MONTE CATER DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Now in his ninth year as athletic director is Monte Cater, a 1971 graduate of Millikin University. Cater was appointed the College's director of athletics on February 5, 1993 and has served as the school's football coach since 1987. Cater oversees the operation and administration of Shepherd's 13-sport NCAA Division II athletic program, while maintaining one of the top football programs in the WVIAC. Cater wasted little time establishing himself as a winner at Shepherd as he led the Rams to a tie for the WVIAC title in 1988. A 6-3-1 record in 1990 earned the Rams a second-place finish in the WVIAC and served as a prelude to a two-year run of domination through the conference. Cater guided the 1991 team to an 8-3 record and the school's first NAIA Playoff appearance since 1986. Although the Rams fell in the first round of the playoffs, they had established themselves as the team to beat in the WVIAC and finished the season ranked sixth nationally. The 1992 season proved to be one of Cater's best as head coach of the Rams as Shepherd compiled a 9-3 overall record, which included their second straight 7-0 mark in the WVIAC. Cater led the Rams to one of their best seasons ever in 1997 with a 9-1 mark and a share of the WVIAC crown. Shepherd set numerous school records en route to its most exciting season since the undefeated team of 1955. In 1998, Cater led the Rams to a 10-2 mark and their first-ever trip to the NCAA II Playoffs. Shepherd upset Indiana (PA), 9-6, in the first round of the playoffs. He led the Rams back to the NCAA II Playoffs with in 1999 with a 9-2 mark. Cater has been tabbed the WVIAC Coach of the Year five times (1991, 1992, 1997, 1998, 1999). Prior to coming to Shepherd, Cater was the primary architect in reviving the Lakeland College program in Sheboygan, WI. In six seasons as the head coach at Lakeland Cater transformed the program into a winner, as the team won three conference titles in his last three seasons, while he was named Coach of the Year twice. Cater, a former member of the NAIA National Football Ranking Committee, the Playoff Manual Committee, and the District 2 All-American Selection Committee for the American Football Coaches Association, earned his B.A. in physical education from Millikin in 1971, before moving to SIU-Carbondale, where he earned his master's in physical education as well. He and his wife, Bonnie, have a daughter, Taylor Lauren, and a son, Logan.

"We are proud of the steady growth and development of our women's basketball program under Coach Blose. She has helped elevate Shepherd to 'contender status' in the WVIAC title hunt." • Monte Cater

* WVIAC GAMES HOME GAMES IN BOLD In Remembrance of Lost Friends • Micky Garrett

Our hearts remain heavy, at your passing away. And you're still on our minds, each and every day.

We'll cherish your memory, and you're thoughtful ways. And hold them dear to us, all the rest of our days.

In comfort we know, in our hearts and our minds. That healing takes place always, in due time.

Sorrow sometimes, can help us to grow. As we face the departure of someone we know.

To realize - the meaning of comrade and friend, that we took for granted, till it came to an end.

Peace, we shall have, be quiet, be still. We must go on, it would be God's will.

America, we weep, for so many brave soldiers, whose only thoughts, were the lives of others.

United We Stand The Shepherd College women's basketball program would like to dedicate the 2001-02 media guide to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks; to their families, and to the many heroes who assisted in the rescue efforts.
