC are responsible. 8. Finally Cllr Sneath took Graeme to look at the footpath causing concern at the back of the new housing development – he will send an email to Chris Miller at highways and ask him to do a site visit and if necessary have a chat with the developer.

The PC agreed to ask highways to change a small pole for a larger pole to enable the SID boards to be moved around. Most of these issues had already been reported to Highways but it was hoped that with the additional input from Graeme the matters would be attended to more quickly. Full Minutes can be read on the Parish Council website after their approval at the next Parish Council meeting http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/scampton

Scarecrows Return to

Glentworth! September sun welcomed back the Glentworth Scarecrow Festival and its celebration of “Books and their Characters”. Children’s favourites , the Arabian Nights, classic novels, thrillers and more sprang up to celebrate Glentworth’s first community get together since you know when. Paddington and The Stick Man rubbed shoulders with Erno Goldfinger, The Man in the Iron Mask and Moominpapa – the oddest dinner party ever!! Tasty barbecue food and a well stocked bar together with ice creams and delicious cakes helped villagers and visitors enjoy a relaxed afternoon in the sunshine catching up with old friends and making some new ones. A big thank you to everyone who made scarecrows, volunteered on the day and who turned up to share in the event.
