Find us on: facebook 2 www.hrcc.org.au Editorial Covid continues to play merry hell in all aspects of life these days. It seems to me that the general public are doing an admirable job in complying with any requirements to prevent the spread while also coping with the changes that it has brought. Motorsport plans and schedules once again have been adversely affected by declaration of hotspots and the ramifications from that. The biggest historic event of the year, the Phillip Island Festival of Motorsport took place but the magic that the event brings was diminished due to no overseas competitors combined with a limit of just 1000 spectators. HRCC member, John Carson has been kind enough to provide a story of his experience at this years event. Plans are well underway for the Autumn Historic Warwick race meeting and entries are filling nicely, including competitors from interstate. Fingers crossed for no further Covid disruptions to the plan. Talk about disruptions, I was due to fly to Adelaide tomorrow morning. Checked in, boarding pass sorted, and less that 18 hours before the flight I was advised the flight had been cancelled due to developing covid issues. I had plans to attend the Mallala All Historics race meeting. Ah well…. I hope you enjoy this issue. Ian Welsh

On Tuesday we were Phillip Island bound with an overnight in Nerrandera before arriving at Cowes before dusk. Phil prefers to do the driving and is very economical with his dialogue. Usually quite a few HRCC members make the trip south including regulars Mike Gehde and Kevin Gray. Another is Phill Powell who grew up on a dairy farm at Bass on the shores of Westernport Bay, overlooking Phillip Island, and thinks nothing of dropping back annually. I recall, in the 2019 event, that Phill had been let down by ignition maladies with his little red rocket i.e. the Ferrari. Yes, a disappointing outing, but last year in 2020 the car went well and he managed a best lap time of 2 minutes 04.6 seconds but was still keen to improve. Phill was set to return to The Island for 2021 so I promptly inserted myself into his 10-day program. On the Monday before PI, I motored from Brisbane (continued pg 6)

Besides the spec- tacular setting on Bass Strait and the natural beauty of the track surrounds, a weekend at PI is also a great opportunity to catch up with other kindred spirits, es- pecially the Group S guys and girls and other mates. No such catch up could be complete without a hun- kering down with fine food, good wine and of course those kindred spirits.

On the subject of Grids and Running Order for Quali- fying the very professional GSRA had liaised with race organisers and opted not to run their two grids by the usual Historic Group S definition, i.e., year of manufac- ture sub-categories of Sa, Sb and Sc and then engine capacities within these sub groups. Rather there were two grids, basically split in half by engine capacity and nominally classified as the ‘Bomber’ Class being 22 cars of over 2 litre capacity and the ‘Mosquito’ Class being 26 cars of under 2 litres. Given the RAAF has just celebrated its 100-year anniversary I was touched that GSRA organisers Tom Walstab and Alex Webster had been so patriotic to the memory of our military aviation history (e.g., the RAAF’s A52 de Havilland Mosquito and our contribution to the RAF’s Bomber Command) and of course in Europe racers are re- ferred to as ‘pilots’. He came to Australia in the 1970’s and resides in Brisbane. In January this year, he celebrated his 100th birthday and Wayne Tupicoff gave Arthur a ride in his restored Land Rover. Born in England in1921, Arthur studied to become an engineer and after which he was seconded into the British 2nd world war efforts. His work involved improving and testing the performance of aircraft engines where he gained knowledge of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. These engines being mainly for Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft. Simultaneously, the Rover company was working on the war effort Meteor project which was to develop a Rolls Royce Merlin engine for use in military tanks. One of Rover’s engineers working on the project had an accident preventing him from working so they were Arthur Goddard a man down.
