The Class Agent System

Class Agents Are Very Important People

The Class Agent is a valuable volunteer for Millsaps College, an important advocate for encouraging alumni to participate in college events and to give back to Millsaps through the annual fund.

Alumni of all ages respond more favorably when asked by a peer to attend college related events and to support the annual fund. These personal “asks” are particularly important in our Young Alumni classes, where annual giving participation is still developing. Class participation is important for all of our events to be successful, especially Homecoming. Also, we want to report to all alumni, board of trustees, and our campus community, as well as foundations that our alumni percentage in giving is steadily increasing. Gifts to the Millsaps Annual Fund support: • Student scholarships • Faculty support • Library enhancements • Campus life and preservation • Where Millsaps needs are greatest

Class Agent Job Description

As a Class Agent, you serve as a liaison between the Institutional Advancement (IA) office and your classmates. Working with the alumni and annual giving offices, you will be involved in promoting class participation for alumni events and annual giving. The IA office will provide you with support and assistance. The job is NOT time-consuming, and the IA office will prompt you in advance of important deadlines. You will be doing a great service to Millsaps by further engaging your classmates in the life of the college and by helping the Millsaps Annual Fund secure a higher participation from your class.

While no specified level of support is associated with the position, it is expected that each Class Agent will participate in the annual fund and make the most thoughtful commitment possible.

Also, you will help to promote Homecoming and other alumni events throughout the school year. You will help the alumni branch of IA by contacting fellow alumni through letters, emails and phone calls. Again, the IA staff will provide you with all materials needed to complete the task and it will not be time-consuming.

Each Class Agent will actively support the ongoing efforts of the College by leadership and example of giving to the College, communication with classmates about goals of Millsaps and current fundraising efforts, and by reporting on your class’s contributions. Serving as a Class Agent is one of the most important ways in which a graduate can serve Millsaps College.

5

Class Agents will: • Communicate a clear, consistent message about Millsaps to the community. • Assist with keeping alumni records up to date by contacting lost alumni. • Encourage alumni to stay connected to Millsaps by attending reunions and alumni activities in your local area. • Serve as reunion committee volunteers to plan class reunions.

Examples of what we will provide to our class agents: • Updated information about what is going on at Millsaps College • Stationery or printed letters to be signed • Scripts and calling lists • Reunion planning handbook

The Office of Alumni Relations

The Office of Alumni Relations acts as a liaison between Millsaps College and its alumni, the Alumni Association Board, and Millsaps Alumni Chapters. We connect with alumni, parents and friends by hosting reunions, Homecoming, and regional alumni receptions.

The Alumni Association is open and free to all alumni and is comprised of chapters in cities across the country. Each of the chapters, and the association as a whole, focuses on encouraging support for Millsaps and building connections among alumni.

Your participation, as a Class Agent, supports the work of the Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association by strengthening our alumni community.

10

Millsaps Annual Fund

The Annual Fund provides Millsaps with financial resources that narrow the gap between actual operating costs and what students pay in tuition. By supporting programs and services inside and outside the classroom, gifts to the Annual Fund help maintain the excellence for which Millsaps is known.

The College relies on the Annual Fund to provide dependable and vital revenue for operating expenses and other resources that directly affect the quality of teaching and student life at Millsaps. Also, by making a gift and boosting the alumni giving percentage, you increase Millsaps' chances of receiving major grants from foundations that consider this percentage important when deciding which schools to support.

Key points about gifts to Millsaps in FY 2010-11:

• Total amount raised for the annual fund: $1,504,359, up from $960,855 last year • 33% of solicited alumni made a gift to Millsaps, up from 20% • Over 500 donors at the Presidents' Society level ($1,000 or more) • Total giving to Millsaps for the year: $7,281,902, up 28% from $5,247,009 last year

For the 2011-2012 fiscal year, we are again striving to reach $1.5 million and 44% participation in alumni support.

Matching Gifts Gifts to Millsaps can be worth double than their face value or more if the donor’s employer has a matching gift program. Matching gift programs vary slightly from company to company, but typically this is how they work: The employee fills out the brief form provided by the matching gift company and encloses it when the gift to the college is made. Millsaps College Institutional Advancement Office verifies receipt of the gift and returns the form to the company. The company then makes a contribution of a similar amount, sometimes more than doubling the original gift!
